DEMOCRACY AT YORKVILLE There is a school pledged to serve Democracy, Its name is Yorkville—its students are we. We study and work through the livelong day. Learning of peoples quite far away. Here are the Red Cross kits which we filled for brave folk. In the world still bowed low under a yoke. Pencils, pads, and crayons; even toys we bring. To encourage them so once more they too can sing. In many hospitals we serve the while. With nursing students ministering to all with a smile. Our teachers show us Democracy by their very lives. Towards truth and understanding each of them strives. Now let us plan for a united brotherly host. That firm peace and freedom may soon be our boast. Our neighbors we’ve studied in classes for days. Their products, their peoples, their customs, and ways. So hope for long peace in which each nation would Serve not its own, but the general good. Each girl in each class has set down what she learned, Each paper we scanned, and the best we discerned. This book is our essay in cooperation, A perfect example of true integration. BARBARA JONES

TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF JUNE 1957: Your graduation is an achievement of which you may be justly proud. Let me congratulate you on your achievement. Your certificate of graduation will certify that you have completed your course of study “with a satisfactory record in scholarship, behavior and citizenship. We are not all endowed with the ability to be outstanding scholastically. But all of you have been well served in school if you have learned well, as we feel confident you have, the all important values of good behavior and good citizenship, to choose the morally good in every instance, to uphold your own dignity at all costs, to respect the dignity of all others, to be responsible citizens and to contribute your full share to making your home and community better places in which to live. Our good wishes go with you for your future success. May you come as close as possible to realizing all the fond dreams you may entertain for health, happiness and achievement beyond the school. Sincerely yours, THOMAS J. SHERIDAN, Principal 3

PROPHECY We are free forever from teacher and rule. We are free at last from the fetters of school. What path shall we tread on life’s stony way? And whither shall we go, we dreamers of today? Blanca, the dancer, dreams of dazzling footlights. She’ll Cha-Cha to applause into the night. While Shirley’ll tend to patients and such, She’ll be a nurse and accomplish much. Now Raquel will work in the hairdressing line. She'll spruce up her customers until they look fine. There's Annie with a flair in the dressmaking line. For styles and gowns she’ll always have time. Don’t forget Mary, star of the Commercial class. So much of her time in an office she’ll pass. But Mildred will work towards woman’s true goal To shape into beauty her little babe’s soul.
