flu Subject - - - Webster's Dictionary defines a teacher as One who teaches, or instructs. But to any student who has known a real teacher, this definition seems somehow limited and incomplete. For instruction means more than lesson plans and term papers, teaching includes something more than workbook assignments and report cards. True teaching requires a giving of one's self, and flexibility of thought, and a rapport of spirit with the youth who will be taught. Those students who have been lucky enough to be in Mr. Dan Thornburg's history classes have seen these qualities in action. Believing that history is not just a dry-as-dust subiect, but rather an exciting glimpse into the study of changing man, Dan Thornburg treats his subject matter with a love and respect that is conta- gious. History, in Mr. T's hands, suddenly becomes vivid, alive, and meaningful. But it is not in the classroom alone that a real teacher teaches. Such a one is a teacher wherever he goes and YHS students have seen the same qualities which make Dan Thornburg's classes effective, effective when he employs them as coach, both in baseball and basketball. For his subiect matter is humanity and his teaching materials are his patience, perseverance, and genuine affection for youth. Therefore, to many students at YHS, the definition of a teacher is Dan Thornburg. And it is to him that we, the Senior Class, proudly dedicate this, the T964 Episode. 8
