These years are few and priceless. These days are full with new, unique, and wondrous emo- tions. Yorktown School is youth. It is a mixture of daily duties, achieve- ments, failures, and long awaited events. Seeing these facets of life unfold through our pages, one can better realize the importance of the wonderful yet complex world of youth. With heart and soul . . . flu Subject - - - Webster's Dictionary defines a teacher as One who teaches, or instructs. But to any student who has known a real teacher, this definition seems somehow limited and incomplete. For instruction means more than lesson plans and term papers, teaching includes something more than workbook assignments and report cards. True teaching requires a giving of one's self, and flexibility of thought, and a rapport of spirit with the youth who will be taught. Those students who have been lucky enough to be in Mr. Dan Thornburg's history classes have seen these qualities in action. Believing that history is not just a dry-as-dust subiect, but rather an exciting glimpse into the study of changing man, Dan Thornburg treats his subject matter with a love and respect that is conta- gious. History, in Mr. T's hands, suddenly becomes vivid, alive, and meaningful. But it is not in the classroom alone that a real teacher teaches. Such a one is a teacher wherever he goes and YHS students have seen the same qualities which make Dan Thornburg's classes effective, effective when he employs them as coach, both in baseball and basketball. For his subiect matter is humanity and his teaching materials are his patience, perseverance, and genuine affection for youth. Therefore, to many students at YHS, the definition of a teacher is Dan Thornburg. And it is to him that we, the Senior Class, proudly dedicate this, the T964 Episode. 8 H ' Mr. T. manages coffee break during busy schedule. X His sfudenfs know Mr. Thornburg finds Time for friendship and fun. Our principal, Mr. Ralph Heath, has done his part in bringing our school system to its height of achievement. Twelve years ago, in 1951, Mr. Heath accepted this challenging iob at YHS. Talking with a Senior class member, he commented, l have grown up with the present graduating class ot '64. Mr. Heath's genuine interest in and knowledge of youth has re- warded him with admiration and respect as well as contributing to the faculty-student relationship. For nine years, they have carried out their tasks of selling school supplies, doing bookkeeping and secretarial work for Mr. Heath, and aiding young students. Through the office windows, their patience and warm smiles have made many lasting friends. When trouble arises at Y-town there is Mr. Kent Trempala holding the position of Dean of Boys. Along with counseling he accepts the responsibility of checking daily attendance. The great iob of counseling the entire social and academic fields at Yorktown is fulfilled by Mrs. Ellen Povalac, Guidance Counselor. Making important decisions which will inevitably affect Yorktown now and in years to come is the task of our Trustee Mr. R. Eugene Swindell and his Advisory Board, Mrs. Harriet Simonson, Mr. George Stephenson, and Mr. Norman Clore. Mr. McConnaughey KR? architect for school building expan- sion, goes over cletails with Trustee Mr, Eugene Swindell and Advisory Board members, CL. to RJ Mr. Norman Clore, Mr. George Stephenson, and Mrs. Harriet Simonson. The Social Studies and English departments are experimenting with this idea in order to provide more dynamic teaching methods in a crowded school situation. The team teachers are putting forth a great deal of effort in preparing lecture hall topics. Although conditions under which this type of program takes place are not always perfect, the work involved shows the interest the teachers at YHS have for its youth. We The American Scene , Yorktown High School's Spring Rhythm's production of April 26, 1963, displayed eager young actors and actresses. Produced and directed by Mrs. .lo Strickler, Mrs. Rachel Harris, and Mr. Paul McDaniel, the performance highlighted scenes from the Jackie Gleason show and the Broadway production of Camelot and the Sound of Music. Wanda Conyers sings Do Re Mi from scene of Broadway production 'The Sound of Music'. Spring Rhythms performers make final appearance concluding another fine musical program. M o o o o 0 Where hearts were high, and fortunes low, and onions in the stew, ---- this is a quote from the Betty McDonald play, Onions in the Stew presented by the Juniors, Class of '64, March 29, 1963. The play is a comedy, portraying the real and hilarious predicaments of a family and their new life and home on an island. Directed by Mrs. Barbara Franks, we were happily surprised with the success of our first and last play at YHS. Summer months come bringing the baseball games. Enthusiasm runs high as the bat cracks, send- ing three players past home plate. As top fielder retrieves fly ball, team looks on in proud pleasure. As fall days roll in, baseball is replaced by Cross Country, another representation of our school. The gun goes off and the two mile race is on, each of the seven runners facing an individual challenge vital to the team's success. Requiring guts, two miles is no easy task, but these boys running this distance for YHS deserve greater recognition than is often received. Then the gym fills with anxious fans: the initial tip is tossed up, and once again begins a season of Hoosier Hysteria. Time out is called: scores are tied, and in the last few minutes a game is won. With the warmth of spring, track meets make their debut, Setting new records in pole-vaulting, the speed of a 50 yard dash, and the distance of a broad iump are only a few events in competition. Putting forth full effort each boy is giving to YHS a bit of his own abilityg with each sport a hope and young dream is fulfilled. 5,, f ,xx , A. , , xx f ' Y ,X If I ,fI I I- I 52 ' fi 1 N A ..., nf' I f 5? Youth continues to step forward into the massive world of opportunity. K g Each year presents life in a new perspective. To the young seventh graders the years ahead are countless, youth seems boring, but the beginning of the days in YHS are foreseen with an interpretation of drama, romance, and great significance. More realistically the eighth graders and Freshman meet each day. For high school is no longer that place for the big wheels, but the home of friends, the foundation for achievement, the institution of discipline, and the stairway to knowledge. And in the midst of the wonderful world of youth, with each moment unforgettable, every experience valuable, and days suddenly and quickly becoming only memories, the Sophomores and Juniors live the last years to the fullest ex- lerii. Throughout the years there are numerous fii'sts and a never-ending of last times. Our exuberant energy surpasses all we have encountered in the past. And now as time moves on those probierns seem trivial and the excitement of tomorrow lies ahead. 1 -i gs . .3 K1 MQQ Ji' K :fi in M ff J 3, Terry Abrams J is J ff' Linda Bright Saw ,JW Barbara Davis 1, ,.... ii . Bursts ing with pride, reminiscing with friends, and auto- graphing this favorite book, we often overlook those who made this possible. Too often we olon't realize the greotexpense of an annual, and without the financial help of our advertisers the book would go unpublished, lt is because of their interest in our school, in our youth, that they advertise in our yearbook. For they know that this is not always true advertising, How often we close the book when we reach this section. Yet we who have worked to put out the EPlSODE know that this is more than iust advertising ---N this is friendship, friendship to Yorktown High School and its many youth. l Qs YORKTOWN STANDARD SERVICE YORKTOWN GRAIN STATION CORPO RATION SK 9-773D 1 d 0 ' Yorktown, Indnono HI d I YORKTOWN STATE BANK Smith St. BONNET DRUG Yorktown Complete Prescription Service ,L,,., , Z'i 5 5 55325 if RALPTHSFMARKET 2 Z 2 RINKERS JEWELRY st VARIETY RAl.PH'S MARKET Phone SKyline 9-7743 Yorktown Indiana 116 Smith Street Yorktown, Ind.
