The quiet rooms sound of pens scratching across paperg the still halls reverberate with an occasional footstep. Students in the study hall can listen to the teacher next door lectur- e c as ing her class on the fall of the Roman Empire, of the differ- ence between an adjective and adverb, or about two times two being four. A bell rings and un- ceasing chatter resounds through the halls. Locks click and lockers bang. Another bell rings and all is quiet except for an occasional footfall in the hall. In our community of sounds we have three types of occupants. First, is the ordinary citi- zen, the student. At 3:09 a final bell rings. Students pour out of the bulding. They rush to get a seat on the bus. Or maybe they're in a hurry to get home because some added excitement awaits them there. um46ecufawa6 After the students leave, a stillness de- scends upon the structure that is so full of life during the day. Occasionally this spooky still- ness of night is broken by the voices of the young cheering a team or encouraging a frightened play cast. All these people and sounds go together to make our school a happy place to live. To the English student the Spanish class is a room of indistinguishable chatter that is under- standable only to the beginning Spanish students. After learning Spanish, girls have an oppor- tunity to learn the art of cooking. In the home- malcing rooms sounds of frying foods and of hum- ming sewing machines dominate the world of noises. Ten or twelve ambitious Yorktown boys, a cage-minded coach, Mr. Earl Snider, and many hours of practice go into making our bas- ketball team. When the fans see a thirty-two minute basketball game, they're witnessing a very small percentage of the time spent on the hardwood by the coach and players. Long hours of toil and sweat go into shap- ing a club, who through skill and team effort hope to bring glory to their school. Sometimes it is difficult for a coach to sel- ect five boys whom he thinks will get the job done successfully. He uses his own judgment, but he knows that if a link breaks in the chain he has five more capable boys who can strength- en it again. Forward Laury Cross, 22, shoots over the arms of Center netters. Many times freshmen and second team players are left unnoticed because people want only to see the first team play. However, they are always under the watchful eye of Coach Snider who will give them a chance to play on the var- sity team when he feels they are ready. After a few weeks of training and conditioning the boys in grades nine to twelve take the field. This is the time when they see if the bent leg slides and drag hunts pay off. Al Hensley strikes a familiar stance as he waits for the pitch. The future big league glovemen play both summer and fall season games. All this leads up to an elimination tourney that will decide the county winner. The East and West leagues have a play-off series and the respec- tive winners meet on a neutral diamond for the championship game. Perhaps the roughest sport where endur- ance and conditi-oning is concerned, the thinlies begin early to strengthen flabby muscles and develop their breathing capac- ity Not all boys can sprint or run the distance races, so they have the opportunity to try their skill at the field events.
