For many years, you have suffered the pain of repair and remodeling, always hoping that the facelifting process would hide the fact that you were no longer adequate. Each year, you sought desparately to conceal the truth from prying eyes-and yet, secretly you knew, you could no longer face the onslaught of pupils that each term advanced upon you in ever increasing numbers! Relentlessly, they surged up and down your aisles, they pushed and iostled in the halls, until, at last you admitted to any and all who were willing to listen, l'm through,--l'm too old, -I must yield to someone younger and stronger than l. Then, there came an overwhelming feeling of relief. You had given the responsibility to the community and now it was up to the people of Mt. Pleasant Township to sponsor your successor. Yes, Old Building, you are being replaced. The students of Yorktown are looking forward to a wonderful future in a new, up-to-date building. But, in the hearts of the people of this com- munity, you, who have housed our hopes and dreams, and am- bitions, will always be remembered and loved. Mr. Ray l.. Miller Trustee, 1951-1954 ADVISORY BOARD Mr. Warner Dickerson, Mr. Ray Miller, Mr. Rex Mahoney, and Mr. Herbert Fuson. Several years ago Mr. Ray Miller envisioned a beautiful new school to be situated on a rolling hillside east of our town. Our community was beginning to see the results of the building boom brought about by World War ll. Already, our school facilities were becoming more and more limited, our teachers were required to work under severe handicaps. Mr. Miller thought of the chil- dren from these homes who would make up the future student body of Yorktown School and knew that prompt action must be taken. He saw the need for a Sinking Fund, whereby additional tax money would be accumulated until the time of construction of the new school plant. Mr. Miller consulted with Mr. Gene Ham- ilton, Muncie architect, and a modernistic, streamlined new build- ing was sketched and blueprinted. At last, the dream was be- coming a reality! At this writing the building is well under way. The community is anxiously awaiting the time of completion, and although we Seniors will always have a place in our hearts for old Yorktown High, we, too, are looking forward to Oper- ation, Moving Day. N Mr. Hubert lBobl Parkinson Trustee, 1955-1959 lf Q1 iff I v so 'K Q56 we if r ,aw uw N, Sk N. Qt x N as . ff in Q 0 4 9 Mr. Ralph Heath, Principal A.B. and M.A.-l.U. and Ball State To the Seniors: You have come to the end of your formal public school education. But in truth you are iust beginning to venture into life's many experiences. The outcome of these experiences, whether it be good or bad, will be greatly determined by what you have learned in school. ln spite of the many interesting and not infrequent excursions upon fascinating by-paths, you have really learned a lot. Looking back you will be inclined to believe that the most important thing you learned was to appraise and evaluate your ignorance. You came to school with the firm conviction that the world was your oyster, and it took you the better part of four years to find out that no oyster is of much value unless and until you master the art of opening it. It is hoped that most of you have emerged from school with something of the spirit of humility. You are iust beginning to know what you didn't know. That, on the whole, is a rather healthy state of mind for young people going out into the workaday world. Remember too that there is no short cut to learning and efficiency. Learning should be as long as life itself. It took God one hundred years to make the sturdy oak but just two months to make a squash. Ralph Heath Principal 1955 Served on I.H.S.A.A. He is the center and the best rebounder in the history of the school. DICK MORRISON, one of Yorktown's better guards for l955, was given an assignment to stop some of the 'toughies. ' Dick could enter a game and put enough spark into his team mates to get a victory. BOB REYNOLDS, not a flash all the time but a ball player any coach is happy to have, is the spark plug of any team and one who trains to the letter. Bob, although scoring many points himself, is responsible for better than half the assists to the other players. FRED HAISLEY, a senior who started slow this year but came into his own when he helped put the finishing touches to Eaton in the County Tourney and to a strong Middletown team, could play center or forward very well. JIM MITCHELL, a clever little guard whose iump shot and defensive ability won many games, displayed a shooting ability in the County Tourney against Cowan that is matched by none. WWW Aimee MAX HENSLEY, a guard as well as an under basket man, was very good in the clutch. Max hit many outside bas- kets that spelled defeat for many teams. JAY CHILDS, although not seeing action too much, was a great team boy. It has been said many times that a team is no stronger than its weakest man. The 21-6 record speaks for itself, especially, since the team line-up did undergo several changes during the year. This year's team possessed the following good qualities which make good basketball teams, shooting ability, speed, competitiveness, defensive ability, height, and teamwork-to mention only a few. lt was a pleasure to have worked with such a fine group of young men, who l found both willing and able to prove that they were, without a doubt, a very good team. Hampered by a lack of height the team made up for this lack by good team spirit, cooperation, enthusiasm, and the will to win. Playing a full, tough schedule, the team has a fine season's record which predicts well for our varsity as these boys move up and gives future Freshman teams at Yorktown a record to shoot at. low 1, left to right: Terry Ellis, Bobby Morrow, Tom Wlllimson, Bobby Burton, Clayton Noel.
