James McVi.:ker On December 6, 1939, the Juniors of Yorktown High School presented the play M'Liss. The play was a success in every way. Those attending were greatly pleased by such splendid acting of the characters. Lelah Slatton, as M'Liss went to the hearts of the people. From the be- ginning of the play when Mrs. Moffits, landlady of the Roarin' Dog Hotel, and Yuba Bill, the comical cowboy, appeared on the stage, the audience was greatly interested in the events that followed. Bummer Smith, the father of M'Liss, was the victim of murder be- cause of his newly inherited fortune from his brother and also or a mine in the mining town of Smith's Pocket, where the story takes place. Carter Lang- don and Clara Hunting were the two schemers from the city. Clara posed as Mrs. Smith, Bummer's long lost wife. Carter was supposed to be there on a vacation for his health. They planned to have Bummer killed and then get rid of M'Liss so that Clara would inherit Bummer's fortune. john Grey, a young school teacher who is in love with M'Liss, does not trust the two schemers and therefore tries to help M'Liss but is accused of the murder himself. Clytie Moffits is also fond of John which causes a great strife between her and M'Liss. Also one of the characters never to be forgotten was the young actress Bess Starlight, who tried very hard and somewhat successfully to get all the attentions of Yuba Bill and Carter. In the last act judge McSnaggley held a very exciting session of court. M'Liss did not believe John murdered her father and she wanted him cleared of the charge so she proved him innocent and showed their motive for wanting her fatherkilled. As the case ended, John declared his love for M'Liss, since this is too much for the tender Clytie she left the room and the curtain fell on an excellent play.
