He entered the Naval service asa Seaman apprentice in January 1927. After serving for two and a half years as an enlisted man, during which time he attained the rate of Fireman 3fc, he entered the U. S. Naval Academy, and upon graduation in June 1933 was commissioned Ensign in the United States Navy. After graduation, Ensign Cobb was assigned to the USS COLQRADO where he served in the Gunnery, Engineering and Communication Departments. In February 1936, he was ordered to the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, for flight training and was designated Naval Aviator in March 1937. During'World War II, he served in Patrol Squadrons SIX and ELEVEN and participated in thet battlefof Midway and subsequent operations in the Central and South Pacific. Here his squadronareceived the Presidential Unit Citation, and he, the Distinguished Flying Cross. This was followed by a year as Commanding Qfficer of Patrol Squadron NINETY-UNE, with operations in the 'Solomon Islands Campaign, mostly in Black Cat night attack opera- tions, for which his squadron was awarded the Navy Unit Citation. , Captain Cobb served as Commanding Officer of the USS YORKTOWN from September 1957 until August of 1953. Upon completion of this duty he returned to the Pentagon as Deputy Secretary to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In April 19,61 he reported as Chief of Staff and Aide to Commander Carrier Division FIVE. Rear Admiral Cobb relieved Rear Admiral W. A. Stuart as Commander Carrier Division NINETEEN on 5 August 1961 in Pearl Harbor. I W P-wavwmw Z P-4 Q Captain M. M. Gantar Captain Mark M. GANTAR was horn in North Chicago, Illinois and graduated from Northwestern University in 1940. While at Northwestern he completed four years of NROTC and was commissioned an Ensign in the Naval Reserve. During World War H he served on three destroyers seeing duty and action in the A- leutians, the Atlantic, and the Western Pacific. After the war he completed an ordnance post graduate caurse at the U.S. Naval Academy. During the Korean War he was the Gunnery Officer of the USS TOLEDO. He has com- manded the destroyer escort USS ROBERT E. PEARY and the destroyer USS HOPEWELL. He served as Gunnery Officer on the staff of Commander Cruiser Destroyer Force Pacific Fleet and as Ordnance Superintendent at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Following a tour as Commander of Destroyer Division TWO EIETY THREE, Captain Gantar reported as Chief of Staff to Commander Carrier Division NINETEEN. Smith was born in Dike, Texas in 1919. He attended the East Texas State Teachers College. He completed flight training in February of 1942 and was then assigned duty in Squadron VGS-12, an escort fighter group. Following a tour in Alaska at Dutch Harbor, he proceeded to the Southwest Pacific for action at Guadalcanal. Commander Smith returned to the States in 1943 and became a member of VF-13, which deployed to the Pacific on the USS FRANKLIN. He later returned to the Training Command at Pensacola, Florida to serve as Officer-in-Charge of the Basis Instruction School. After three years at Pensacola he was ordered for duty as the Executive Officer of VF-81 at Norfolk, Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida. In 1950 he attended General Line School in Monterey, California and upon completion was assigned to the Operational Intelligence Section of the Office of Naval Intelligence. Following two years in this duty he became a member of Commander, U.S. Naval Air Force, Pacific Fleet, Staff as Intelligence Officer. After jet transition training in Olathe, Kansas, he becaae Commanding Officer of VF-114 and completed a WestPac tour aboard the USS ESSEX in 1 7. He was then ordered to the Naval War College at Newport, Rhode Island, as a student in the Naval Warfare Course. Upon completion of one year as a student, he was assigned to the Staff of the Naval War College as Head of the Academic Team in the Command and Staff. Course. He was then assigned to USS YORKTOWN QCVS-10D as Operations Officer in August 1960, and became Executive Officer in June of 1961. Among his medals are the Distinguished Flying Cross, 5-Air medals, American Defense, American Theater, Asiatic-Pacific Medal, with 9 battle stars, World War II Victory, Occupation Medal,-Philippine Defense Medal, Philippine Liberation, and the National Defense Medal. Gibson THE YORKTOWN's ROLE IN ANTI-SUBMARINE WARFARE ' The aircraft carrier is the key member of the Anti-Submarine Warfare KASWJ Hunter-Killer team. It is the command post of Hunter-Killer Which includes: the carrier, With Commander Carrier Division 19 embarked as the Task Group Commander, four to eight destroyers, with a Destroyers Division Commander embarked as Screen Commander g and Carrier Anti-Submarine Air Group 55 consisting of tvvo SZF Q' Tracker 7' squadrons, one helicopter squadron and a detachment of three airborne early Warning radar equipped AD Skyraiders, based aboard the carrier. The YGRKTOWN is a high-speed mobile base that can move from one troubled sea lane to another as needed and on very short notice. It serves as the logistics center for the units of the ASW team and as a command post from Which operations of the Hunter-Killer team are coordinated and controlled by the Task Group Commander. To permit timely, effective and efficient employment of the elements of the Task Group, the YGRKTOWN provides a Wide variety of surface and air search radars, high speed corn- munications equipment, electronic countermeasures devices, and electronic navigational equipment. This equipment provides a rapid continuous flow of vital. tactical information to the Combat Information Center and Flag Plot of the carrier, information Which the Task Group Commander must have in order to effectively carry out the ASW Team's mission, Hunt and Kill enemy submarines. . Air Intelligence personnel maintain files on all intelligence publications and prepare briefing informa- tion for the Air Group pilots. ln conjunc- tion With spuadron intelligence personnel they brief pilots and crews prior to flight missions. Yeomen assigned to the Opera- tions Office maintain a library of all opera- tion plans and orders held by YORKTOWN and prepare and distribute the ship's Ope- rating Schedule and Air Plan. Under the super- vision of the Aircraft Handling and Flight Deck Officers they move and position all aircraft on the fiight on the flight deck. Working in the Wide open space of the fiight deck their job is to tovv, push, tie dovvn, chock up and control all aircraft in positioning them for launch and recovery. Divid- ed essentially into two groups they main- tain and operate the ship's hydraulic cata- pult and arresting gear equipment. Their job is to hook the aircraft to the catapult and launch it. Then from the after end of the flight deck they operate the arrest- ing engines and wires which catch and stop the aircraft in a short distance. Via elevators they feed the up aircraft to the flight deck for launch and receive the ones needing maintenance. Tn trying to keep as many aircraft as possible out of the Wind and Weather for maintenance, their job is to pack the aircraft like sardines in the limited space of the hangar deck. To do this the men are assigned jobs as plane directors, plane handlers, elevator operators and phone talkers. Cox, IH V-6 Division, also called the Aircraft Ma- intenance Division, primary function is ope- ration and upkeep of aeronautical shipboard shops, facilities and test equipment requi- red for maintenance and repair of embarked aircraft and their equipment. These shops are the aviation metal shop, aviation electri- cal shop, two aviation electronics shops, en- gine build up and the parachute loft. V-6 maintains all aviation ground support equip- ment, including fork lifts, the aircraft crash crane, tow tractors, starter jeeps etc. The division also has a five man crew which maintains the shipis TF-1 aircraft, whether it's operating from YORKTOWN of some nearby air station. Wlien the ship is at fl- ight quarters, V-6 provides starter jeep dri- vers, V-6 personnel also perform routine ma- intenance on all automobiles which are per- manently assigned to the ship when home ported in Long Beach. Finally, V-6 keeps fiscal and material records for the Air Depart- ment. The radiomen receive and transmit messa- ges of all kinds from each department aboard and relay many messages for the ships in company. ,Radiomen operate and maintain many kinds ol equipment, from a vvire brush to complex radio receivers and transmitters.
