' 'Vat-V if . 11' -'f'--4--,i.,..-,?'f'f1' :eff-, - . ---... , -- nginccring The primary goal of the Engineering Department is to operate and maintain the ships motovation gear, eight boilers and four main engines capable of producing 150,000 horsepower and provid- ing sufficient wind across the bow for air operations. Keeping the ship afloat and on an even keel during normal steaming and in battle is the Damage Control function of the department. Effective damage control is 905 prepartion, requiring unrelenting effort on the part of all hands in maintaining equipment in top operating condition. V 0 The shipis service generators provide enough electrical power for a small town. Up to 92,000 gallons of water are distilled each day to satisfy the thirsty boilers and crew. Refrige- ration' equipment with a capacity to produce 400 tons of ice per day .keeps provisions at proper' temperatures, air-conditions various spaces, and cools the water in scuttlebutts. Two hundred and seventy. ventilation and heating systems keep the ship cool in the hottest 'climates and warm in the coldest.
