Commander Chester W. Heck, U.S.N. Gunnery Officer The Gunnery Department protects the Yorktown from air attack. Powerful five inch guns are automatically aimed and fired as radar equipped director tracks target. Gunnery Department is merely a title that does not begin to cover the manifold duties of this group. One of the most diverse of the LADY'S units, the various chores performed are generally those of seamanship. The deck divisions handle these functions, refueling, cargo handling, cleaning and maintaining the ships hull as Well as manning the ship's gun batteries. Liberty and utility boats are serviced and manned by the deck divisions also. Fire control and maintenance of the gun batteries are also major duties. The Marine Detachment, the 7th division, has over seventy leathernecks to pre- serve the ship's security, and form the nucleus of the ships landing party.
