An appropriate name in view of the squadrons mission which is that of keeping vigil for the ships below during periods of reduced visibility. Formed at the U.S. Naval Air Station, Alameda in August 1948, the squadron Hew the FSF Bearcat until the summer of 1950. After reforming, the squad- ron departed for its initial Korean cruise aboard the U.S.S. Princeton, and flew the F4U Corsair. During that cruise, VF-193 provided close air support for the U.N. Forces engaged in the Hungmon evacuation, and the attacks of Hwochan Reservoir. In 1952, VF-193 again deployed aboard the Princeton for its second Korean tour. The Korean Presidential Citation was awarded the squadron for its performance in the ensuing action. The Banshee assumed the role of squadron aircraft during the winter of 1952-53, and eventually the squadron came under the command of Commander J.R. Rees, a veteran Pax River test pilot.
