C. High School Athletic Confer- ence ' s State Track and Field Me et and, as expected by local fans, emerged victoriously. With disappointing per- formances by teammates in the 880 yd. run and one mile run, the Wapitis had to fight desperately to overcome their point deficiency that came about as the result of the fine performances by the defending champions, Hillside High School of Durham, and Ligon High School of Raleigh. The last event of the meet, the one mile relay, was the deter ming factor in the ultimate victory for the Wap- itis. It was during this race that Harding Kirkley, later voted, unanimously, the Most Outstanding Track Athlete, brought the fans to their feet as he came from thirty yards behind to catch and pass the forerunner from Hillside, and cross the tape first. This performance gave York Road first place honors and five much needed points to the Wapitis” for a slim 38 1 2 to 38 victory over runner- up Ligon High School of Raleigh. A note of interest to those loyal Wapiti” fans who are concerned with the growth of York Road ' s athletic pro- gram . . . This is the first time in twelve years that the State Track and Field Championship has gone to a school other than Hillside High School of Durham, North Carolina. Hats off to York Road. Keep up the good work. Excel- lence belongs to the Wapitis. Mr. Calvin Wallace is the coach for the optimistic 1965 track team.
