For you, our readers, we, the Class of ' 65, have endeavored to capture a phase of that decade and to portray vivid moments of our sojourn in Wapitiland. The challenge of academics, the joy in competition and associ- ation, the emergence of personal and social values are all preserved in this storehouse of memories. Our achievements are recorded here for posterity. Our deepest appreciation is extended to our advisers for their unceas- ing work and advice, to our principals and faculty for their guidance and instruction, to our parents for their inimitable faith, to our supporters for their contributions, and to all for unselfish and patient understanding. It is our sincere hope that this edition of THE WAPITI will serve as a constant and happy reminder of all of these entities as we pictorially pre- sent Traveling through Wapitiland, 1965. You are now within the portals of York Road High School, af- fectionately called Wapitiland. As you proceed on your journey, you see structures wherein our students are prepared physically, mentally, and socially to cope with the struggles and strifes of everyday life. York Road is also a proving ground for some of the finest athletes in the world. When our athletes are victorious in battle, a hearty clinging and clanging is heard throughout Wapitiland . . . the Victory Bell. Our victory bell is a dominant feature of our student center. Located in the southern part of our campus is our vocational building which houses our music department, art, home economics, and industrial arts departments. 6 These seniors engage in a typical Wapiti folk- moot before scampering off to class. Many lasting friendships are made here ir this favorite gathering spot. At last, a chance to relax, to chitchat and find out just what is happening. This is our Mr. Lea, caught unaware during a busy moment. There ' s nothing like conversing with old friends between classes! As you travel herein, an inquisitive glance gives you a tiny wisp of campus life. A superbly trained group of teachers and advisers guide the students on their merry way through Wapiti- land. We Wapitis are very human. Just as everyone else, we strive vigorously for excellence in every endeavor and relax just as diligently. 7 The development of our student body is constant and diverse. Within the realms of Wapitilandare facilities for each type of development; consequently, the progressive strides are noticeable on and off campus. We enjoy the challenge of the unknown. The experiments we do today may prove to be the gateway for future scientists and a better world tomor- row. We Wapitis would rather fight than NOT eat ! ! 8 We include in our acquisition of know- ledge atime for reflecting and for sharing, atime for developing one ' s creativity, and a time for appreciating that which tends to make life beautiful. Christmas--A beautiful Christmas scene and inspiring melodious music do their part to imbue us with the true spirit of the season. Thanksgiving--A time for us to count our blessings and then to Falling into fashion means so much when we ' ve actually help- share with others. ed the fashions become realities. We learn early to appreciate beauty. We take pride in our princess on parade. 9 To you, Mrs. Mary Harper, we dedicate our yearbook. Your posi- tion on the faculty has been an immense credit to York Road High School. Your guidance through the years has contributed greatly toward our emotional and educational development. Each student of the Class of ' 65 owes to you much gratitude. Because of these specified qualities and many others, we dedicate to you, Mrs. Harper, the 1965 edition of THE WAPITI. m mmimm Mr. Gerson L. Stroud PRINCIPAL Uhe J j rincipafs JlCessaye This must, indeed, be a pleasant time for those of you who are now grad- uating from York Road High School. Your class is among the finest gradu- ating classes that I have had the plea- sure of knowing, and I am quite proud to have been associated with you. Con- gratulations to each member of the Class of 1965. You should realize, however, that these past three years were meant not to educate you, but to provide you with the means for educating yourselves, for life itself is a lengthy process of educa- tion. Take advantage of every opportuni- ty, for one of life ' s greatest lessons is the recognition of opportunity when it comes. If all of you go on to become dis- tinguished within yourselves, if each of you demand answers to questions that must be asked regardless of the conse- quences, if each of you speak up when you see injustice and man ' s inhumanity to man, and if each of you become wise enough to know true humility in your lifetime, then we who knew and taught you in your younger days can ask for no greater reward. L. Roberts, Head Coach, The progressive York Road Wapitis, after playing three years in the 2A athletic division, made their debut in the Western 4A Conference during the fall of ' 64. The Wapitis placed sixth in the conference, winning three and losing five games. These defenders of Wapitiland rolled over such teams as William Penn, Barr Street, and Torrence Lytl e, while losing to teams such as the Second Ward Tigers, ' 63 State Champions, by a score of 12-6 and the ' 64 Western 4A Champions, the Carver Yellow Jackets. These mighty Wapitis placed four players, Charlie Hop- kins, Billy Waiters, Robert Massey, and Eddie Brently, on the All- County team during their first year in 4A competi- tion. Charlie Hopkins also represented York Road in the Shrine Youth Bowl game. Although the senior Wapiti standouts will be missed, with Herman Young, Joseph Talley, Robert Massey, Alan Mc- Manus, and Eddie Brently returning, the team should be a strong contender for the championship of the ' 65 season. C. High School Athletic Confer- ence ' s State Track and Field Me et and, as expected by local fans, emerged victoriously. With disappointing per- formances by teammates in the 880 yd. run and one mile run, the Wapitis had to fight desperately to overcome their point deficiency that came about as the result of the fine performances by the defending champions, Hillside High School of Durham, and Ligon High School of Raleigh. The last event of the meet, the one mile relay, was the deter ming factor in the ultimate victory for the Wap- itis. It was during this race that Harding Kirkley, later voted, unanimously, the Most Outstanding Track Athlete, brought the fans to their feet as he came from thirty yards behind to catch and pass the forerunner from Hillside, and cross the tape first. This performance gave York Road first place honors and five much needed points to the Wapitis” for a slim 38 1 2 to 38 victory over runner- up Ligon High School of Raleigh. A note of interest to those loyal Wapiti” fans who are concerned with the growth of York Road ' s athletic pro- gram . . . This is the first time in twelve years that the State Track and Field Championship has gone to a school other than Hillside High School of Durham, North Carolina. Hats off to York Road. Keep up the good work. Excel- lence belongs to the Wapitis. Mr. Calvin Wallace is the coach for the optimistic 1965 track team. 80 Coach - Mr. Charles Smalls Looking back over an eventful jour- ney through Wapitiland, the Wapiti prepares to start anew on another journey for a different year. The 1965 journey was adventurous and momentous for the young Wapiti, who is merely a symbol representing the typical progressive student at York Road High School. §8i m $ s fv IS tmk vm fim Wu W.i ' ifl And now, we the graduating class of 1965 depart from the realms of Wapitiland to continue our travels elsewhere.
