SX Nuo xp. --Y qi JW AS WE WERE l2 YEARS AGO CLASS OF I95O In l938 the halls of Yorkville Graded School witnessed the first assembling of a group that was to pass through years of absorbing the learning of the ages. This assembly of starry- eyed yearlings began their long search for knowledge under Miss Poag and Miss Bickley. With their fathomless patience, we made our first year with little trouble and moved on to more difficult studies. The time passed quickly and soon we found ourselves passing into the fifth grade, here we received our first taste of history under the capable instruction of Miss Agnes and Miss Hill. ln the following year we were informed of the addition of the twelfth grade. When graduation came that year, we in the sixth grade graduated with the seventh grade into Junior High School. Our part in the graduation was inconspicuous. We sat in the auditorium and watched the seventh grade exer- cises and also watched them receive the medals. fWe were not eligiblel Thus we passed from Grammar School. The Seventh grade initiated us into the ways of High School and proved to us that our Gram- mar School days had not supplied us with all obtainable knowledge, this came as a complete surprise to us. The days rolled past and turned into weeks, months, and years. Included in our curricula now were such subjects as Latin, French, geometry, literature, and history, each of which proved taboo to some of our members. With our Junior year we fearfully faced the prospect of raising money for a Junior-Senior banquet. Our fears were not without basis, and we soon found ourselves selling cokes and hot dogs at football games, organizing a talent show, dances and any other mode of making the neces- sary money. Without our sponsor, Mrs. Caroline Turner, our banquet would probably never have become a reality, but with her tireless efforts we found ourselves inviting the Seniors to our ban- quet To her we are greatly indebted. When the doors of our Alma Mater were opened in the fall of l949 we walked into the building as the Senior Class of York High School. Our teachers impressed upon us the fact that we were Seniors and that we should act as such. Being duly impressed, we gathered our robes of dignity about us and walked about the building with a more reserved air. lt was not long before the preliminary work on our annual began. We sold magazines and Christmas cards. Then be- gan the actual work on the book. We had a deadline to meet. We met it. Mrs. Hart and Mrs. Plexico, our sponsors, worked zealously with the Annual staff to make this volume of the White Rose the best. We hope we have suc- ceeded. But a good Annual was not the only thing our class excelled in. The Class of l95O supplied 9 of the l l varsity football players. The Green Dragons won 8 out of lO games. Now our l2-year journey is at an end, and we come to the time when we must leave these halls and classrooms. We feel a deep affection for this building, our Alma Mater, and we feel sad- ness as we realize that we are the last Senior Class to march from it into the wide, wide world. So it is with sincere gratitude that we, the Senior Class of l95O, thank all those who have helped us along our journey, and we pause for a final farewell to our Alma Mater, York High School. Our post was organized in the fall of I947 after a York delegation attended a conference in Anderson the previous spring. In November, l948, Mary Frances Carroll and Lilly Simrill chaperoned by Mr. H. C. Johnson, rep- resented the York post at Buck Hill Falls, Pennsylvania, where the National Con- vention was held.
