The Wildcat harriers, under the guidance of caoch Phil Richard- son, completed the season undefeated. This was a first in over twenty years. Coach Richardson attributed the Wildcats' suc- cess to experience, depth and dedication. Hopefully, these will be the factors that will bring a period of York dominance. The team was led by junior Chris Goodale and senior Paul Conroy. Also consistently in the top ten were seniors Allen Works and Paul Adams, junior Brett Olsen and sophomores Scott Foster, Peter Stevens and Pierre Puffer. Rounding out the squad were junior Chris Hames and sophomore Richard Chandler. Mr. Richardson also coached the five-member girls' squad for the fourth year. Two seniors, Maria Seedner and Kelly Mclntyre, did an outstanding job while three freshmen, Patience Williams, Theresa Hurley and Meredith Seaman, provided a nucleus for next season. Maria Seedner, a cross country standout during the interscholastic season at York High, qualified for the Junior Olympics held Dec. l3th at Chennye, Wyoming. Seedner won a berth in the games at an AAU race for the Lakers Track Club. Maria, along with her team, did an outstanding job. The team placed 2nd in the Junior Olympics. The York Boys' Track Team of 1980 was one of the best ever, perhaps even better than the 1975 edition. As a team, they established 26 school records and 3 league records, as they completely dominated the league in regular season competition by defeating all 9 teams they faced. They, again, won the League Cham- pionship, for the third time in a row, running up a whopping 158 points in the process. The, depth of the team was unquestionably the key to this year's success. This depth was most obvious in the two Relay Meets that York attends annually. York placed 2nd in both the Portsmouth Clipper Relays and the Westbrook Relays. These were both best showings ever. All but 3 of the relay team records were broken this year. As usual, along with the outstanding depth, there were many fine individual performances. Scott Taylor was outstanding as he broke his own school record and established the League Record in the high jump at 6' 4 , while accumulating 133 5f6 points for the season to lead the team. Scott became only the second York boy to score more than 300 points in his track career, ranking second overall to Ned Grieg in total points. Sophomore, Chris Goodale, broke Scott Hugo's 1979 record in the 2-mile run with a time of l0:O7.9 minutes. Sophomore, Steve Bolster, proved outstand- ing with two records. He broke Tom Blanchard's 1977 record in the discus with a toss of 150' 4 and Rich Wa11ace's shot record with a put of 48' l . One ofthe most pleasant surprises ofthe 1980 sea- son was the performance of Freshman Peter Stevens. Pete broke Mike Smith's 1979 record in the 330 Yard Intermediate Hurdles with a fine time of 41 .7 seconds. Pete also scored 77M points to break the Freshman scoring record previously held by Rob Berry. Without question, however, the most electrifying performances of the year were turned in by the two relay teams. Six consecutive times thc Sprint Relay Team of Jeff LaPointe, Rich LaBonte, Fred Hinesley, and Jim Pidgeon broke the school record finishing with a League record and a best clocking of 45.6 seconds. The Mile Relay Team wasn't far behind with several records of their own and a final best of 3235.6 minutes with their own League record. This team consisted of Mike Hajosy, Gary Barr, Peter Stevens, and Rich LaBonte. ,win R , CU' 'F j w .LA X 1 fl . 1 .44 O 4 55 1 L 9 M' N , f I ,vfy .L .i xr' VII' -K J ' . GIRLS, TRAC A number of girls of York High school started tl intense training for this year's track season. After sch girls began to run and exercise vigorously. lt was obvi that the excitement and enthusiasm of these girls : holds for the 1981 Wildcat's season. Mr. Patten and his squad of girls had a successful 5 son. Last year, Maria Seedner pulled quite a load for girls' track team, winning the mile and two mile, ag setting the school record. Last year's mile relay te broke the school record with returning veterans such Kim Hinesley, and Maura Estes. These girls all excel in their running, while Sandy Glynn did a fine job in high jump, breaking the school record of 5' with a hei of 5' lVz . Lilly Leonard, a senior, is very strong in shot put and discus. An underclassman with a fine formance was .Ioy Bolster, in the discus. Another on Missy Ackerman who won SYSSA for the javelin. Chase, L. Pease During the third week in June, five Boys' State representatives were selected to attend the University of Maine at Orono Dirigo Boys' State. Here they stayed for one action- filled week to gain knowledge and to partici- pate in everything from a town meeting to the election of a governor. They became members of new towns and new political parties. The boys returned home the 20th, and the girls spent their week in much the same manner. The delegates heard from guest speakers who spoke on the importance of involvement in government, along with the many depart- ments it entails. A long-distance phone call from Washington from Senator Bill Cohen was an unexpected treat. For all nine of the delegates, it was an educational experience and one that will be remembered. Hajosy, Vice-President: F. Hincslcy, Secretary: L. Hodgin Last year, a new program was introduced to York High School by former school instructor, Mr. Michael O'Keefe. lt was the National High School Model United Nations Team. Students interested in trying out for the team had to take an exam and give speeches. The top fifteen stu- dents were chosen and represented the German Demo- cratic Republic. For four months they independently researched the assigned topics for their committees. The NHSMUN Team then traveled to New York City. They stayed in the New York Statler Hotel. It was a very good place because it is situated right in the heart of the Big Apple. The accomodations were expensive and they had to sleep in quads that were actually singles, but with fringe benefits like room service at their fingertips, it was well worth it for all l l the students. Ten of the fifteen students held major office posi- tions in their sessions. Some also held the position of Chairperson of the Eastern Bloc Countries. This was an outstanding accomplishment considering that there were only ninety office positions available throughout the entire UN and over 2,000 students nationwide competed for those positions. The proposals drafted passed in the General Assembly, and thus their goal was accomplished. The York High School team was the only one that was able to meet with U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Donald McHenry. This was a personal honor for all the students. They were able to discuss current world issues with him and received personalized autographed pictures from him. Students and advisors were also WN' .ff individually complimented by the Under-Secretary General to the UN. They were later ranked in the top five schools of those participating nationwide. Between their meetings, which usually lasted from 9:00 a.m. until l:00 a.m.. the students found time to take advantage of many of the cultural and social ben- efits of New York City. All of them watched the origi- nal casting of Chorus Line performed in New York's Shubert Theatre on Broadway tWe don't know that person!j. lt was extremely exciting! The students did more things in a week than most people could only dream of doing in a month! Their feelings toward the entire trip are best stated in four small words, WE LOVE NEW YORK!!! The interest and enthusiasm for the team this year was great. This year's advisor is Social Science teacher, Mr. Richard Paine. With the help of five returning veterans and their advisor, the newly selected team has been preparing for this year's trip. They will be representing Jamaica and also hold the Spain Security Council seat. They have a hard act to follow but we all know that they will be successful in their endeavors in the Big Apple. Mr. Paine STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council held their election for the new year early in the fall. With the incoming officers at hand, prepara- tions had begun for the ycar's activities. Plans were made for homecoming and the field day events. A spectator bus for the championship football game was also a prosperous item. Near the middle of November and early spring our annual Blood Drives were held, topping 50 pints each time. Our school store and the basketball concessions have been vital money making projects. With the money earned. we have helped toward the directory signs around the school and the sending ofa girl and boy to attend Dirigo Girls' and Boys' State. Ts? tl -Rl lst Row G. Patterson. D.
