Of Mr. Milam pauses for a moment of seriousness during honors for Mrs. Hansford. Discussions in Smoking area. Mr. Milam Coordinates A Myriad Facets Associated With A School Year Finishing his third year as the head man, Claude Milam has piloted York High with soft kid gloves (that sometimes hid a necessary fist of steel). Skippers, untidy smokers, and other denizens of disturbance have found a swift, sure hand of justice when the time arose. Those students who can do no wrong at any time, and those who were around when they shouldn’t have been could count on their reward fitting the situation. It seems that the principal’s work is never done. When he was not busy with the five percenters, there were budgets to balance, back to school nights to organize, buildings to redesign, and even a trip to Las Vegas ’’for a conference.” With all the projects in action, Mr. Milam still found time to work with church and community operations. Nevertheless, Mr. Milam is not all serious business. There were ball games to go to, concerts to attend, and most of all there were students to talk to giving a wider understanding of the ways of the world. His impression has been made on the halls of York High. Mr. and Mrs. Milam ride in style at Homecoming. 18

! ■ Assistan t Prin ci pals Fa cili ta te ■ School Programs Mr. Beachum Student instruction and guidance is probably one of the most difficult jobs in school. Add the disadvantage of taking over the job in the middle of November and you have Mr. Beachum. Balancing student loads, co-ordinating schedules, and insuring the fluidity of academic projects has given our new administrator a huge basket case of problems that occasionally seem to be solved by a magic educational wand. Our thanks to Mr. Beachum as part of a very dedicated staff who work long untold hours to find a satisfactory resolve for the student in need of a path to travel. Discipline, that hated word, is the realm of Mr. Page. Known as the staff member who keeps his cool, Mr. Page is the man designated to keep the noses straight and the students’ paths true. This job demands a close relationship with the students and an ability to understand the problems that sometimes cause problems in the everyday life we know as school. Athletics is another area covered by Mr. Page. He helps keep the various programs lined up from the logistics standpoint. It’s easy to hop in your car and go to the game. The game runs smoothly because someone has organized the tickets, the patrols, and a bunch of other jobs that make everything seem so smooth. 19
