What am I? Where am I going? What is my pur- pose in life? Where will I find the answers? 5 i We break our falls, pick up our thoughts, and move on — through the unknown — developing and experiencing the lessons of life. .! i ' Our walk saw pride and enthusiasm coming from all corners during Homecoming ' 73. A spirit week kicked off the festivities which included a “Faculty Fifties day, a spirit dinner, pep ral- lies, and the first parade in York’s history. 9 i 10 1 1 T Amid the confusion of napkins, wires, point, and missing bodies, spon- sors were surprised to see the forms of floats emerge. Casual encounters with students enable him to recognize faces if not names. With an occasional nod or smile for passing teachers and students, Mr. Milam makes his way through crowds to begin a busy day. His goal is to help students start on their own paths. Perhaps that is what makes his job gratifying; to see students end a part of their lives at York and continue them elsewhere. And each year Mr. Milam meets the challenge of sending another class on its way. 20 Assistant Principals Lend a Helping Hand The offices of assistant principals under- went quite a change this year. Mr. Perkins and Dr. Corley joined Mr. Page in adminis- tering aid to students. Dr. Corley was asso- ciate principal in charge of student instruc- tion and guidance. He was very dedicated to quality education and student interest. Mr. Perkins had the frustrating job of coor- dinating student activities. The nickname, “Perky, projects the attitude he felt toward his work. Discipline was main- tained by Mr. Page. His firm manner made a great impression on everyone con- cerned. Altogether they have done a fan- tastic job for the students. 21 Hard-Working Secretaries Keep Things Running Smoothly in The Office Well-known Mrs. Pippin became Mr. Milam ' s secre- tary this year. 22 L. to R.; Mr. Erasmi, Mrs. Buck, Mrs. Newcomb, Mrs. Atkins, Mrs. Gist, Mr. Poole. Absent: Mrs. Gregory. Guidance Few people appreciate all the hard work the guidance department puts into running the school. The counselors drove themselves crazy keeping track of the students and trying to arrange everyone ' s schedule to suit them, and the secretaries, Mrs. Atkins and Mrs. Newcomb, were kept more than busy just trying to organize everything. A word should also be put in for the guidance aides who were busy doing anything they could to help with the work load and give the counselors more time with the students. Without this vital group of people, the school could not have survived. ! « Mrs. Worst, a permanent substitute, smilingly takes over teacherless classes. 23 Custodians When the last bell rings, they don’t notice the mess left behind. Patient custodians linger and clean up remnants of a busy day. They are the backbone of York, for without them schoo l would be chaotic. Cafeteria Staff By mid-morning, tempting aromas drifted from the cafeteria, antagonizing hungry stu- dents. For an hour and a half the empty cafe- teria comes to life, with swarms of people bustling around. 24 Librarians Strive for Efficiency IBRARIANS, L. to R.: Mrs. Beachum, Mrs. Moul, and Mrs. Bruno. With cooperation of the classes, teachers could unlock doors that had been firmly closed. Behind the pads, cleats, and muddy uniforms, there were men willing to risk pulled hamstrings, dislocated shoulders, and minor cuts and bruises, just to win that big” game — and they did! Lead by John Riggs and Warren Pannill, co-captains. The Varsity Football team worked diligently through the summer preparing to win. The season began on September 7, where the determined Falcons met the “rookie” Rams. York was surprised” at the power Lafayette possessed and regretfully faced their first defeat, 20-0. A bad streak of luck followed York through another defeat, where Hampton smashed York’s hopes, 22-0. Then, just as York had unwillingly accepted two losses, the Falcons came alive and suc- ceeded in defeating five teams, literally shocking the peninsula fans. The most important victory was against Pembroke, where York won their first Homecoming in 1 3 years, gaining seven points and leaving Pembroke scoreless. Another important gain was seen against Menchville, where York made an impressive 5 interceptions, and left the field with a 23-14 victory. 38 York Takes the ' ' Juice ' ' Out of Big Orange Country Followed by two losses against Bethel and Ferguson, York faced it county rival on November 16 — The “Big Orange. The Fal- cons undoubtedly “caged the Tigers with an impressive 2 1 -7 win, ending the season with a 6-4 record, and leading the district in inter- ceptions. Post-season action found 1 2 York players on All-District teams, with Kevin Hogge, Johnny Robinson, and Marshall Wal- lace making the first team. Five Varsity players were honored as All-Eastern Regional nominees and again, Johnny Robinson and Kevin Hogge received hon- orable mention as All-State players. All in all, York ' s ' 73 Varsity Football season was an exciting, successful, and unforgettable one. The games won, and those lost, all contributed to the friends made in clean competition, the spirit gained throughout the student body, and the pride that was felt from knowing that “we did our best — AS ALWAYS! 39 L. to R., First Row: J. They led the crov ds in cheers despite the harsh winds, frozen fingers, and tangled hair. Three days a week, they remained after school to plan training tables for the Falcons, make spirit banners, practice cheers, plan pep rallies, and other school activities. When they got into a jam, the Varsity Cheerleaders would run to Mrs. Davey, their dedi- cated sponsor, who remained calm and collected and took care of all their catastrophies.” Thanks to the Victorious Falcons, the Varsity Cheerleaders successfully lead the student body through exciting wins and sometimes, heart-breaking defeats, with smiles and enthusi- asm. 42 L. to R. All the contestants performed beautifully and projected the needed poise and personality. The Senior Class was represented by five of their talented young ladies. Karen Wallace performed a free-dance routine, while Jo Harding played an original piece on the piano. Laura Kelly sang ‘Tm Gonna Wash That Man Right Our of My Hair from South Pacific. Sherri Spencer gracefully twirled batons and Wanda Barbour sang Trade Winds. The talents of the Junior Class in the pageant were: Peggy Alfriend, who played a concerto on the piano and Lori Millen who sang an original whimsical song while accompanying herself on the guitar. Long and hard practice is involved and many have done so for two years bringing many of the girls to their skills of present. Determination proved to be an outstanding characteristic, as a few of the team members attend a “Summer Camp,” for improvement in their field, whether it be floor exercise, uneven parallel bars, balance beam, or vaulting . . . “Specialists” . . . Team members “all-around” placed York High School second in the first two gymnastic meets. — 1 Basketball Sweetheart Tenseness vibrated the air as had the basketball just a few minutes earlier, under the supreme power of the Falcon Basketball Team. Though you may not have guessed from outward appear- ances, the Key Clubbers have experienced quite a few moments of sanity. These frequent breaks in their normal(?) daily lives have been of great benefit to the school and surrounding communities. Many little jobs around York have become habits to the Key Club, espe- cially guiding bewildered drivers to parking spaces during school functions, and changing the sign on the front lawn. They also had an entry in the parade, described by a few mem- bers as winning runner-up to last place.” When not helping York High, the Key Club divides much of its remaining time among several other projects. Saturdays are split between pounding cans, crushing glass, etc. at the Recycling Center in Williamsburg, and spending time on the Big Brother program. Whether they are holding an Eat-a-Thon to raise money for a charity, or working with the Kiwanis Club, the Key Club is more often than not up to some good. This very civic-minded organization is led by Pat Kelly — Pres., Eddie Russell — Vice- Pres., Scott Smith — Sec., John Duke — Treas., and Dean Hodge — Sergeant at Arms. 77 Keyettes S+ay Busy in School and Community L. to R., First Row: C. Few clubs would welcome the prospect of adopting a child as they did. While others were at home enjoying a vacation at Thanksgiving, Keyettes were busily preparing a dinner for a needy family. Occasional pajama parties found Key- ettes giggling over flying pillows, gossip and sleeping bodies. At school, lunch- time for Keyettes meant selling school supplies and leather goods in the “Key- ette Korner.” In all, it was a busy year for this industrious bunch of girls. 78 Falcon Staff Works Extra Hard for Spring Delivery Hampered by the energy crisis, the York High Yearbook staff still managed to pull through. This problem, added to the usual ones of lack of photos, inexperience, and “labor problems,” made it diffi- cult to meet deadlines. Since a June delivery was decided on, those glorious deadlines were even closer together than before. Along with early delivery, color was added as well as a summer supple- ment so all of the activities could be covered. Newness and near- ness sum up the FALCON. 81 Top to Bottom From Left: H. Talon Staff Despite no firm time to meet, no class set aside, and no experience, the Talon staff still tried to get a number of issues out. The largest was a bonus eight-page issue for Homecoming. This year proved to be quite a learning experience, especially trying to master the I.B.M. Executive type- writer and in manufacturing working time. The staff extends thanks to Mr. Beatty for covering up layout mistakes in printing the paper. Thanks also to the many students who were pulled in to work on the the paper at a moments notice. 82 Eboracum Love, life, nature, sorrow, joy. These are some of the thoughts and feelings partrayed by York High Students in their literary maga- zine, the Eboracum. The Eboracum is a sam- ple of these moods. The Staff, for the second consecutive year, held a contest to collect these samples. Students submit stories, poems, and photography showing their artis- tic ability. The magazine is compiled from material submitted. L. fo R.: M. Testa, D. Anglin, S. Kyser, J. Duke, M. Fallon, C. Siegel. (S. Kyser — Editor). 83 ALPHABET ICALLY: K. Allen, L. Angle, N. Bailey, M. The F.B.L.A. this year has been very busy. They started off the year with a big pizza bash. To earn money they have sold candy and plastic trash bags. They also took a field trip to Riverside. 88 Future Homemakers of America None of the madcap tendencies so commonly associated with a group of girls could hold true with the FHA. They danced to the music of Tyrone Bowers and The Newport Sound. Fire Breathing dragons from THE LORD OF THE RINGS looked down upon the dance. A sense of suspended ani- mation persisted as the couples floated from the Phoebus Room to the pool in back. The Climax of the evening was the distribution of class rings. A commotion followed as rings were admired and turned by friends. The goal was to receive 74 turns, and they looked with anticipation toward the night that their ring would be turned the 75th time. 91 M [ V L. to R. From Bottom J. Quoss, R. Oiokun, M. Knight, J. Forensics Forensics has given students at York High who enjoy public speaking an oppor- tunity to make speeches, to debate, and just practice speaking. They exhibited such skills as prose reading, poetry reading, spelling, and extemporaneous speaking. On January 30, a district level Forensics meet was held at Ferguson High School. Jason Grey received second place in Boy’s Prose Reading, Keith Carney, third place in Boy’s Extemporaneous Speaking, Sarsh Sibley, third place in Girl’s Poetry Read- ing, and Joel Quass, third place in Boy’s Original Oratory. Mime Troupe Once again the York High Mime Troupe chalked up a successful year freaking out teachers, adults, students and the general public. Performing both in school and numer- ous “public engagements, the troupe is now in its third year. It continues to expand in expressing thoughts in a quiet manner. Thespians Society “Camelot” brought many new initiates for the Thespians Society. To join this society, it is required that 300 hours of working in drama and stage work be completed. Members of the Thespian Society are also members of the National Honor Fraternity for Acting. Seniors will be happy to know that this method of joining also enables the student to be in the fraternity at their college. 93 Despite The Energy Crisis, The Show Did Go On! This year’s musical, “Camelot,” was a little different from some of York ' s musicals of the past. This show, more than virtu- ally any other, is known for its blend of heavy drama, comedy, inspiring music, and generally difficult parts. It required some outstanding acting on the part of the cast. Auditions came in December and after the cast was chosen, rehearsals began in January. Opening night was March 1 9, and the students and several members of the faculty made a lot of sacrifices to put long hours of practice into the success of the show. However, despite the technical problems, headaches, and tired, weary bodies, the satisfaction of having put on a great show and the new friends and relationships that developed made it all worthwhile. Special recognition should be given to Marc Knight, Jason Gray, Sheri Spencer, Laura Kelly, and Susan Freeman — sen- iors who had experience from working with York’s musicals for the past t wo years and contributed greatly to the success of this show. 94 95 96 -- ■nr ’ anr- ' ■ 113 114 nd Faculty Extra-Curricular Activities Classes Seniors Reach the Apex of Their Academic Career The Class of 74 not only faced on energy crisis but, for 3 years, has suffered an identity crisis. We didn’t know where we came from, where we were going, how we came about, and whether we should even consider those questions. A lead and a leader was needed. The call went out and Warren Pannill responded and responded and responded. For three years Warren has lead the Class through some very trying times towards the primrose path of intellectual stimulation and extra-curricular activity. Our Sophomore year offered the opportunity to show our true character and capabilities. Our magazine campaign was a success (as far as we were concerned). Our Homecoming chicken (A Falcon?) failed to win us anything except a lot of fun and the heart of some rooster down in Tabb country. Rosie Driver and Donna Newsome were our Homecoming representatives. As Juniors, we matured and began to look ahead to graduation. We came back to York that year with many faces lent to fill the halls of Tabb. Rosie Driver, Beverly Wright and Cathy Weatherly added a crown of beauty to the pace setting float that easily took first place at Home- coming. Our dancing Snoopy was a hit at the game and at Wornom’s Drug Store where it ended its career rather abruptly. Later in the year the Seniors informed us that we were not invited to the Prom, so we had a Junior Ring Dance on the third of February at the Sheraton Hotel. The highlight of the evening was the awarding of the coveted class rings under a wishing well. Time came for the school musical, “Guys and Dolls. As Juniors, we were there in force. Mark Knight, Karen Wallace, Joel Quass, Jan Koman, Jason Gray, and many others (would that we could name them all, Sheri, Steve, Cathy, Mark, Doug, Joretta, Lee, Teresa, Lynne, Rosie, Martha, and still many more.) Mark still owes the stage crew for craps losses. Cindy Smoot made finals in Miss York High. Summer approached and so did Boys ' and Girls’ State. Warren Pannill, Joel Quass, and Bill Hart took on the men’s section while Kathy Hogge, Nitza Rosario and Karen Wallace charmed the women’s half. Senior year came to our wanderings. We won overwhelming acclaim and first place again in the Homecoming float contest. Bonnie Johnson was our Queen with Jo Harding and Kathy Pompei as her Senior Attendants. We were the first Senior Class to have a Homecoming victory in 1 3 years. A nice cap to add to the first parade at Homecoming. Again Seniors lead the way on the field. Dano Phillips, Warren Pannill, Mike Jacobs, John Riggs, Johnny Robinson, Marshall Wallace, Billy Auman, Emmett Harman, Jim Foss, Dewayne Lewis, John Washington, Ed Whitby, Lee Hathaway, Jimmy Gray, David Squires all contributed to the Homecoming victory and to a fantastic winning season.
