Lamb The1r manager of course was none other than Betty Lou Dunston who also d r1v e s the 1 r bu s from c1ty to c1ty and handles the1r bus1ness affa1rs Then my attent1on was caught by a commot1on 1n the corner V1v1an Hogg and H L Smoot they were marr1ed the day they graduated from h1gh school were frantmcally try1ng to get lt across to thelr seven year old tw1n boys that they weren't supposed to be hang1ng ups1de down from the gym rafters l1ke chxmpan zees To the1r rescue went Rlchard Stratton and Samuel I-Ioneycutt the world famous 'Acrobatlc Wonders ' V1v1anfa1nted from all the excltement but luck1ly Patr1c1a Burcher a nurse was nearby and rev1ved V1v1an expertly by throwmg aglass ofcold water on her face Nurse Burcher after many years of research and study came out w1th the amaz1ng fact that 50070 of all marr1ed people are men a truly r e mar kable d1scovery Suddenly I saw an old buddy of m1r1e Claude Keckler He was Colonel Keckler now and he looked so mmportant m h1s umform that I almost felt hke salut1ng' ' Why COLONEL Keckler Sald I 'and how 1S army l1fe'? ' I th1nk we must have gone on for about f1fteen mlnutes rel1v1ng our h1gh school days when we were Jo1ned by Jack Moore and R1chard H1cks Jack and Rlchard were work1ng together f1nd1ng and over haullng old cars to sell to wealthy collectors the1r 11fet1me amb1t1on' We talked and laugh ed about our Enghsh and Sol1d Geometry days together for almost half an hour before return1ng to the aud1tor1um for the rest of the celebrat1ng There we were the f1rst to w1tness the newest product1on of playwmght Douglas Padgett called North Pac1f1c or The Romance of Elmo the Esk1mo The star was bel1eve lt or not John Montgomery who 1n the play portrayed Elmo a thorough ly confused Esk1mo who 1S madly 1n love w1th the lovely young Esk1mo ma1d en Ooga played by Nancy G1bbS The compl1cat1ons began to p1le up when the nears1ghted Elmo m1stakes a seal for Ooga and marr1es lt 1nstead of the g1rl wh1ch all turns out for the best 1n the end s1nce Mama Esk1mo played by Anne Ruterbush and Ooga s slster Pooga Carolyn Stephens need Ooga at home any way to keep the home f1res burnxng 1n the whale o1l lamps After the applause dled down I notlced Pulltzer Prlze w1nner Sh1rley Severance 1n the audxence She won the coveted pr1ze for her Journahsm work as ed1tor of the New York T1mes Then look1ng around I spotted a snapp1ly dressed young man talk1ng to Benjamln Rush the nat1onally famous news commentator Just as I thought t was Alex G1ll1k1n who as a salesman had worked h1s way to the top and was now head clothes consultantfor the Pres1dent of the Un1ted States It was grow 1ng late by then the even1ng was almost over and I very t1red but very happy made my way reluctantly to the door Before I left though I saw a group of people crowd1ng around someone Well I'm as cur1ous as anyone lhad to see what was caus1ng all the commot1on Yes lt was Mrs Amemca, of 1965 none other than Dor1s Taylor Wh1te' I had heard of her success but never ex pected to see her back at York H1gh aga1n' In fact Ihadn't expected to see such great suc c e s s for so many of my former classmates But they all had gone forth from school on that long ago day 1n June to happmess success and well fu1f1lled amb1t1ons And so w1th a l1ght heart and many del1ghtful exper1 ences to hold and treasure as memor1es for the years to come I walked out 1n to the cool n1ght a1r and to my car D I 29 ' I D ! . . S1gnal l1ghts always turn red when you are 1n a hurry It never fa1ls' I pull ed to a stop and wa1ted 1mp at1ently for the green l1ght All week I had been nervously ant1c1pat1ng the arr1val of th1s n1ght and now lt was here at last' The b1g n1ght the reun1on of the Class of 55' It's so hard to bel1eve that ten whole years have gone by s1nce that day 1n June when we marched together down the 315165 at York H1gh School 1n our caps and gowns for the last t1me Ten whole years' The consohdated Clty of York the locat1on of the world famous York O11 Ref1nery now spreads out over what was once Yorktown Seaford and Hornsby v1lle Why there are subways and new bus l1nes all over the Clty and even the h1gh school has expanded' I fought through the heavy traff1c and turned 1n at the s ch ool L1ghts were on all over the place and the change 1n appearance was so great that I hardly recogmzed my old ' alma mater ' Why Just look at all the cars I mused I th1nk the whole Clty must ha turned out for th1s occas1on ' By th1S t1me I was so over exc1ted that my stom ach was turn1ng fl1ps so I qu1ckly parked at the c urb stepped out and turned to go 1nto the school Well 1f lt 1sn't and I do bel e t excla1med fam1l1ar volce beh1nd me Startled I turne d and almost bumped noses Wlth Dav1d Green Dave I sa1d you haven't changed a b1t' I've heard all about your success w1th the Cleveland B r own s I also heard that you had to res1gn after knoc klng the off1c1al ov e r the head w1th the Water bucket 1n your last game You th1nk that s bad came the 1nev1table reply No Dave ' I laughed you certamly haven't changed at all Hey' wasn t that Gene Wornom who Just went 1ns1de'P' Yea drawled Dav1d he took over h1s father's sto and IS mak1ng m1ll1ons 1n the 'Wornom cha1n stores all ove r the country Betty Sue Lawrence IS h1s pr1vate secretary and Lel1a Dawson bel1eve lt or not works at the perfume sect1on Fromwhat I hear she scares the customers half to death w1th her new French accent As Dav1d and I walked 1nto the fam1l1ar aud1tor1um and took ou r seats all the l1ghts d1mmed and on toaplatform stepped none other than Ed Gulden the leader of the Golden Gulden FIVE ' who played on h1S saxpohone thr recent song h1t Slberlan Serenade or Malenkov Loves Mambo Everyone applauded w1ldly and as the l1ghts came back on Ilooked to my r1ght and saw a very small someone who was bu s 1ly tak1ng notes on a Sllp of paper get pract1cally c a r r 16 d off by a movmg crowd of people Sure enough lt was Sh1rley Saunders ace reporter for the Da11y M1stake always on the Job and she ha sn 't grown an 1nch taller' In a few moments the spotl1ght turned on none other than Delores 'Tex Sears Tex had to leave her guns at the door but you should have seen her d 0 the bop 1n those cowboy boots' Tex owns the largest cattle ranch 1n Texas and her two top cowhands are Buck The Mar1ne Paulett and Dav1d Rov Rogers R1chardson both as you guessed Just retlred from a br1ll1ant career Wlth the Mar1nes Play1ng for 'Tex was Anne Presson who b r oke a two weeks engagement at Carneg1e Hall to attend her class reun1on Nearly all of the h1ts songs of the day have been wr1tten by Anne and she 1S 1n w1de demand for appearances all over the country Then as the crowd moved to the gymnas1um for refreshments I saw Sh1rley Lloyd and Carole Chaff1n w1th the1r husbands each try1ng to control the1r f1ve Chlldren who 1ns1sted onh1d1ng under the refreshment table and scar1ng the guests Serv refreshments were three of York H1gh School ' s best l1ked teachers Jean Elk1ns Ann Upton and .Ioan Savage Suddenly there was a roar from outs1de and everyone ru she d to the doors Sure enough as could be expected there were the two Bobby's Brandt and Hansford do1ng stunts 1n the1r prefabr1cated hel1copters After that nerve rack1ng l1ttle ep1sode was over the celebrat1ng cont1nued th1s t1me w1th a marvelous exh1b1t1on of basketball Sklll by three of the famou s g1rl Globe Trotters ' Jamce Wood Sally Suzberger and Sarah 28 I 0 - . . . . , - . . 3 ' , n 9 ' . , 9 ' 9 ' I H .
