646071 In the school year 1953 54 there came a. momentous announce ment to all the h1gh school students who res1de 1n York County In September 1954 a new h1gh s c hool would b e opened Almost every student throughout the county was Joyous over th1s but there were some who were not so happy to enter the1r last year 1n a new school Nevertheless along wmth the others who entered th1s new school all w1de eyed and exc1ted wonder1ng over the new exper1 ences wh1ch lay before them we came Thus on September 7 agroup of forty one senlors gathered to gether 1n the new school aud1tor1um to become the sen1ors of York H1gh School for the school year 1954 55 These students had pre v1ously atte nd e d other publ1c schools 1n the county or adJo1n1ng count1es and others had gone to pr1vate 1nst1tut1ons We were all pract1cal1y strangers but w1th1n a few weeks we had become well acqualnted w1th our fellow senlors and l1ke the classmen below us we were soon very pleased to be a part of such a thr1ll1ng ex per1ence as the new school was to us Of course we would never forget the wonderful t1me s we had had 1n our prev1ous schools but slowly we were adJust1ng ourselv es to our new surround1ngs ln our last and most 1mportant year we chose as class presl dent Counc1l ASSOC1at1OD by the ent1re student body Many clubs were organ1zed1nwh1ch we took a very act1ve part Now another exper1ence calls us graduat1on We have come through f1ve years of h1gh school w1th many defeated hardsh1ps behmd us and have reached the top of the ladder The musxc we hear 1n the d1stance sends a d1fferent message to each of our hearts We wonder as we wa1t for our d1plomasJust what our fellow graduates are thmk 1ng To some the call 1S to further educat1on To others lt means 1mmed1ate employment to st1ll others marr1age wh1le to those already marr1ed durmg the year lt means estabhshmg a home But whatever the call we feel ready to assume our respons1b1l1ty and to do our best Just as we have done th1s past year We leave Y H S as 1ts f1rst graduates w1th afeehng of sad ness w1th the knowledge that no more shall we assemble together as a group of happy c ar efr e e semors but we al s o leave w1th proud and conf1dent hearts as we accept th1s opportumty to take our place 1n a mature world 24 l I dent, Alex Gillikin.
