You have meant a great deal to the new York High School as it embarked on its first session in 1954 - 55. The help that you have rendered in developing the philosophy and spirit will long be remembered by the faculty as well as me. As we grow spiritually, profes- sionally and physically through the com- ing years we hope that you will remember us and return to your alma mater. In October we toured Jamestown Island in connection with our study of the settling of the New World. While there we visited the Museum to see how the first colonists live. Other places we toured were the old church, the grounds, and the relic house. We ate our picnic lunch which we had brought with us near the Museum. In March we entertained the P. T. A. with a music festival under the direction of Mrs. Albert Richards. The girls wore pastel colored dresses made ballerina style. The boys wore white shirts, dark pants, and dark bow ties. A variety of songs popular, classical, and patriotic was sung. Highlights of the program were the girls singing Alice Blue Gown , and the boys C1ancy Lowered the Boom . Other activities inculded soap sculpture, string painting, classroom libraries, parties at Halloween, Christmas, and other holidays. Several students entered paintings which were exhibited at the Teachers Conference. The Seventh Grades also helped the high school in many welfare drives. They sponsored the Junior Red Cross Drive for the high school. One of the sections ranked second in the sale of magazines for the S. C. A. Looking forward tothe next year when we shallenter high school, we have tried to be helpful and cooperative in every way. lst. row, left to right: Mrs. Helen Holben, Virginia Wood, Jeanette Shields, Lynn Ferguson, Patsy Moore, Mary Louise Wood,SandraSaunders,JoanStevens, Katherine Flannery, Mamye Wood, Marsha Johnson, Martha White, Judy Hogg, Mrs. Elsie Carpenter, Mrs. Adrienne Place. 2nd, row, Becky Baker, Polly Atherton, Shirley Morris, Lynn Lilley, Ruth Gibson, Suzanne Bartlett, Patty Conner, Carolyn Harris, Ruth Hill, Dianne Gibson, Agnes Rowe, Kaye Burcher, Edna Comden, BrendaBeck. 3rcl. row,Pearl Wilson, Doris Hautz, Bonnie Caldwell, Dorothy Gilbert, Jane HOSE, Jacqueline Walker, Annette Stephens, Jacqueline Forrest.Jud ith Riley, Carolyn Ellis, Eunice Sampson, Kathryn Ann Sheild, Mary Wood, Virginia Martin, Marla Johnson. 4th. row, Tommy Stowe, Gilbert Firth, Alex White, Eugene Davis, Willard Hunt,Jack Smith, Theodore Gibbon,James Barker, Robert Gulden, George Emery, Jerry Stratton, Robert Bryant, David Fleming, Beverly Bryant, NanGood. 5th, row,CharlesBurcher, Carter Butler, William Thomas Shields, Willie Toxey, Frank Plotz, George Arnder, Preston Smith, Allen Davis, Thomas Fairfield, Herbert Hansford, John Luyendyk, George Snidow, Billy Knights,Shirley Beecham, Yvonne Withee. 6th, row, Bobby Akers, Roger Eveland, Robert Green, Clyde Christmas, George l-licks,George Hamm, Phillip Presson, Donald Hogge, Gene Paulett, Frank Meigs, Michael Houle, Michael McGrath, Johnny McQueary, Kennith Manuel, Tommy Stuller. i 1 l 1 1 A A - - - l 53:15 Zend 21' and lst. row, left to right: Miss Gladys Hammontree, Mrs. Alice Wilson, Jackie Emerson, Suzanne Eisenbeis, Carolyn Shelton, Janice Meredith, Judy Riggins, Shirley Harper, Genevieve Martin, Patricia Waller, Joan Mills, Celesta Emerson,JanetConstance,Joanne Eveland, Mrs. Edith Fuller. 2nd. row, Carol Martin, Myrna Holloway, Nancy Bel- vin, Mary Patrick, Mary Hopkins, Ruth Vaught, Mavis Terry', Betty Bateman, Mary Scott, Nancy Palmer, Betty Davis, Louise Menges, Faye Lloyd, Judy Booth, Betty Hill, Julia Sutton, Katie O'Hara. 3rd. row, Patsy Howard, Shirley Gaines, Barbara Llewellyn, Angeline Lamb, Nancy Belda, Linda Wilson, Patricia Killian, Barbara Lowery, Carol Lindsay, Patsy Bridwell, MargaretGillikin, Carolyn Mills, Susan Winfree, Patsy Teague, Ocie Cobin. 4th, row, Ron- nie Mitchell, George Hogge, Raymond Dehart, Donnie Teague, Anson Klink, Billy Gill, Dennis Neill, Skippy Tay- lor, Allen Hogg, David Flowers, Fred Honeycutt, Charles Lovitt, Selina Derery, John Lee Burke. 5th. row, Jimmy Riggins, Thomas Calendar, Johnny Waller, Douglas Stephens, Leon Diehl, Donnie Burke, Carleton Purgold, Ray Wood,Laverne Smoot,Wayne Eagle, Keith Rackley, Lucas Hicks, Jimmy Rash, Billy Majette, John Callis. 6th. row, WalterCooper, ArthurLovitt,Dicky Belvin, Robert Burcher, Donnie Hedgebeth, Dickie Worthington, Chris Ferguson, Jeff Newman, Lionel Wilson, Rommie Strickland, Billy Stafford, Wilbur Dawson, Joel Snyder, Randolph Fairfield. Since music is auniversallanguage one ofthe great contributions has been the folk and art songs of these countries. As a special project the sixth grades memorized a group of these songs and presented them to the patrons of the ParentTeacher Association of YorkHigh School inlanuary under the direction of their instructor Mrs. Albert Richards. They were accompanied by Nellie Rae Medaris, piano, and Alex Gillikin, trumpet. During the spring months the sixth grades are planning a number of field trips to various points of interest to further their studies in science and community life. In 5 effg, s .V , gk ,s . Matthew Whaley Gloucester ... Smithfield . . . Franklin . . . . Deep Creek . . York--0 Prince George--12 This was the first game for us this sea- son and even though we lost 13-0, we put up a very good defense with Walter Presson and Gene Wornom starring. Our only offense was when H. L. Smoot broke through the middle for 45 yards before being pulled down from behind. York--0 Matthew Whaley--14 In the first quarter we were stopped seven yards of a touchdown with Matthew Whaley gaining fourteen points in the sec- ond and fourth quarters. Halfback Martin Shelton was York's offensive star, and H. L. Smoot was a defensive stand. Co-Cap- tain and Tackle, David Green, played all the way and was a sharp line defender. York-- Gloucester--43 This was a hard fought game with one of Gloucester's players getting his leg broken with the same accident happening to our Center, Alex Gillikin, which was a great loss for us. Despite our loss, Guard Dale Krigsvold and End Walter Presson made a large percentage of our tackles, while Krigsvold blocked two extra point tries from placement and a punt to give York the ball deep in Gloucester territory on the fifteen yard line. York--0 Smithfield--26 At the opening of the game we drove 53 yards before losing possession of the ball. Standouts for York were Tackles, David Green and John Gravely and Guards, Gene Wornom and Dale Krigsvold. York--7 Franklin--lZ York broke the scoring ice early in the opening quarter, scoring its first touchdown of the year after End Douglas Padgett re- covered a fumble on the Franklin nine -yard line. The score athalftime was 7-6 in favor of York, but Franklin gained another touch- down in the second half giving them the vic- tory. York--9 Deep Creek--38 This being our last game and leading at halftime 6-0 with Brandt making the touch- down and Richardson making the conver- sion, we thought we had a victory at hand. However, during the second half Deep Creek scored 38 points. Our defensive stars were Tacklers. David Green and Carl Cunning- ham, Guard, Gene Wornom, End, Douglas Padgett and Fullback, H. L. Smoot also starred offensively. 65 Our first football season was not very successful if we are thinking primarily of scores. What is more important is that we have gained a year's invalu- able experience in team work and have demonstrated that it is not the way that a school wins that counts but the way that it plays. May all the future teams of York High School show in victory the same spirit of determination and sportsmanship that the 1954 football squad showed in defeat! Coach Simpson Co-Captains David Green and Gene Womom .Iozilla Medaris Beverley Cooke Judy Hodge Barbara Gilruth Patricia Burcher f We congratulate you, the cheerlead- ers of York High School, for doing sucha fine job dur- ing Football and Basketball seasons. They were very capably headed by Captain Dale Krigsvold, and although they didn't win many games they gave a good account of themselves losing four games by a single point. The younger members of the team gained much valuable experience and will be much stronger next season. The members of the team who will be lost through graduation are Douglas Padgett and Claude Keckler. 68 kr York York York York York York York York York York York York York . t, York x QQ SCOREBOARD Ld. Standing, Coach Simpson. . W Q The J. V. Club of 54'-55', the first of York High, did not have a very suc- cessful season if you are just concerned with the scores. Lack of experience took its toll on the boys, as it was the first year they had engaged in basketball competition: however, they gained much invaluable experience working together. The York J. V.'s had an overall record of 0-7 for the season. Coach Siinpson is hoping to have an assistant to work with the boys next year, and they are looking forward to having a very prosperous season in 55'-56'. 70 Ill III lst. row, left to right: Joan Savage, Managerg Peggy Proffitt, Sarah Lamb, Miss Rawls, Coach: Janice Wood, Joanne Belda, Emma Raley, Shirley Lloyd, Manager. 2nd row, left to right: Jane Comick, Betty Lou Dunston, Bemadette Lamb, Barbara Lloyd, Ann Giles, Ann Green. 3rd row, left to right: Janet Barnes, Carolyn Good, Betty Wood, Janet Ward, Phyllis Shelton. , 1 The team fought hard all season and as a result won seven games while los- ing only four. This was accomplished through the able leadership and guidance of their coach, Miss Rawls. Many of the girls had never played together before and some of them had never met. However, with Sarah Lamb and Janice Wood as Co-captains, the girls quickly combined their talents to make a winning team. The girls seemed to have been playing together for a long time.
