Coach FOrresT Birks, adding anoTher successful season To his already enviable record, had Tour reliable IeTTermen reTurning To To build his Team around. They were seniors WaITer Kirk, Bill ShineTIug, and Ron HarTmann, and WaITer STrauch, iunior. Jack FaITer up Trom The Trosh soph squad helped ouT considerably. AIThough Dave Nygren was ineligible unTiI aTTer The beginning OT The second semesTer, he did a Tine job in The second round OT conTerence play and in The regional TOurnamenT. John GOITermann, Dick McConnell, George Olsen and Bob STanTOn, reserves, also saw acTion. The Dukes Tinished cOnTerence play wiTh a II-3 record Talling To La Grange Twice and upseT by Hinsdale, Their Tinal game. The York hOOpsTers downed Elgin. EasT Aurora, and WesT Chicago, losing To ThornTon OT Harvey by Three poinTs in non-cOnTerence play. WalTer Kirk, York's agile cager, who capTained This year's Team scored 287 poinTs in conTerence play giving him a respecTable 20.5 average per game. His TOTaI Tor The season was 358 poinTs. STrauch was nexT in line wiTh a IO.2 average. York had her dreams smashed in The Tinal round in regional play aT Proviso by Oak Park.
