Their 8-5-1 record was the second best in college history and the best in nine years. For the first time, the Spartans were ranked as high as twelfth for N.C.A.A. Division III Colleges in the Middle Atlantic States. A key factor in the team ' s success was their strong defensive play. These defensive plays were spearheaded by seniors Brian Forde, Dave Pavlini, and Jim Poulson. Also playing a tough net position were Dave McCullougn and Ed Hernandez. Down at the offensive end of the field, York was led by Wally Weimer and Hans Kayser who scored 7 goals each. Also adding to the scoring punch were Marty Schnaars, Scooter Farling, and Jose Herdpiza. With first year coach Pat Massa and many key players returning, the Spar- tans are looking forward to another successful season in the Fall of ' 81. 103 Volleyball The year 1980 was seen as a rebuilding time for the Spartan women ' s volleyball team. Volleyball, usually one of York ' s stronger sports, was hit with many key players graduating the year before. To make up for this player loss, the girls had to play each match with intensity. Unfortunately, many matches were lost by only a few points. One thing that did help the team along was the strong support of the York College fans who cheered them on during home matches. Next year the girls should be able to return to their winning ways. This was considered a successful year because the team was made up of many young players who will be the key to the team ' s future. Among this youth were four-year letter winners Patt Cianciullo, Marilyn Dorsey and Sharon Engle who were positive influences to the team. With the leadership of Katie O ' Donnoghue and the strong defensive plays by Alison Kinkel and freshman Sue Snyder, 1982 should be a good year for the Spartan stick women. fe •ut aO. Coach Achtzehn ' s disappointment was some- what lessened by several factors. First, the schedule was highly competitive, in- cluding six NCAA Division II teams and four NCAA Division III teams which finished in the top 20 of Division III. Se- cond, four of the eight losses suffered were close matches which could have gone either way. Last, the varsity line-up for each match consisted mainly of freshmen, 6 to 8 a match. In post-season competition, nine York College wrestlers participated in the NCAA Division III Eastern Regional Quali- fying Tournament at Salisbury State Col- lege. York College wrestlers had six runners-up, and three thirds in the tour- nament. Rich Wileczek, 2nd at 118 lbs., Dave Alemi, 2nd at 150 lbs., Mark Alessi, 2nd at 190 lbs. This was impressive, but with the whole team returning, next year ' s should be even better. Led by the hustling of Captains Donna Hess and Katie O ' Donnoghue, the team was able to overcome their lack of size. Also adding to the fine play and quickness were Sue Snyder, Kelly Lauer, Barb Voight, and Kate Setting. The backbone of this year ' s team was newcomer Cindy Bowman. She led the team in both scoring and rebounding, while still improving throughout the year. One key injury that slowed down the York Machine was the one to Cindy Clacken. At the time of her loss, she was scoring 13 points a game and rebounding about 8. Look out for her return and more success for the women next year. Swimming The Men ' s Swim Team had one of its toughest seasons ever in 1980-81. After the loss of many key swimmers due to graduation, then the loss of their coach and then many potential swim- mers deciding not to swim, became all factors contributing to this team ' s problems. The re- maining swimmers, through their dedication, showed great possibilities in forming the backbone for a fine team for the future. The leading scorer for the team was freshman Brian MacCausland who showed great strength in the 200 and 500 freestyle events. The two breaststrokers were Bob Herman and Chuck Connolly. The captain of the team, Ken Nysmith, controlled the freestyle sprints and made a good showing through the season. The one diver Chuck Schmidt had a winning season holding his won against almost all competition. Covering the distance events was the only returning swimmer Clay Simpson and freshman Tony Mingora. ROW 1: Elaine Brussock, Michele Peters, Colleen Fox, Donna Quinn (captain), Deb Kurtz, Kathy Zartman. ROW 2: Tony Mingora, Clay Simpson, Ken Nysmith, Bob Herman, Coach Pat Stinson. ROW 3: Mike Sagan, Chuck Connolly, Bryan MacCausland, Chuck Schmidt. This was the first year of a separate Women ' s Swim Team and the results were very good. Although they had only seven members, they had a winning season because of the hard working and talented swimmers. Senior Captain Donna Quinn has set several records on the women ' s board and controlled the freestyle events. Another senior was Deb Kurtz, who was strong in the breaststroking events. Their loss will put a lot of pressure on the young but tough freshmen who were hard to beat this year. These freshmen included Michele Peters, Judy Kane, Kathy Zartman, and diver Colleen Fox. The outstanding point earner was Elaine Brussock who was very strong in the but- terfly events. This fine record was posted even though injuries sidelined key players during the year. Starting forward Quez Crawford missed the last 17 games, starting guards Cor- nell Chappell missed 4 and Kenny Riddick missed 5; all due to knee injuries. With these injuries, the excellent play of the reserves was a key factor in the Spartan ' s winning season. A noteworthy statistic is that against Division III schools, York posted a 11-5 record. This was also a year for many individual achievements. Captain Al Moyer set game and season rebounding records. Al gathered 19 rebounds against Lock Haven and 228 for the season. Ken Riddick added to his list of records scoring 23.2 average per game. Kenny has established three career records: most points (1447), most field goals (593), and free throws than all players of York College history. Sophomore Gary Johnson set a season field goal percentage record going 116 for 213 (.545). With only 27 men, it was tough to field a quality team. But the trackmen were able to win two of their six meets. Though the team ' s future does look brighter because of the fact that the team will lose only one graduating senior, unfortunately that senior is Kenny Sanders. Kenny was named this year ' s Most Valuable Track and Field Performer and has been a leader for the Spartan Footmen for four years. Kenny ' s shoes will certainly be hard to fill. But with the return of many key members such as Steve Donnelly, Mark Hanson, Rick Buablitz, Ron Scifers, Tom Shay, Bob Perkins, and many others, this team should have a suc- cessful 1982. m ' ? ■ w r- ROW 1: Mark Stanley, Tony Mingora, Daryn Billed, Rick Bauslitz, Steve Donnelly, Keith Matthews, Pete Dorr ROW 2: Ken Sanders, Ron Scifers, Mike Ortega, Rick Lehman, |oe Kushnenck, Chip White, Chuck Stella. Following these two were Greg Hess and Dave Chappel, who were not far behind with 84 ' s. Rounding out the field were Tom Clare, Rod Johnson, and Mike Mullarkey. The success of the team was contributed by the all-around spirit and quality of the players. During the year the girls had to struggle for a win on the road (1-5) but remained undefeated on their home field until the last double-header with Gettysburg when the teams split. Patt Cianciullo shared much of her softball knowledge with her teammates and helped Coach Reid throughout the season.
