A Year of Competing Learning Further Qtrengthens Our Pride in Y.C.P.! Seniors In Tribute ■ _ IU Monica L. Woodard October 16. 1957-August 16, 1979 The Senior Section is dedicated to Monica Woodard who was a member of this class until her death August 16, 1979. A memorial scholarship fun has been established by the college ' s Afro-American Club, where she had served as treasurer. A Tribute to Monica L. Woodard A heart so kind — a face so dear, The pain of her passing was hard to bear. Although she was aware of her condition, Monica maintained a strong and constant ambition. She never moaned, groaned or complained, A smile on her face always remained. An angel came from heaven one night, And Monica departed from our sight. Cod does things he feels are best, Monica Woodard is now at rest. by Neicey Hudson (member of Afro-American Club) cM M. The record, however, does not turly reflect the overall success of the team. York dropped the weak sisters normally found on our schedule and added such powers as King ' s, Philadelphia Textile, and Dickonson in order to add more competition for the runners. Mark Raubenstine and Ken Sanders provided keen competition between them, usually finishing 1st and 2nd. Mark also set a new record on the Resivoir Hill course. The Women ' s Cross Country season was a first for York College. The small, but very ambitious team started slowly, then picked up momentum winning two of the last five meets. This was outstanding considering the majority of the team members had no prior experience. The nucleus was freshmen Darla Berkowitz and Carol Warren, and sophomores Karen Cobb, Kim Ferguson, and Kim Cay. Darla was the leading runner throughout the year while Kim Gay, nursing a pre-season foot injury, provided the enthusiastic leadership to motivate the team. With these ladies returning for not one, but two or three more seasons there appears to be a brilliant future for Women ' s Cross Country. Soccer FROM ROW: (I lo R) Scott Stuart, Scott Tattar. Although the final log stood at 3-9-1, the team took virtually every game into the final minutes before the victor could be decided. Of the five games ending in overtime, York lost four and tied one. York simply lacked the edge on manpower, not talent in most games since many of the York players went the full 90 minutes of regulation time and 20 minutes of overtime without substitution. Senior goalkeeper Bill McEntee registered his first shutout as York defeated Allentown 9-0 before the Homecoming Parent ' s Day crowd. However the next seven games saw York winning six. At this point Senior Captain Scott Mummert injured a knee and was sidelined for the duration of the season. The Spartans managed just four wins in the remaining thirteen games, finishing a respectful 10-16. With Mummert the only Senior on the team, the underclassmen provided tremendous determination and talent. Among these players was Sophomore Ken Riddick who set records with ease — including most points; 540, average per game: 20.8 and field goals made 221 . Ken is already second in c areer scoring with 959 and only needs 447 more points to pass Sc ott Bortner as all-time leading scorer. Scott Mummert ' s abbreviated season did not stop him from setting career records in free-throws made: 233 and field goal percentage; 502. Scotl is also third all-time scorer with 933 pts. With all but Mummert returning, next season should be both exciting and successful. In tournament competition the team placed eighth in the YCP Invitational and fifith in the Washington and Lee Invitational. Senior Jeff Maher was the only Spartan wrestler to win an individual championship in either tournament although several York grapplers did finish second and third. In post-season competition six YCP wrestlers participated in the NCAA Division III Eastern Regional Qualifying Tournament. Senior |oe Mahon was York ' s only qualifier for the national tournament but was eliminated from the tournament in an early round. Even though the success of this year ' s team can ' t compare to that of previous teams, their attitude and character can be compared.
