Academic Excellence Alpha Chi is a co-educational society whose purpose is to pro- mote academic excellence and exemplary character among college and university students and to honor those achieving such distinc- tion. A general honor society as contrasted with a specialized one, it admits to membership all academic disciplines rather than a single area of study. Annually, the Pennsylva- nia Delta Chapter at York College admits to active membership those juniors and seniors of good charac- ter who rank at least in the upper 5% of their classes. Aside from offering the average list of courses needed to satisfy major requirements, the college in coop- eration with the Language Depart- ment allows a student to spend the May Minimester in the German speaking countries of Europe. Three-credit hours are given for the course offered every other year. However, much more than credits are obtained by those travelling through Germany, Austria, Switzer- land, Northern Italy-Tyrol, and Eastern France. A student obtains a firsthand look at European culture and finds it much easier to learn German in countries where it is being spoken as the native tongue. Three days are also spent in Ice- land visiting the ancient Germanic historical sites. The picture on page 1 1 is a picture of the Midsummer- night ' s Sun taken in Iceland at mid- night by Herr Hosch, during the 1977 minimester. The season began just over a week later with a narrow loss to Loyola. After the next meet, a win over Elizabethtown, illness forced Coach Jaquet to absent himself from coaching for several weeks. In the meantime. Coach Achtzehn, assisted by student manager Rick Maclver, kept the team on course. Moving forward from a 3-3 record at the end of Sep- tember, the team defeated all remaining competitors except powerful Millersville State. The team ended with a record of 13-4. Several times during the season the fifth, sixth, or seventh man on the squad supplied team victory points, prompting Coach Jaquet to remark that This was probably the best balanced team in York ' s cross country histo- ry. Senior squad members included Walt Hamm, Robert Weiker, and co-captains Steve Dauch and Brian Tonitis. Cross Country ROW 1: Mark Raubenstine, Steve Dauch, Steve Ferree, Brian Tonitis, Dave Deck ard. ROW 2: Rick Maclver, Jeff Wear, Walt Hamm, Rulon Wetherill, Robert Wei kert, Keith Ensor, Coacfi Acfitzehn. First-year coach Keith Peterman summed up the soccer team ' s season as a year of trials and frustrations. Early in September the young squad won its preseason match against Western Maryland 3-2. In the same game veteran fullback Phil Graybill suffered an injury that prevented him from playing for much of the season. Four games passed before the team scored its first and only season victory, a 2-0 win over Mt. Saint Mary ' s College. For most of the remaining season, according to Coach Peterman, York ' s games were well played defensively, but lacked the offensive drive necessary to score. The soccer team ' s final record was 1-10; however, the coach feels that much valuable experience was gained which will benefit next year ' s team. NOT PICTURED: Phil Graybill, Andrew Dougherty. w % w After two weeks of practice. Coach Reid ' s field hockey team began its season with a 6-2 win over visiting Loyola. The team ' s next game, an away match against Franklin and Marshall (the defending conference champions), resulted in York ' s first setback. Continuing on the road for the next three games, the team won only one match for a record of 2-3 by early October. At home for all but one remaining game, the York women reversed the tide to finish with a 7-4-1 record and fourth place in the Penn-Mar Conference. The high point of the season came in the game against Messiah when the York team came from behind several times to tie the match at 3-3. Because it was a conference game an overtime was played, during which York scored in the last minute to win 5-4. Senior team members included Betsy Boswell and Leslie Brant, the latter competing in her fourth season. A three game winning streak early in the season, including a win over Coach Camber ' s Millers- vllle alma mater, produced high hopes for the team. By the end of January the team had compiled an 8-6 record, but went on to win only two of its remaining ten games. Seniors on the York team included Al Clark, Lyie Herr, and Scott Bortner. Bortner led the Spartans in scoring, setting a York College record by accumulat- ing over 1 300 points during his collegiate basketball career. Hampden-Sydney Washington and Lee U. Five weeks without organized practice followed, causing conditioning goals to remain unrealized. Midseason difficulties, however, did not pre- vent the team from compiling a 10-5 record. Later, at Tri-States, York placed fourth. Two Spartan divers. Jay Johnson and Bill Degnen, competed at the Division III NCAA Nationals in Grinnell, Iowa, garnering 26th, 28th, and 38th place laurels. For next sea- son Coach Massa envisions the expansion of York ' s swimming program to include a separate women ' s team. Practice commenced with the beginning of March and remained indoors until a week past York ' s initial playing date. By mid-April the record of Coach Jaquet ' s baseball team was a discouraging six wins to five losses. The effects of lingering winter weather, how- ever, did not prevent the York nine from achieving a final 21-9 record. According to Coach Jaquet, the play of Rick Brenner highlighted the 1978 performance. Rick, a senior, established several new York College season records and ranked ninth in hitting in 1978 NCAA Division III statistics. The two day observance began with a Friday evening convocation, fea- turing speaker Alvin Toffler, author of Future Shock. Saturday ' s activities included a reception in the Col- lege ' s Special Collections and Rare Books Room and a seminar in the Life Sciences Theater. Here a York Collegi- ate Institute alumni panel, headed by Dr. Robert Terry, (professor at the college) discussed the comparisons of YCl and YCP. The seminar also included a slide presenta- tion The 1870 ' s vs. the 1970 ' s prepared and narrated by Professor Carl Hatch. The Reverend Mr. Andrews York College of Pennsylvania ' s first permanent memo- rial to its educational heritage was dedicated October 15, 1977. The statue of the Reverend John Andrews was sculpted by Zoel Burickson, YCP ' S sculptor in residence. The bronze bust donated by Mr. Burickson and the des- cendants of the Rev. Mr. Andrews, rests on a Vermont granite base contributed by Trustee Ray S. Noonan. In the 1770 ' s, the Rev. Mr. Andrews founded a small, classical school, thus forming a foundation for an educa- tional expertise which continued with the York County Academy, the York Collegiate Institute, the York Junior College, and finally York College of Pennsylvania. Many of Andrews ' descendants were present for the unveiling ceremony, which brought this year ' s Founder ' s Day Observance to a memorable close. Absentees John L. Atkins, M.D. H. Our goal was to utilize all available resources in order to create a book that students at York Col- lege would appreciate — one whose pages would reflect York College at its usual very best. We hope that we have succeeded. The staff would like to thank everyone who assisted us in our efforts — especially our advisor Mr. Frank Mussano and his assist- ant Cathy Velez; Mr. Ed Patrick, Taylor Rep- resentative; Multiples Studios; the Student Senate; Bob Funk of Robert ' s Studio; Gary Kolczynski, Business Manager; our adver- tisers; and a special thanks to our technical advisor — Mr. Dennis Zercher.
