Y. presents THE T953 SHAFT X-. rs Y , f w 4 5 'l .- ... FOREWORD It is june, 1953, and another graduating class is preparing to leave the protective folds of our beloved school, York Central. Soon each graduate will own a newly-framed diploma and the tassel from a graduating cap, the tokens of twelve wonderful years in which we have been almost unbelievably happy- During these eventful years we have matured from meek and frightened first graders fwith pigtails, missing teeth, and all the other trimmingsj to more grown-up, self-sure individuals who have profitted by our mistakes and experiences. We'll always remember with pride the assembly programs that we participated in, the day we left grade school to enter jr. High, our Freshman initiation, our junior Prom fMay 9th was that eventful datel, Seventeenth Summer -our Senior Play, our Senior Trip, and graduation-the crowning event of our years of happy industry. We'll always remember with special tenderness the lasting friendships we've made-not only with our fellow-students, but with our principal-Mr. llilfiker, the members of our faculty and our advisors who have so expertly guided and trained us during our joyous stay at York. We'll always remember with heartfelt pride the neat red brick building that has been host to our scholastic achievements, musical activities, athletic contests, and money- raising projects. We are proud of our school and proud that we have been a part of it. To show our un- faltering pride in York Central, we present to you-the Shaft of '53, HONOR Anthony Lanton rn makmg our class affatrs successful, for F or all your support all your help xn makmg each school day run smoothly, for all your efforts nn makxng our years ID hrgh school happy and unforget table, and for bexng not merely a teacher, but a frlend at all times, we are happy to dedxcate the Shaft of 53 to you, Mr Larlton, l GRADUATES of 1953 ur four year stay ln hlgh schoo VALEDICTORIAN JOYCE MORRISON B nd 1 2 3 4 Cheerleaderl 7 3 4 Fdxtor of Kroy 4 Honor Soclety 4 Prom Orchestra Comm 3 3 r Intramurals l 2 3 4 Senlor Pl y D Cast 4 Nhxed Chorus 1 ance Nlusxc Festnal 1 2, 3 4 Sectxonal All State 3 Music Contest l 2 3 4 Oratoncal Contest 4 SALUTATORIAN JOALNE BURDFTT Chorusl 2 3 Oratorlcal Contest Cheerleaderl 2 3 Kroy Staffl 2 3 Ixauonal Honor SOClEIy 3 3 ,,.t- ww 1. , ' u 9 91 - . . l a .7 1 ! 9 1 'TI r! 3 .1 . STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is an extremely important organization in the activities of York Central School. This organization consists of one representative of each homeroom from grades seven to twelve and one representative from each extracurricular activities group These representatives are very wisely advised by our principal, Mr. llilfiker The reason that the Student Council is so important is that it is a true representation of each individual in these grades. This means that if any one student wishes something considered, he has a right to take his problem to his representative and that problem is brought before the Student Council. There it is discussed and considered and the rule of the majority makes the decision. The Student Council is a democratic form of government in the school system. By having a Student Council each individual has a voice in the way his school functions are run In choosing a president for this organization, the students vote for their choice after having witnessed the platform or views of the candidate The candidate obtaining the majority vote becomes the president for the coming year last year the York Central School students were very fortunate in being able to vote on a real voting machine Therefore, the Student Council is an organization of the students, by the students and for the students. Our record of three won and three lost tells only part of the story. 'lihe real story lies in the fighting spirit, the ability to rebound after defeat, the willingness to play the game in all its phases, neither asking for nor accepting any quarter. Our Golden Knights, under Co-Captains Arch Maclntyre and Larry Futter, demonstrated their ability to lead the team unto victory without faltering, as they met defeat, to earn for York Central the most successful season it has enioyed since football was resumed five years ago. We are proud of you boys and your Coaches and know that next year C10-Captains elect Francis Pascuzzo and Bruce Donnnn will lead their '55 edition of the Golden Knights foot- ball team to honor and fame for YCS.
