The Fighting Irish opened its season by falling 6-O to a strong Reading team after a surprising display of potential teamwork. York Catholic under great odds showed a need for ball handling which was greatly improved upon in the following games. The alertness of our team checked many Reading drives. The newly spirited Irish met the powerful and experienced MiJri1r'lou'n team with great courage, by holding them to 3 touchdowns all throughout the game. Our final score in the last quarter showed our never-ending courage and proficiency in ball handling. Statistically there was no resemblance to the 27-6 score boasted by the big Harrisburg Catholic team. Bad breaks proved to destroy the Green and Gold chances of scoring. But not even a powerful team like the Crusaders could stop the spirited Fighting Irish from scoring early in the last quarter, resulting, however, in final loss. York Catholic could be proud of their defensive stability staged against the Thunder Bolts of Littlestown. The under- manned Fighting Irish halted three powerful drives at the 8-yard line, 4-yard line, and the one-foot line. Late in the final period the Bolts scampered through the Irish brick wall for the only score of the game. Retaining their brilliant defensive game staged against Littlestown, the Fighting Irish managed to muster an offensive game to defeat the Kennardale Rams. York Catholic utilized a hard running attack to produce its victory. W'hile knock- ing on the Rams' door the final whistle blew to end the con- test,21-l3, York Catholic, the victors. A stunning display of football fireworks annihilated the Bull Dogs 33-14. Trouncing the favorite rivals was .1 reward and sat- isfaction for the hard practicing, and the sacrifice shared by all the team. Iirst was our favorite foe, Ilrlwle, which showed little resistance as we ended the contest S9-Sl. The successful Irish, headed by coach ,Iohn Sinkovitz, overwhelmed Sf. 1fil1rf1i'il',s of Sfhllllllkill, 74-il. The York live showed no mercy in trouncing the newcomer to the league, IMZYLIIIIIII, by a score of 74-48. The Green and Gold hiked to Tracy llall and put down the Cru- xatferx of IItIlAl'f,Nl7lll'4Q. The hard fought battle ended in favor of the Irish, SS-S3. Undefeated in league compe- tition, the Yorkers clinched the hrst half title by beating Lar1f'ux1i'r on their own floor 72-61. After a successful first half, the lighting Irish scored 20 consecutive points in the hrst quarter while mauling Delom' 72-53. The Sinkovitz men headed to l.!'!ItlIl07I where they had trouble squeezing out a 41-39 victory in overtime on the small Lebanon court. The Green and Gold waited for the traveling I1cIl'VfXf71ll'tQ C7'IlSt1t1t'l'S with great enthusiasm, hut a late start in the game proved fatal as they were edged 36-37, after being twelve points behind. The Irish snapped back and defeated a scrappy Lancaster team 69-64 on the York floor. The absence of our varsity coach and n key player took its toll on the small Slhllllflkjll court. Despite a twenty-point lead by Shamokin in the hnal quarter, York fought back within four points but fell short as the whistle blew at 65-69. The Lighting Irish had ith for the season but reluctantly bowed from the 1956-S7 cage scene by losing to Harrisburg Catholic, S3-49, in the play-off for Ct'1Ifl'lI1 Perm Calfaufit' LHIRQIIL' honors at Carlisle. 19 5 6-5 7 Varsity Record Won or Y.C.
