' xiii ForeWOI'd The ultimate end of education is the acquisition of freedom i internal and spiritual, to be achieved by the individual, his libera- tion through kinowledge, wisdom, good will and love. Freedom, ,as we have been taught throughout our entire course. is not the 'power to do as one pleases, rather the power to choose thc good things which will bring one to Cod. If the Son sets you free, you shall be free indeedf' This noble concept of freedom aequaints us with the purpose ofiliving, without which purpose, life is meaningless. rliherefore, every act of ours, be it prayer, study, or recreation, becomes by the 'grace of Christ, a step toward our final goal, God. , The pages of this book, our 1955 Rosa Mystiea, tell the story ' of our high school life lived in the spirit of such freedom, guided by the Church which holds true freedom 'as an infallible doctrine: . safeguarded by a Country which came into being because it believed it should be free and independent, encouraged by a City which 5 recognizes its obligation to offer equal opportunity to all. Her topic was Public Enemy No. 1 tblaterialisml Harrisburg Diocesan Forensic Contest In 1945 our Most Reverend Bishop George L. Leech inaugurated the Harrisburg Diocesan Forensic Contest. He stated, The aim of our Diocesan Forensic League is to help supply one of America's most pressing needs-the preparation of our youth for an enlightened, articulate exercise of their precious citizenship. York Catholic has always entered whole-heartedly into.this extra-curricular activity, and with very few exceptions, has been fortunate in having a representative in the Diocesan Finals. In 1913 VICTORIA FABIE, now Sister Marise, S.M., first brought honors to her Alma Mater by receiving SECOND HONORS in the Diocesan Finals that were held at York Catholic High School that year. York Catholic proudly boasts of being the FIRST SCHOOL in the Diocese to retain permanent possession of the coveted 'Ltraveling trophy. In 1911-9 PAUL PFEIFFER started the ball rolling by bringing the trophy back from Lebanon Catholic by his stirring defense of the cerebral palsy entitled FORGOTTEN CHILDREN. The following year NORMAN COULSON by his stimulating CHRISTOPHER,S CHALLENGES again won the cherished trophy for York Catholic. During the Marian Year of 1954, THOMAS MANGAN clinched his Alma Mater's chances of retaining permanent possession by his thought-provoking denunciation of Teenicide, I DIDN'T MEAN IT. The Catholic Forum of York for the last four years has endeavored to stimulate interest in this worthwhile activity. Not only do they sponsor the school eliminations but they also offer two prizes of 350.00 and 525.00 Government Bonds to the students who come out in first and second places. The recipients of these prizes have been: 1952-I irsl.' james Holtzcrg Second: Ann Moriarty 1953-First: James Holtzerg Second: Thomas Mangan 19591-First: Thomas Mangang Second: Leona Frantz 1955-First: Leona Frantz, Second: August Hartinger PARTICIPANTS IN THE HIRRISBURG DIOCESAN FOREIVSIC CONTEST-First Row: LaVerne Banks, NICHOLAS WAGNER, VIRGINIA BORSELLINO, Charles Monaghan, Rita Smith, Robert Altland.
