If 'N K U xv. 1' XS-E! MR. C. POWELL TOWNSEND T, Xa X1 Six happy years at the Yonkers High School have caused me to feel deep respect for this or- ganization and great admiration for those loyal and capable teachers who have carried on with such devotion and so effectively through the years. The contribution of our school to the life of this community has indeed been large. The alumni who have preceded you were splendid ambassadors of good will as they went on to institutions of higher learning or into the work of the world. To you who are about to leave and to others who will be with us one or two more short years, fond memories and good cheer. May the years bring you courage and happi- ness and an inner satisfaction that derives from unselfish service to one's fellow men. , - As the tempo of life in this age of Moon Shots and ballistic missiles accelerates at a breathtaking pace it becomes increasingly easy to lose the per- sonal traits that each of us must have if we are to live happily. Warmth, kindness, sympathy, charity and a sense of humor cannot be taught or bought. They can only be developed by contact with persons in whom these traits are manifest. I earnestly hope that in addition to the educa- tion you have received at Yonkers High School, you have had the opportunity to develop and foster those personality traits that will make your life a happy one. .zxgf Q. Twenty students request solid geometry the second term to halt subscription CLASS HISTORY Juniors were inducted into the National Honor Society to carry over its program of character, leadership, service and scholarship to their Senior Year. The Second Annual Junior Prom was held at the J.C.C. All attending will remember that night as a high spot of the school year. As a service to the incoming Sophs, Senior members of the G.O. pub- lished the attractive Y.H.S. handbook. Terry brought honor to Y.H.S. by winning the Y.H.S. citizenship award. Marie, Irwin and Joel took advan- tage of the college credit course given at N.Y.U. for high school Seniors while Mr. Vellozzi taught college math to qualified Seniors. Members of the Football team selected Lesley as their queen, attended by Betty and Janet, to reign over the Bulldog Bounce and the Float Parade. Senior girls brought a bit of Greenwich Village to Yonkers High one day in De- cember by wearing the current Bohemian styles. Preceding winter recess, the last assembly of the school year was held with many civic dignitaries in attendance to break ground for the renovation program at Y.H.S. Re- viving an old tradition at Y.H.S., the G.O. sponsored the first annual variety show in four years, under the guidance of Reba, Terry and Jerry. Held at the J.C.C., the show proved to be a smashing success. Many Seniors' minds were eased as early college acceptances came in. The spring of the year was highlighted by the crowning of Miss Y.H.S. The fruition of three years of effort and good times finally arrived on June 23rd, when some 280 proud Seniors were graduated from Yonkers High. The last function attended by the class of '59 as an integral part of Y.H.S. was the annual Senior Prom held at the Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club where fond reminiscences and promises of future meetings were exchanged. In retrospect, the members of the Senior class wish to express their gratitude to those of the faculty, who have given of themselves unselfishly to make us the leaders of tomorrow. The key to this success may be attributed to the smooth and efficient workings of the Junior Council, its advisory board and officers. This year's projects were numerous and quite suc- cessful. The Junior Class sponsored the winning float, La Guillotine, in the Thanksgiving rally. Sweetheart Swing, title of the Junior dance, captured the spirit of Valentine's Day with a suitable motif. Shining new Junior buttons were initiated this year. The Junior newspaper and the Scrapbook displayed some of the literary talent of the Junior Class. The highlight of the year was the gala Junior Prom. June came, and with it the Junior outing, leaving the Class of 1960 with many wonderful memories. JUNIOR OFFICERS President ., . .... Comprised of girls devoted to charity and welfare, their annual pre-Thanksgiving canned food drive brings true holiday atmosphere to needy Yonkers families. The league sends cheery cards to all students who are ill for more than a week. The morale of many patients in local hospitals is lifted by entertainment of volunteer groups and articles hand made by the girls. The club is capably led by its olticersz Frances Shiff, President, Ann Allister, Vice- President, Jane Weinstein, Recording Secretary, Carol Carmasin, Corresponding Secre- tary, Gail Pollack, Treasurer and Olivia Pierorazio, Publicity Chairman. l Q -,,w. P.T.A. REPRESENTATIVE This year's Parent Teacher Association has once again proven itself a very worth- while organization. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Thorne, the student representatives aided in a very successful membership drive. Throughout the year the students helped the P.T.A. with the distribution of circulars and sale of Card Party tickets. They successfully formed an excellent link between their parents and the faculty. GUIDANCE STAFF The Guidance Stott is a group of fifteen junior and senior girls who have generously volunteered their time to undertake menial office tasks in order that the counselors have more free time to work directly with the students. By serving as messengers and filing, they make the guidance department a more proficient service to the school. Wawmmw-apvw-an ,s.,.M,,,,,l,.,,s,,Q.....,,, it DRAMATIC CLUB The Dramatic Club has long been one of the most outstanding clubs in Yonkers High School. With only two returning starters in Captain Ralph DeMaio and Kevin Duffy, the young team gave a good account of itself in W.l.A.A. and Yonkers City League competition. The starting team consisted of Ed Wissner at quarterback, breakaway threats Frank Cruz and Jerry Mussen- den at haltback, and Ralph DeMaio at fullback. At the end slots were Doc Dougherty and Larry Messlerf Miles Markowitz and Lou Fariello tacklesp Kevin Duffy and Bill Gentile, guards: and Pete Bradley at center FOOTBALL rounding out the line. Also seeing much action on the line were Richie Damiano, Bob Paragan, and John Bo- han. The defensive backfield consisted of Stan Licovitch, Bob Gianotti, Jerry Mariani, and Joe Pietrzak. The boys were handicapped for a good part of the season by the injuries to Pete Bradley and Miles Markowitz, but they gave their all in every game and they gained experience and con- fidence with each ensuing game. First team All-City honors went to Lou Fari- ello and Kevin Duffy, while Larry Messler and Ralph DeMaio were chosen for the second team. , 'fx -K 2?- '-I f Y 44,4-5, 5 N XF? . .,'.r1,.'qa.sifs-3.'- N -. -' ' , -. - N 1'ff--wifes'-v 1 . -, , . g-' . , ..A j .A':.jl,, J, ,C Agn , V. 4 ,- - u-wry. - 5, gb. , ,Md-Aug? The squad consisted of only twenty-two boys, all of whom played inspired football. In playing for the J.V., the boys gained valuable experience which will help Coach Beck in forming next year's Varsity. Quarterback Fred Connely ran plays that sent halfbacks Adelino Guerra and Pat Goier and full- back Pete Tocco for long gains. The able line consisting of Bob Gaydosh, Joe Havranek, John Wilson, Charlie Saulsberry, Steve Ruyack, Vic Loperfido and John Reilly, showed an outstanding quality on defense, which made them a hard-charging unit that was hard to stop.
