In 1921 the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools was fotmded by the National Association of Secon- dary School Principals. Today there are over five thousand local chapters of the National Honor Society through- out the United States. The emblem of this society is the keystone and the flaming torch bearing the letters C, S, L, and S, which stand for Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. junior and Senior Students, who have spent at least one semester in a particular high school and who have a scholarship average of 8596 or its equivalent, are eligible to become members of the National Honor Society if they meet the qualities of Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service.
