May 2, ended a very successful year for the Yoakum High School Debate Club, which also includes the ex- temporaneous speakers, Barbara Mayrant and jim McWilliams. The first debate toumament was at Bellaire, near Houston. The first string debators, Charlotte Welhauscn and Robbie Walters, won four out of five debates over various Oklahoma and Houston teams. The girls were also invited to take part in a demonstration debate with a San Marcos boy's team at S.W.T.S.T.C. in October. The second toumament was held at the Alice High School in Alice, Texas. Here the girls won the Alice Debate Trophy by winning seven out of seven debates. Each of the Yoakum boy's team won one debate. In the Baylor toumament at Baylor University the girl's team went to the quarter-finals bcforc losing to Muskogee, Oklahoma, who were national champions last year. In Fort Worth, at the T.C.U. toumament, the girl's team won three out of five, and the boy's team, Earl Matthew and Sandy White, won one. Both girl's and boy's teams passed through the District Meet to go on to Regional Meet at San Marcos. The boy's team lost to Kenedy at Regional but the girls won both rounds and went to the State Meet in Austin on May second and third, The extemporaneous speakers, Barbara Mayrant and jim McWilliams, had a very successful year. Both won in District meet over Schulenburg. jim McWilliams placed second in the Regional Meet, Barbara Mayrant placed first in Regional and went on to the State Meet. We are sorry that more students from Yoakum High School were not able to go to the State Meet but the Debate Club is proud that the three people who did go were all from the ranks of the Debate Club.
