The National Honor Society of Secondary Schools was founded by the National Association of Secondary School Principals in 1921. Now there are over five thousand local chapters of the National Honor Society throughout the United States. The emblem of this society is the keystone and the flaming torch, bearing the letters C, S, L, and S, which stand for Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. The torch represents the searching light of truth. Members of the Junior or Senior class, who have spent at least one semester at a parti- cular high school and who have a scholarship average of 857: or its equivalent, are eligible to become members of the National Honor Society if they meet the qualities of Character, Scholar- ship, Leadership, and Service.
