When a thing is originated or practiced without regard to utility such as painting architecture dramatic arts and sculp turing we have what was originally conceived as fine arts Many of the old masters were men and women who plied their arts for the mere pleasure which came from their efforts. The strenuous economic life of our age has made quite a difference in the original definition of fine arts. The work ofthe masters of today certainly regards utility as a motivating force of creation, and the fields of endeavor in the practice of fine arts have been widened to include all those who love their work so well that more lucrative positions in other fields do not attract them. The artist who paints and considers the sale of his master- piece only as an afterthought, the actress who starves in New York while trying to give expression to her inner thoughts, the school teacher who gives her all to her students, the lawyer who gives his best to the cause of his client, the doctor who breaks his health to bring health to others, and the farmer who plows, plants and prays are all examples of the fine arts being practiced in these modern times.
