■P !r MHK .... ' .rii : -6.. ? This year ' s M ASM ID embodies for many of us the final real connection between ourselves and Yeshiva College as we enroll in graduate schools or venture into the professional world. Yet, as we sigh our relief, there remains behind a large, dedicated body of faculty and administrative personnel who have chosen to devote their lives and energies to this college, our alma mater. In salute to those stalwarts of Yeshiva, MASMID ' 88 is dedicated to two of the most solid pillars of this instituti on: Rabbi Israel Miller and Rabbi Manfred Fulda. vv ' , Rabbi Miller, Senior Vice President of Yeshiva University, is this year celebrating the 50th anniversary of his graduation from Yeshiva College and a lifetime of dedication to the University and its students since then. He is an outstanding figure in the college and in the greater Jewish community. Rabbi Fulda, Senior Rebbe in JSS, graduated from the University 36 years ago and has since inspired countless students to achieve great heights in all of their endeavors. It is no coincidence that he has an unparalleled following among his Talmidim as well as the Jewish community at large. It is at such a time when many are thinking what Yeshiva University can do for us that we may ponder how these men instead found what they could do for Yeshiva University. 00 1 CD O I s - CM i- t- Osl O) G t- CN CO oo £ 3 ,o v. Your alma mater will miss you, and await your return as active and committed alumni. You take your leave in the Hebrew year 5748, the last three numerals of which are written as tismach , be happy. what a happy omen, and what good advice! Maimonides teaches us that there is a difference between simchah and hoi lelut , authentic happiness and spurious happiness — just rowdiness and buffoonery. My wishes for each and every one of you is that you achieve the tismach , that your lives be blessed by genuine simchah : of the heart and the mind, in plenty and in comfort, allowing you not only to build wonderful Jewish families and fine careers in the professions and business, but also to remember that the core of joy is: Talmud Torah . Remain connected to that fountain of eternal wisdom, and your lives will be genuinely happy! Mr| YB8HIV A UM IVBll At the 15:25 mark of the first half of the second to last game of the season. Lior Hod swished a baseline jumper over two Vassar defenders to break Harvey Scheff s Y.U. career scoring record of 1 500 points. The packed MSAC crowd went bonkers, giving Lior a five-minute standing ovation as he hugged everyone in sight. But while it was certainly the most exciting moment of the season, Lior ' s record-breaking shot was only one of the milestones reached during the course of the season. Coach Halpert won his 100th game, the MACs played their 1000th game. Ayal Hod scored his 1000th point, and yes, it did seem as though there were 1000 MACs ' fans on hand as the team made its first-ever post-season tournament ap- pearance. But regardless of the tournament, when one looks back over the course of the season, one sees what a difference one year makes. Coaches Halpert and Gurock showed what they could do with one more year of experience (multiplied by seven) as the MACs not only improved on last year ' s 10-14 record, but finished the regular season with a 16-8 record, tying the team mark for victories in a season. Each non-starting senior was a role player who knew his place in Coach Halpert ' s offense. Donny Furer, a second-year player, was the defensive catalyst and the inspiration for the NCAA ' s change on the fly rule. Hesh Muehlgay played just one year on the team and had the best points minutes played in team history. Marty Shlakman provided the MACs with stability. He created the airborn defense and, importantly, was the team ' s backup inbounder. Zev Weiss was the bravest Maccabee as he often resembled a pitch-o-matic during practice. It got to the point where he would go anyplace to avoid practice, including London where he stayed for four months. For two years the starting center was Benjy Reichel, whose bulk and height made him a top rebounder and a scoring threat near the basket. It also made him the team ' s inbounder after a basket, causing a number of hairy moments. Jeff Baum, the starting point guard, was sometimes unsure of his role on the team. But controlling the ball and hawking the ball on defense are two things that come naturally to Jeff, whose steals, length-of-the- court layups, occasional outside shot, and love of the game made him one of the most popular MACs. And what else could be said of Lior? A true competitor, he was the backbone of the MACs over the past two years as he finished his four year Y.U. career with 1 545 points, and was amongst the leaders in career assists and blocked shots. Whether jump-shooting or dunking, Lior added style to the MACs offense and made Y.U. Basketball the excitement that it is. Player G FGA % FTM FTA A. Hod 25 173 266 65 147 218 L. Tennis team seemed to be facing a rebuilding year when it assembled at the Bingham- ton Racquet Club in September. How- ever, under the tutelage of first year coach, Mickey Aboff, the young MICS rallied behind the leadership of Senior captains Jon Bandler and Robbie Wind and posted a 7-2 record which included a stunning victory over Division II Brooklyn College. The only blemishes on the team ' s re- cord occurred on cold, blustery days in Hoboken and Newark where I.A.C. ri- vals Stevens Tech and New Jersey In- stitute of Technology defeated the MICS in hard fought contests. The MICS finished in third place in the league with a 3-2 record. The team ' s exceptional play in sin- gles ' competition was most responsible for this year ' s strong record. Bandler ' s perfect 7-0 record won him a place on the I.A.C. All Star Team and raised his three-year Y.U. record to 12-4. Wind also had a winning record, and along with Bandler inspired great effort and concentration on the part of the other team members whose performance seemed more like that of seasoned veter- ans than the first year players they were. The team honored its coach and friend by changing its name from the Tennis MACS to the MICS, and also decided that the school ' s name as it ap- peared on the tennis schedule each year was not as exciting as those of oppo- nents. Therefore, beginning with the 1988-89 squad, the MICS will be rep- resenting Western Yeshiva State Insti- tute of Technology. 1987-88 Y.U. With a quantita- tively heavier and qualitatively tougher schedule than ever before, with an ap- preciated outpouring of home fan sup- port, and with our invited participation in the first annual National Division III Championship, fencing continues to en- joy its renaissance at Y.U. Under the professional coaching and able leader- ship of Head Coach Arnie Messing and Assistant Coach Pete Rosas, the team performed quite respectably and achieved a name in Division III fencing. Our grim, hardened, veteran fencers at- tacked with skilled abandon, dissolving all remnants of our pushover repu- tation of the past. Sabre weapon leader Dov Schwell ran his record to 48-50 overall and a fifth- place award in the post-season cham- pionship. He was helped by Nachum Goldberg ' s confuse ' em, then kill ' em philosophy. Ross Breen led the epee squad to its 36-63 record and a fifth- place tournament finish with his three undefeated matches and 20-13 record. Epee weapon leader Eric Zaiman, Lord of the Psych-Ups , left a smoldering trail of haka-taka cheers in every en- emy gym this side of the Mississippi. The foil squad topped the rest with its incredible 51-48 record and its fourth place finish in the tournament. Team captain, Zaiman Levine, bounced his way to a 23-9 seasonal record including four undefeated matches, and together with next year ' s captain, Robbie Zim- merman, and fellow senior, Zev Gold- blatt, led the foilmen to a dynamically agile year. 1987-88 Y.U.
