Welcome to the finished product. It is intended not only to chronicle the past four years of your lives, but to inspire giggles, chuckles, etc. . . . from your spouses and children in the future. We wanted this to be entertaining, so don ' t be sur- prised by what you may see. We have caught you in the MOST compromising posi- tions. Furthermore, we have drawn our material from those oddball lectures you will never forget, your hopes, dreams, and passions as eloquently expressed in the dor- mitory hallways, and from leading comical and political geniuses of our time. You will want to pull it out whenever you get the opportunity and display it proudly to everybody, just like you might do with your, oh, I don ' t know . . . diploma. Yeah, that ' s it! Isn ' t that special? Enjoy! Let us remember these unbelieveable years as some of the best in our lives. Your friends, David Finkelstein Steven Fried f ' 4 M J ht fA Every institution owes an incalculable debt to quiet, unassuming leaders with vision. Max Etra guaranteed the future of Yeshiva at a time when its very survival was in doubt. From 1953 to 1977, Mr. Etra served faithfully as chairman of the Board of Trustees of Yeshiva University. His generosity and dedication over the quarter century made possible the revitalization of Yeshiva that we have been privileged to witness and enjoy. On March 25, 1987, Max Etra was honored at the Student Centennial Celebration. He spoke with a fond intimacy, recalling the challenge and excitement of his years of leadership. The reminiscences he shared were colored with affection and pride. It is thus with affection and pride that we dedicate MASMID 1987 to the memory of Mr. Max J. Etra, alav hashaJom. May his example serve as in- spiration to us as we look to our future. In a world filled with modified truths and altered faith, we bear the responsibility of ensuring that traditional practice and modern living coalesce to form a vibrant, organic religious lifestyle. Our generation has been endowed with the miraculous restoration of Israel to Jewish h?inds. But the State ' s existence represents a challenge as well. Though mired in social, political and military crises, Israel offers the potential for revitalization of faith, from Brooklyn to Beersheva to Bialystok. Every Jew, whether imprisoned in Siberia or ensconced in the suburbs, may turn to Jerusalem as the locus of spirituality and the cradle of Mashiach. We can fulfill our destiny if we pursue our goals with energy tempered with sensitivity, dedicated to unifying all Jews under the banner of Torah. As a bastion of traditionalism in harmony with today ' s society, we remain loyal to our past in order to forge a brilliant future. Yeshiva University, office of fte president . . There are weird, eerie sounds in the background, like the sound of bats flying around and whining from black cats. And it ' s pouring outside. A really wild storm, with thunder and lightning. You start munching faster. And with that music and the shrieks in the background, and the storm, any idiot knows thai something is going to happen. On this night, jane McAllen, they always have names like that, ven- tures out. On a night like that, I would stay home. Anyway, she starts her car. By this time, I ' m almost choking on the popcorn, and the music is shrieking louder and louder. Something is going to happen, and soon. I can ' t take it anymore, so I yell, Jane, Idiot, go home. Turn the car around and go home. She just keeps driving. Then, her car breaks down. The whole cemetery is shrieking in the background by now. Bats are flying across the screen. I spilled my soda all over the chair. And from inside the car, you can see that the storm has gotten worst. Lightning keeps flashing across the windshield. I can see that she does not know what to do. So I pleaded with her, Jane, listen to me honey, don ' t move. I ' m coming to get you. By this time I had on my jacket and was searching for the car keys. Bang, bang, crash. The thunder and lightning sound like they are in the living room. 1 screamed, I ' m coming, I just need to find the keys. So what does she do? In her infinite wisdom, she opens the door and gets out of the car. I thought, Jane, Jane, Jane. I said I ' d come and get you. But you wouldn ' t listen. So she ' s walking along the road try- ing to duck lightning bolts. Her shoes are filled with water and go- ing squish, squish, squish. Cars are whizzing by. More squishing. Then, her car whizzes by. Jane, stop! Don ' t continue. Then, in the distance she spots a huge ugly mansion. Bats and things are fly- ing out the windows. The shrieks are coming from that direction. So she goes there ... for help. Jane is obviously an inordinately logical and intelligent person. My living room is a mess by now. The music whines louder and louder. Jane gets closer to the house. Squish, squish, squish. Lightning almost hits her. I peed on the floor. Jane gets closer to the house. There is a big watchdog on the porch waving at her saying, Go home. Over the winter traces, demolished, the glorious spring a citadel established. Its reign spreading worldwide, gave warmth to the domestic and the wild. Its flag of greens and flower in nations awakened the wish and desire to go to the fields, vegetating, to see its glorious triumph, exhilarating. For it did not only the winter defeat, it conquered also the hearts that beat. OUT OF MANY, ONE (for Yeshiva University ' s Centennial Year Commencement, 1987) Dr. Will Lee Was it ever easy? Dante imaged G-d as a point, a core of light Illuminating the cosmos from the inside out While rabbis illumined G-d ' s Torah Which word by word illumined the cosmos, Yet all souls were haunted by shadows of death. The music of concentric spheres. The perfect order of realms above the moon โ€” One G-d conducted that cosmic harmony, Yet mutable Renaissance man, Distracted by the tides of change, Could only catch a note here, A phrase there. Does it not seem harder now To juggle so many spheres. Some petty, others massive. Which center on what still point? The self? The world? The Torah? G-d? Too much to keep in balance, harmonize. Educated fragment by fragment. We hardly seem to recognize our own urge To integrate our aspects into selves. Can each of us fall any further apart? Can any center hold? Disparate disciplines, text upon text Upon text, overarched By the freedom to specialize. By the search for truths, no matter how many. True-hearted action Frittered away in errands Forgetful of faith. Making a living Through some careening career Or other. Texts upon texts Whose values compete among themselves, Let alone with knowledge, actions, skills. For G-d ' s sake who are we? What are we doing? What do we stand for? The lone and level sands Stretch out toward silence. With self-fulfillment banished, The learning, the action Is whose? The world neglected, Who can live? Or wants to? With whom? The Torah furled. Who knows how to live, Or why? G-d forgotten, What gives rise to meaning? Being? Perhaps we underestimate what freedom โ€” More than mere acceptance of necessity โ€” Can choose to stand for. Perhaps, while keeping our eyes on actual truths. We can still choose to balance Self and other, sympathy and justice, The worthy action driven by self-confidence While mindful of the will of G-d. Perhaps from seeming fragments, Objects, tools, Reading, learning. The art of experience. Pulling its pieces together, While turning itself inside out. The Torah Mada being can commence Its own slow work of art: Can see the world in grains of sand; Can melt, can fuse its fragments; Can shape a vessel To buoy its own soul; Can sculpt its world In the image of G-d. Your period of preparation for adulthood โ€” especially the nearly two decades of general education โ€” is officially over. If, however, you look back and try to make sense of the last phase of this apprenticeship, the phase known as college, you will probably be at sea. All those rapidly changing laws of science, all those often conflicting ver- sions of reality in the Humanities, all those unprovable theories in the Social Sciences โ€” what vision of life can they possibly add up to? Does, in short, a liberal arts education really make one wiser? Yes and no. If by wisdom is meant The Answer, col- lege can never give you that. But if wisdom is understood as the intelligent search for answers after one has been informed of the complexity of things by being offered, even overwhelmed by, the many questions in life, then college has made you wiser. Someone once safely said, Education if confusion. That is, you came to college stuffed with certitudes and platitudes that masqueraded as answers and now you know that you then did not, and still do not, know. That is wisdom, or at least the beginning of it. The best that higher education can do is to teach one how to think. Yeshiva College has therefore given you the tools for finding The Answer, or at least some answers. You can now use those tools, sharpen and oil them, add to them. Or you can, as unfortunately too many do, just throw them into the toolshed to rust unused. The choice is yours. Manfred Weidhom Professor of English, YU LEGAL COUNSEL By Eli Clark I sat at the edge of my bed with my hands clasped under my chin. I don ' t know. Law school demands such a major commitment. Not just in terms of money โ€” although that ' s certainly a factor โ€” but law school will cost me three years of my life. What right have I to sequester myself in law libraries for so long while the rest of the world spins furiously along? every day brings escalating tensions, new crises and turmoil. There is so much to be done, so much I feel I can contribute. What sort of alibi would I have with, ' I ' ve been busy in law school ' ? John jumped excitedly to his feet. Your problem is that you regard law school as an escape, a cop-out. Consider instead that a law education can prepare you to assume greater responsibility, to effect greater change. It doesn ' t matter whether you actually become an attorney or not, your abilities and skills will be honed and refined in law school; they ' ll carry you to heights you never dreamed of. Look at me โ€” when I graduated from law school, I hadn ' t an inkling that I would eventually become White House Chief of Staff. You know, I think you ' re right. God, I ' ve learned so much from you, Mr. Ehriichman. I feel lucky to have been your cellmate. Join the Circus, Sonny. FOUR YEARS AGO, YOU PROBABLY NEVER HEARD OF: You look Mahvelous.
