I « W ff ' W 1 i H m ' P |7j ' J I am proud lo be a Jew! . . . Why? . . . Well, because of all Ihe reasons thai I have learnt in school. That ' s why!! How do I know that I am proud? Because 1 just am . . . ofcourse 1 am ... 1 mean I marched in the parade!! The first very warm day of spring. Li ghtweight jackets flung over shoulders or carefully draped over one arm. Pressing lo the curb to catch sight of the parade. And what is a parade but people ' . ' Jews, young and old, out on this sunny afternoon lo take part in a special event, marching down the broad avenues of New YorkCiy with banners, floats, and flags. The entire area of the parade is filled with youth, carefree — soon to be adults — untouched by the travails of life. They mill about with the energy characteristic of their kind, each pursuing his immediate future with a gay and carefree vigor. No thought is more dear to them than the pleasures of an immediate future. My thoughts swing suddenly back to the marchers. I notice now the lack of luster, blatant only in comparison to the youth. They march, chanting slogans, and bearing banners identifying their groups, as if they ' re fulfilling an obligation, continuing only to claim credit before dispersing. It seems strange that the warm sunnincssof the day does not invigorate them, but this, as well as the youth love of life is not the kind that will inject determination into a people comfortable with placidity. Can we who do not know pain and oppression muster the depth of feeling to actually rage at an unseen, unrealized enemy? Is Judaism precious lo me? . . . Am I proud? . . . How do I know? . . . Whoever tested me? , . . No sooner does this unanswered wail fade from my consciousness than another comes to mind. Natan Scharansky walked slowly across the bridge. The sun was not strong and he was alone, but the pride in a man ' s eyes and bearing is unmistakable. 1 will not bcmoon my placidity and remain abject. 1 will make this man ' s pain mine and with this, his pride will become mine. His strength will be mine, and in my eyes and in my bearing his pride will be reflected. And reflected indeed because I can not bear it to remain within me. For this must be the promise and future of my generation. I will know that I am proud JULES POLONETSKY Class of 1986 Listen closely to a story that began so long ago of a small but steadfast nation overcoming every foe. Our history tells stories of great heroes rising, oh so strong, standing up for just beliefs even though others thought that they were wrong. Now it ' s time to rise up and proclaim I am proud to be a Jew. Committing yourself to yiddishkeit is the only thing to do. So grasp the belief that Hashem is one. Work for Torah ' s goals. And as the time continues, you ' ll find peace within your souls. Ani Ma ' amin, I believe, that the day will surely come when all Jews will be united standing tall and proud as one. Ani Ma ' amin, I believe, that the day will surely come when the Moshiach will arrive and the world will be at peace AGAIN!! Now it ' s time to rise up and proclaim I am proud to be a Jew, Committing yourself to yiddishkeit is the only thing to do. So grasp the belief that Hashem is one. Work for Torah ' s goals. And as the time continues, you ' ll find peace within your souls. RUACH The world looked on with uncertainty as the Russian man crossed the Glienicke Bridge to freedom. Who is this enigmatic personality who was the subject of countless cries for freedom during the 9 years of his imprisonment? As his unique personality became known, the uncertainty was transformed into awe. Courageous Anatoly (Natan) Scharansky ' s remarkable determination enabled him to become strengthened, not weakened, in the face of adversity. He became for us, the personification of the triumph of good over evil. Yet in our moment of victory let us not forget Yosef Begun and other Soviet Jews who must endure the oppressive regime that is the Soviet Union. He languishes in a Soviet labor camp sentenced in November 1 982 to 12 years for anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda. Begun, like Scharansky, suffers only because he is a jew. Be it resolved that we will not relax our vigilance in protest against the humanitarian atrocities being committed against Soviet Jews. We, the Class of 1 986, dedicate our yearbook to these two men whose courage and dignity in defending their honor and the honor of all Jews, inspires us to stand firmly committed to our principles and to fight for what we believe is just. Yeshi va Uni versit y o c of the president TO THE YESHIVA COLLEGE CLASS OF 1986 Your class is one of special distinction: You are the last graduating class from Yeshiva College of the first century of Yeshiva University ' s existence. While this fact will have little impact on your individual careers and lives, it does mean much to your alma mater as an institution. It is the opportunity for us — all of us, including you — to look back upon the past with a sense of pride and accomplishment. Despite all the jeremiads about a vanishing Orthodoxy, and despite all the premature obituaries for the philosophy of Torah Umadda, we have now graduated an excellent class of fine representatives of what we stand for. At the same time, this places upon you — and all of us — a special responsibility not to be oblivious to our faults, not to take anything for granted, and to bend every energy and effort to see to it that the ideals of Torah Umadda are realized in our lives; that Torah prevails in the Jewish community; that Jews in America, Israel, Russia, and elsewhere throughout the world survive creatively and constructively. May each of you, in your individual professions and careers, join in this sacred task and bring pride and joy both to your families and to your alma mater. Cordially yours. NY 10033-3299 (21 2) 960-521 ' May 8, 1986 Dear Graduates: The successful completion of your studies at Yeshiva College is more than a personal achievement. It reflects the commitment you share with more than a half-century of alumni to the unique educational mission of Yeshiva University. This commitment has required an enormous investment of your time and energy. You have pursued a rigorous dual-program of study which hs= challenged you to integ- rate your Torah studies with what is best in Western culture . This challenge is a persistent one and your success in meeting it will be reflected in your lives and careers. You are fortunate in having as models thousands of graduates who have demonstrated that this challenge can be met successfully and that the mission of Yeshiva University retains its freshness and vitality. I note that during your years here, your class has already given promise of outstanding potential as bearers of the standard of Torah u ' Madda . As you leave Yeshiva College, I congratulate yo wish you success, and I remind you that you are models for future Yeshiva College men. Dear Class of 1986: As you flnish reading MASMID ' 86, we hope you have enjoyed reliving your college days at YU. The previous pages are filled with our memories of good times and hard times, personal growth, and friendships. These memories are ours. No one can take them away from us. We have endeavored to encompass all the most noteworthy points of our college experience. They are ours to keep, to share, to have for ever. It is unfortunate that the position of MASMID 86 editor went unclaimed. We assumed the position of editors to maintain the tradition of Yeshiva College ' s official yearbook publication. It was important enough for us to devote our time and energy not only for ourselves but, believe it or not, for you our fellow graduates. Thank you for sup- porting us in our efforts to put out this edition of MASMID 86 in the span of 3 weeks. You helped make an unfor- tunately almost impossible situation bearable. Now that we go our separate ways, we, the editors of MASMID 86, wish you all the best and we hope that anything you dream will become reality.
