' I ' licre are those tliat choose to attend after graduating from liigli school, and another contingent t)iat opts for a year in Yeshiva in Israel. Wlien a freshman enters Yeshiva lie steps into a new world replete with its own language. Suddenly words ' such as elective, requirement, easy A, and grubbing become an integral part of his speech. The freshman faces a .serious dilemma. There are various facets of college life that he must necessarily balance. Due to the rigors of the double program, he must budget time for as many as ten t ourses. Yet the television, telephone, and radio loo ' k in- creasingly more inviting than his intro Bio or Eco text. If lie is to succeed in college he will have to learn to occa- .sionally lock his door and take the telephone off the hook. The freshman year is not totally depressing. By the time finals roll around he will probably be amongst a group of friends planning to spend their first grub shabbos together (after the weekend, he does twice the amount of work to make tip for the wasted time spent talking about Florida or skiing during intersession). As the year progresses, he takes part in sonde extracur- ricular activities. Perhaps, a governing board member of Ommentator or Hamevaser has promised him a governing board position for nothing more than ten hours of typing during midterms. The freshman year is a time of enormous growth, and in most cases satisfaction. The Yeshiva freshman has more demanded of him than ever before; high school seems like a far away memory. By spring he has developed a good in- dex of his abilities and he knows what to expect from himself and Yeshiva. The Sophomore class grows to include the Israel returnees. The newcomers must learn the freshman vocabulary and terms such as: Israel credits evaluation, and Biblical Exegesis. The Sophomore year becomes the time to look back on the experience of the freshman year, .assess performances, and reevaluate goals (not for the last time). One feels obligated to commit one ' s self to a par- ticular major and career goal but is still hesitant to do so. However, by the end of the year, due to the constraints ;ind pressures of the system, one must compact the next two years of life so as to appropriately schedule Hebrew requirements, summer sciences, Accounting sequences and that ominous and still mysterious concept: Kaplan ' s. The Jr. year begins and another 150 students are allowed the pleasure of calling themselves upperclassmen. One is halfway finished; yet the worst is yet to come. In the lower classman years the student ' s vision does not seem to extend past 4 years of college. With the outset of the Jr. year, graduation and life after college are now visible on the horizon. Once again, the vocabulary changes. The new vocabulary has a distressing propensity for initials i.e. GMAT, MCAT, LSAT, DAT and the dreaded, hated E.T.S. The word percentile also takes an ominous meaning. Sometime during the Jr. year and early in the Sr. year, the ma- jority of Yeshiva students will begin a course at Kaplan ' s and look at those plastics with the owls on them with hatred and depression. In addition to keeping his grades up in school (knowing the Jr. year counts the most with an admissions board,) the student must now fully contend with the pressure that the graduate school entrance system puts on him. In the first two years, the student placed the pressure on himself. Now he feels it from outside, every time he grades himself at Kaplan ' s or reads a graduate school brochure. For the most fortunate, this pressure will only continue for another 6 to 8 months until the early winter of the session; for others, the pressure of the race will con- tinue into the spring and summer. Unfor- tunately, for some the pressure will be only alleviated with failure. Such is the rules, rewards and punishments of the climb to graduate school. Some time between April and October, Kaplan ' s will become a second home as one feels that they are perpetually wearing headphones. Some students will even learn to drive to Hacken- sack in their sleep. With the change in routine comes a parallel change in at- titude. The majority of students have decided on a chosen career. On desks in the dorm, the reading material changes. Along with the Sports Illustrated and People are now found the Wall St. Journal and Barron ' s Guide to Medical Schools. In- stead of Camp or Israel, plans change to taking sciences over the summer or finding a career related internship. By the end of the Jr. year most of the people in the Class of 1984 know what their goals are. Now they will find out if they can attain them. In the senior year the vocabulary has changed again. The new terms include clinical facilities, starting salary, Big 8 and Investment Banking. Again the routine changes; most of the senior class has a minimal course load, yet they are very busy. Pre Med and Pre Dent students await interviews or hope they get them. Those going to Business School write out their essays and polish their wing tips. Accounting students hope they get an offer during their call back. In December, Seniors begin calling home every night — not so much to talk to their parents as to find out if any important mail came. The most important college vocabulary word: Fall — ac- ceptance letter. There is a more pleasant side to the senior year. With less school work to be done, diver- sions develop. Intramural sports become a major activity, and road trips are a nightly event. When the snow begins to fall, ski trips and late night football become popular. At the end of the year not every student will be happy with his stay at Yeshiva. Many will have justifiable criticisms; but with college winding down to a conclusion, most students have developed a close set of friends that will re- main. Some people call it a chevra, others a clique. Regardless, these friendships are the most valuable thing college provides. The Organic Chemistry and Business law will be forgotten, but the love and friendship will remain. Ever since the publishing of George Orwell ' s 1984, the year 1984 has achieved a special mean- ing. It has come to symbolize a futuristic totalitarian state in which every vestige of Man ' s mind and spirit is destroyed. As 1S)83 drew to a close and 1984 ap- proached, newspapers and magazines printed numerous articles which discussed the accuracy of Orwell ' s predictions. Many people feel that our society is out of the reach of 1984. They point to our advanced social structure, and smugly smile about how wrong Orwell was. Perhaps a closer look is in order. In 1984, Orwell showed how a totalitarian scate can control all aspects of life, down to the individual ' s every thought. Newspeak, the of- ficial language of Oceania in 1984, was lesigned to limit creative thought and eliminate possible heresy or thought-crime. The en- tire philosophy of the society in 1984 could be expressed in one Newspeak word — doublethink. This concept explained that it was possible for a person to believe in an ob- vious contradiction, such as 2-t-2=5. War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength, is an example of the slogans used to condition the citi2ens of Oceania. Examples of this type of thinking are present in our society as well. As Russel Baker pointed out, the American war machine is run by a Defense Department. The deadly MX missile has been nicknamed The Peacekeeper by President Reagan. The communist government of East Germany calls itself the German Democratic Republic. The USSR, which also has the audacity to call itself a republic, is itself involved in totalitarian oppression of Jews and other minority groups . . . n We at Yeshiva have had the best of both worlds. Both a fine college curriculum and superior Judaic studies programs have been made available to us. This dual training, that of both Torah and Maddah, prime us for our dual purpose in the outside world. In addition, we have forged lasting bonds of friendship with our peers and teachers that will help us take the atmosphere of Yeshiva wherever we go. Orwell questioned democracy ' s ability to sur- vive in a technologically advanced environment, such as ours. Indeed the outlook seems bleak. WE as graduates of Yeshiva, must take the lessons we have learned here, the sense of pur- pose honed here, and the precious relationships begun here and use all of these to make a Kid- Jush Hashem in the world around us, and truly fulfill our role as Jews in our 1984 and beyond. vy I ' %r I ' 1 1 1 Freedom, In Two Dimensions Burned-out Bronx frozen gray Under a rusting sun, rising Early late in May. Breezes flutter, engines sputter, Black exhaust envelopes Working classes on ttie run. Clear skies trail ivory clouds, gray sfiadows disappear — Wonder I, is noon just past or is it yet to come. Boats of blue and gold are going Mowtiere under silver cables. Uptown, A green dome rises, hesitating. Unsure of its place in time. And as our last week begins, the sunlight Melts the last weak links. We are free now, like the green ivy Climbing past the open windows. Free to reach and take hold — yet Never beyond the one wall on which we first began. So long ago, so young. Questions lie awake at night A waiting answers not yet found. There they are! Written on the wall — But in a foreign tongue. ' ' Explain! ' ' we cry. The moon hangs high, Silent, no translation. A thousand suns will climb and fall Before we understand. Dr. Norman Schh one such individual who merits special recognition. The first encounter that students have with Dr. Schlessberg can be a hi. startling. In the classroom, he is powerful, dynamic, and above demanding. No amount of pre- class preparation seems to satisfy him. It is only after some time that students realize and appreciate the deep love kat Dr. Schlessberg harbors for Yeshiva University and its students. Rs Dr. Schlessberg single-handedly created the Accounting program at Yeshiva. Under his able leadership, the program is one of the fastest growing programs at Yeshiva. In addition, he personally coordinates the only on -campus recruiting program, a program with a 100 percent success rate to date. He is constantly running, phoning, and badgering until every one of his boys and girls has a job. In recognition of his dedication to each individual student at Yeshiva, and to the institution as a whole, the Senior class of 1984 dedicates this yearbook to Dr Norman Schlessberg. mm In Memoriam Throughout our years at Yeshiva University, we the students, have been blessed with many new additions. Among them are the Max Stern Athletic Center and the Sy Syms Marketing Chair. Unfortunately, ive have also been hit by many losses which no dona- tion from a philanthropist can replace. These losses are not financial ones but rather those of great human beings. Hoivever, each one of these persons has left us a great legacy for which he will be fondly remembered in our hearts. Rabbi Morris J. Besdin, z ' tl, directed the fames Striar School of General fewish Studies for twenty-five years. That number itself is quite impressive but Rab- bi Besdin accomplished a far greater amount than just the accumulation of statistical data. Rabbi Besdin not only formulated high academic standards in developing his JSS program, but also felt personally responsMe for each and every student, thus combining two often con- trary characteristics in his job as mentor. Soft-spoken in manner, his personality created a popularity unparalleled among students, alumni, and colleagues throughout the University. Rabbi Besdin ' s contribution, not only to Yeshiva University, but also to all of KM Yisrael, will secure an honored place for him among the giants of Jewish Education. Rabbi Jeruchem Gorelick, z ' tl, was also affiliated with RIETS for forty years, un- til his ill-fated passing. Rabbi Gorelick studied in Poland at the Yeshiva of Radun, which had been founded by the Chafetz Chaim, and later studied under Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinsky, the leading Posek in pre-war Poland and Lithuania. When he arrived in the United States, Rabbi Gorelick served as spiritual leader of Congregation Binai Israel, in the West Bronx, as well as teaching at numerous yeshivot in the Metropolitan Area. His years at Yeshiva University were just as fruitful and his position as Rosh Yeshiva will never be completely replenished. ; Rabbi Aaron Shatzkes, z ' tl, was a member of the RIETS faculty for forty years. Rabbi Shatzkes was a descendant of a great Talmudic family, among them Rabbi Abraham Aaron Shatzkes, the renowned spiritual leader of Vilna, Lithuania, and Rabbi Moses Shatzkes, the famous Lomza Rav. Our own Rav Shatzkes continued that great Talmud tradition which can he attested to by the vast amount of knowledge his talmidim took with them from his shiur room. Rav Shatzkes ' presence will be sorely missed. If taken seriously, the dual program is an onerous one, and its mastery is deserving of felicitations by your family, friends, and especially faculty. The times we live in are critical enough, even without the ominous overtones of George Orwell ' s famous novel which lends this calendar year such unhappy literary distinction. They will require of you not only technical and professional knowledge, but also wisdom, insight, and a finely honed spiritual intuition. We hope that you attained the beginnings of the former in your Yeshiva College classes, and that you took the first steps towards the latter in your Torah studies. May your own growth in both areas give you the intellectual, personal, and spiritual wherewithal to confront the great issues of your generation and master them in a way that will contribute le ' hagdil Torah u-le ' haadirah. The proposal, one of the several that are being discussed by a committee of Administration of- ficials and Roshei Yeshiva. would attempt to put students back into classrooms again, while enabling them to prepare adequately for the MCAT. LSAT. and GMAT ex- aminations. Eliminates Transportation Problem According to Rabbi Zevulun Charlop, director of the Mazer Yeshiva Program and chairman of the committee, implementation of such a proposal would also eliminate the transportation problem students have been con- fronted with en route to Kaplan ' s. which is located in Midtown. Rabbi Charlop has announced that the Mazer Yeshiva Program will undergo major changes in Shiur level and Strcture. Page 4. The excessive preparation for the college boards is all- consuming. Rabbi Charlop said, and it has taken away a great deal of time from the students ' Judaic Studies. Col 4 1 By a Special Commentator Correspondent Yeshiva University ' s Main Center in Washington Heights will be the initial focus of a major program to improve its facilities and outward appearance, the Commentator has learned. The Centenial Renovation and Rehabilitation Project, which will include university-wide improve- ments of buildings and facilities, will make the campuses a more functional and more attractive place to work and to study, said one administration offical. According to Dr Sheldon E. Socol. Vice President for Business Affairs of Yeshiva University, work has already begun on two of the Main Center ' s buildings, in- cluding the Mendel Gottesman Library and Science Hall, He also indicated that test borings are presently being conducted in preparation for the construction of the Max Stern Athletic Center this fall Plans for the Ma in Center Further plans for renovation at the Main Center include Rubin Hall, which would receive a major facelift, the addition of a furnished visitor ' s suite, and a fresh coat of paint. Lounges and common areas would be refurbished, and bath and shower areas would be rehabilitated. Some of the same improvements, including the refur- bishing of lounges and the repainting of walls, are also proposed for Morgenstern Hall. Under the plan, the renovation of Science Hall would include the installation of exterior lighting, the creation of additional faculty offices, and other improvements to ensure better energy conservation. Work at Furst Hall would include the refurbishing of the lobby and lounges, the rehabilitation of the building ' s elevator tower, and the relocation of various offices. The Yeshiva University Campus will receive a major face ttft. and with RIETS. The plan also calls for creation of student lounge facilities, the installation of a new roof, the repainting of the entire building, and rehabilitation of the structure ' s water and steam supply system. By MARK LEFKOVITZ Recently, questions have been raised concerning the propriety and legality of certain Yeshiva College Student Council actions. Earlier this year, a new Y.C.S.C. constitution was drafted by the Student Council ' in order to update the previous Constitution. New Governing Board Chosen; Smilchensky Elected Editor By JEFF SCHWARTZ April 27 — At 10:30, the Commentator ' s governing board began its deliberation for the selection of a new governing board and Editor-in-Chief. Approximately two hours later, il was announced that Ben-Zion Smilchensky, former News and Feature Editor would serve as Editor-in-Chief for the 1983-1984 academic year. , , . - „ , Ben-Zion. a resident of Sheepshead bay in Brooklyn, graduated with honors from the Yeshiva of Flatbush High School. He studied al BMT in Jerusalem for one year and is presently in Y.P. and an Economics major and computer minor heading for Business School. When asked about his plans for next year Mr. Smilchensky replied, We intend to further heighten the already high stan- dards of the Commentator, with the added emphasis on quality in- According to Avi Schneider, President of Y.C.S.C.. the old constitution was not accurate and many things in it were not applicable... We wanted to make It more of a living document, The process in which the Constitution was drawn up, however, has given rise to much criticism. According to sources close to Commentator when the Student Council formulated the draft. thev ed the old Constitution as a background while they rewrote a new Constitu- tion. Changes were not recorded as ammendments. Instead, the Coun- cil wrote up a draft based on the old Constitution and inserted the changes directly into the new text without any record of change. Some students believe that in deference to the existing document. the changing of a constitution must be effected through the adaption of ammendments Moreover, they feel thai the introduction of changes into the new draft without any record is questionable. Mr, Schneider, on the other hand, points out that most people did not even know that there was a Constitution until last April. The Constitution was a dead document until it surfaced last April and now a big deal is being made of it, He maintains that the revision of the Constitu- tion was done in a respectful ije Commentator MO Rat IIS Stint. Mr. Goldstein is entering his office where David is already seated. Goldstein: Hello David. How are you? David: Fine, thank you. G: Get to Y.U. okay? D: Sure, no problem. G: Well, David, I ' m not going to beat around the bush — I ' m going to get straight to business. Did you receive a ' bris? ' D: A what? G: A bris. You know, circumcision. D: Uh yeah, sure. When I was eight days old. G: Excellent! Excellent! I am so happy for you! I think I can convince the Admissions Com- mittee to guarantee a spot for you in next year ' s class. How does that sound? D: Well, great! G: Now let ' s look at your record. I see you spent two years in Israel ... Is that correct? D: Yes. G: UH-Uh . . . hmmm . . .; I see you earned 100 credits there — all A ' s. D: That ' s right. G: Excellent! Excelle nt! David, I think we should have no problem transferring all 100 credits of A to Y.C. Now your transcript only says Hebrew Studies — 100 credits — A. Now tell me, does this also include 8 Bible credits. Biblical Exegesis, Talmud, Jewish History, and Hebrewl,2, 3, and4? D: As a matter of fact, Mr. Goldstein, I was just saying the other day to my friend how I in- deed took all those courses in Israel. G: Excellent! Excellent! I think we will have no problem then in exempting you from these courses. Now you didn ' t happen to take Physics, Chemistry, and Biology at Hebrew Univer- sity in Israel in those two years? D: Uh . . . why yes! G: Splendid! Splendid! Then you will have completed our pre-med major. Provided, of course, that you took A.P. Organic Chemistry and six other credits in Biology in High School. D: Well, I was planning to take those courses this summer at Oshkosh Community College. G: Oh, that will be fine. Just fine. Now did you take music and art? Before D: I refuse to take those courses on religious grounds. G: That is pertectly acceptable, David. You may, of course, have to copy something out of Encyclopedia Judaica to sup- port that statement, hut in your case, I think we can overlook it. D: I ' d appreciate it. G: Well, David, looking at your record, I see that by the end of the summer, you will have completed 129 credits, including all of our residency requirements. This is very impressive. Do you have a checkbook on you? D: Yes. G: Well, if you just make a check out to Y.U., I think I can send you your diploma in, say, ten business days. How does that sound? D: Uh, fine, I think. G: Congratulations, David. You are a Y.U. graduate — and summa cum laude at that. I ' m sure your parents are very proud. Dr 19 Talks Students of Dr. Beukas are familiar with the countless stories and anecdotes he relates in his classes. However, most students become confused after hearing so many stories, and the stories seem to overlap and become the same. To rid my fellow students of this problem, I have written some of Dr. Beaukas ' stories, and provided a clear, concise interpretation of them. STORY 1: I was invited by the millionaire Greek, Mr. Onasis, to his luxury liner for a party off the coast of Corfu. At the time, I was still a boy. Anyway, I was dangling my feet over the edge of the shuttle boat, when suddenly, a silence fell over the passengers. It was the strangest thing. Then, without warning, I was yanked from my position and thrown to the center of the boat. I immediately noticed a large, grey shark pass the side of the boat at the very sp ot where I was dangling my feet. I was told by the sailor I had almost lost my feet. INTERPRETATION (My mom forced me to go to the family outdoor bar-b-que, one day. I had wanted a tuna fish sandwich. When my aunt O ' Nancy brought the sandwich, I lifted the bread and noticed there was not enough mayonnaise, and the tuna looked a little grey. The shock was too much for me, and I fell over backwards into a large puddle.) STORY 2: One time, LIZ . . . Elizabeth Taylor, that is . . . invited me backstage after a show. Of course, I know Liz and Dick personally ever since I worked with them in writing my thesis in Yale Drama School. The first thing Liz said to me was ' Beaukas, so glad you ' re here! ' I was touched. Such a big star, treating me so nicely. Before we could chat further, a swarm of reporters began banging on the door, demanding an audience with Liz. Liz was terrified and pleaded with me to stay with her and do what I could to protect her from the reporters. I obliged, and with a little cleverness, I disarmed and scattered the horde. Liz was so grateful. We later chat- ted over some coffee that Dick had brought. INTERPRETATION (I wanted to see Elizabeth Taylor, and I managed to sneak by the guards to arrive at her dressing room. I walked in and Liz said ' BEAUKAS — Get the hell out of here! ' She began sreaming like a maniac. Just before she was about to throw her shoe at me, there was a large pounding at the door — it was the reporters. Liz told me that the least I could do after intruding on her privacy was to somehow get rid of the reporters. I obliged. Liz was grateful, and she allowed me to run across the street and get her some coffee and get out of her sight.) STORY 3: After graduating from Yale Drama School and having been taught by the greatest names in theatre, I decided that the only way to realize my theatrical yearnings was to go to Yeshiva University and teach speech. INTERPRETATION (I graduated from Oshkosh Community College, with Farrah Fawcett as Dean. I finished with a 1.5 GPA, and it was either Y.U. or driving a cab.) STORY 4: I walked into the elevator in Furst Hall, and I found myself face to face with Rabbi Soloveichik. Immediately, our eyes locked .together, and we established an immediate rapport. The Rabbi ' s eyes told me that despite our differences in philosophy, behavior and religion, there was somehow a common link between us; a mutual understanding. I was overwhelmed by the man ' s presence and warmth. I will never forget the look in his eyes. INTERPRETATION: (I met the Rav in the elevator. I asked him what floor he wished. He replied, fifth. ) STORY 5: . . . and so, in the medieval era, continuing in the Italian Renaissance, we note the Important role masks have played in theatre and drama. By the way, archaeologists have found a beautiful porcelain and ivory mask near Greece, that was dated to this period. It is considered priceless, decked with jewels such as diamonds and rubies. I have a mask similar to it in my collection of masks at home. I ' ve been collecting masks for some time now, and I happen to think its pretty damn good. INTERPRETATION (When my kids were small, and went trick-or-treating in costumes on Halloween, I would save their masks. I have a really good ' Superman ' and an incomparable ' Incredible Hulk ' mask. I lost a really cute ' Batman ' mask.) ' If I don ' t get a girl in my cast next year, we put on La Cage Aux FoUes ' ' XPLODES . -4 ' fi Alorines die in Beirut blitz -?: •i .5.
