Curriculum Proposal Rejected; Faculty Appoints New Committee orpr couROE SEC By MARK MAZER Oct i: I he VC FacuIlN Assembly today uited unanimously to table discussion of the latest proposal of the YC Curriculum Committee 1 he Assembly also appointed a new eight member committee to formulate a new proposal. 1 he rejected proposal, which was presented last May after a car of deliberation inside the committee. called for a two year sequence of Great Books to replace most of the University ' s general education requirements. The first segement of that course was lo ha e been entitled Milestones of cstern Thought. a modular sequence emphasizing classical works n such areas as Socio psychology, political thought, philosophy and history of science. 1 he second year was to be Masterpiece of Western Literature, a course similar, but not identical to the current Humanities 1-2 course. (The current English Composition. Art, Music and Jewish Studies requirements were to have been retained). Reliable sources maintain thai the proposal was tabled without any substantne discussion about its merit, a fate w hich also befell the last curriculum proposal (developed bv the YC Senate) as it was rejected in 19X1, Ur Edward l.c y. who heads the Eacult .Assembly, felt that the proposal was too radical in its scope, and felt that the Faculty had not been properly consulted as the proposal was de eloped. However, it should be noted that in contrast to the Senate committee of two years ago, this committee was composed totally of faculty members, who were selected sol ely by their colleagues. (Two students, Dean Rosenfeld, and Mr Friedenberg of the Registrar ' s Office served as non oting consultants to the committee). Dr. Aaron Levine, who served as Chairman of the YC Curriculum Committee, disagrees. I Believe the faculty reacted to quickly to the plan.
