OMPVTERSC,EHCETCST Curriculum Proposal Rejected; Faculty Appoints New Committee orpr couROE SEC By MARK MAZER Oct i: I he VC FacuIlN Assembly today uited unanimously to table discussion of the latest proposal of the YC Curriculum Committee 1 he Assembly also appointed a new eight member committee to formulate a new proposal. 1 he rejected proposal, which was presented last May after a car of deliberation inside the committee. called for a two year sequence of Great Books to replace most of the University ' s general education requirements. The first segement of that course was lo ha e been entitled Milestones of cstern Thought. a modular sequence emphasizing classical works n such areas as Socio psychology, political thought, philosophy and history of science. 1 he second year was to be Masterpiece of Western Literature, a course similar, but not identical to the current Humanities 1-2 course. (The current English Composition. Art, Music and Jewish Studies requirements were to have been retained). Reliable sources maintain thai the proposal was tabled without any substantne discussion about its merit, a fate w hich also befell the last curriculum proposal (developed bv the YC Senate) as it was rejected in 19X1, Ur Edward l.c y. who heads the Eacult .Assembly, felt that the proposal was too radical in its scope, and felt that the Faculty had not been properly consulted as the proposal was de eloped. However, it should be noted that in contrast to the Senate committee of two years ago, this committee was composed totally of faculty members, who were selected sol ely by their colleagues. (Two students, Dean Rosenfeld, and Mr Friedenberg of the Registrar ' s Office served as non oting consultants to the committee). Dr. Aaron Levine, who served as Chairman of the YC Curriculum Committee, disagrees. I Believe the faculty reacted to quickly to the plan. We produced a general idea and wanted to see if the faculty approved before we dealt with specifics. Somehow the faculty Cont. on Page 7 Col. 5 3100 BieL 3 MS KIOl 3255 CMEn 3; ' 6;. Three Easy Steps ate is August 28, and You, Joe Pre-Med, AKA The Grub , have arrived at Yeshiva Col- lege for Freshman Orientation. Registration packets are hurled at you in a cloud of smoke by Edel- stein, and you are ordered to register. Being totally confused, The Grub seeks out advice — Stephen Lazar, where are you? Ask any Pre-Med you happen to see, he ' ll tell you, call Ein- stein the Med School. (Thank the Lord for little things — you would ' ve been up the creek without a paddle had Dr. Lazar (Ed.D.) been around.) Fortunately, Joe meets Senior into Einstein (known as Senior, among his friends.) Senior, who is in the Post-Med phase, sees a pre-med in dire need and offers him the following advice. 1 — Don ' t come to YU, quit while you ' re ahead, and go to Columbia. 2 — If you mess up and attend YU (don ' t complain to me four years later) spend a year at BMT first. The Grub hops on an El Al 747 jumbo jet to Israel, and arrives at BMT. Senior advises him to do the following. First and foremost, enjoy the greatest year in your life. Secondly, as far as coursework goes, your prime objective is to rid yourself of those tedious, pain in the — , Hebrew re- quirements. So enroll in Hebrew 1 and 2, 4 credits of Bible (at least), Jewish History 71 and 72 — That ' s 16 credits of requirements in a year of Israel, all A ' s. Throw in some philosophy (Maimonidies) and History (tours in Israel), (maybe they ' ll fulfill your social science requirement — this would raise the number of requirements you ' ve fulfilled to 22 credits) to make you appear well rounded and educated. Your year in Israel included the following: 42 credits of A, a 4.00, Dean ' s List, with Highest Honors. You ' re on your way! You ' ve returned from Israel, and guess what? — it ' s time for summer school. You ' ll be spending your summer at the exclusive Camp Ida ' s Summer Camp, in the Bahamas. An expensive place, about 2500 dollars for the summer, that offers limited accommodations — the neighborhood is col- orful. Ten credits of A; that gives you a 4.00 science index (to go along with your overall 4.00). Keep playing the game smart, and your letter of acceptance will be in the mail in about IVi years. Sophomore year is upon you, Joe. The time has come for you to diversify. Extracurricular ac- tivities (ECAC) are an integral part of gaining admission to the Medical School of your choice. The following options are available to you; it would be wise for you to pursue them: 1. The Commentator Newspapers always offer an impressive appearance for your AMCAS. Become the associate make-up editor (no easy task) and you ' ll have the position (make-up editor) locked up for the following year. It ' s automatic! Oh to be a junior and on Governing Board! 2. Involvement in a community activity — (helping old ladies when they cross the street) doesn ' t require much time, and it looks nice . Blood drive (little effort, big reward) It can ' t hurt, so get involved. Back to the realm of scholastics, register for the following courses: Bio with Dr. T., Humanities (A P N) — so once again, you ' ll appear educated), English Comp with Dr. Seemor Lainoff, Speech with Dr. Beukas, Soc 1 and 2 with Dr. You Know Lunnard, and Fencing as a Team Sport, Hockey Intramurals (athletics look nice on your application). You ' ll also be taking the English Lit CLEP in the spring. (Stop by the computer room or the Dean ' s office for the Mesorah). Make sure you get your copies of all Mesorahs — they are your key to success. Still a 4.00, Dean ' s List with highest honors — you ' re on your way to Summa Cum Laude. You ' ll spend the summer as a counselor in camp ( love to work with people shpiel ) and having an enjoyable summer — the upcoming y ear will be a rough one (the boards). KflPUIN EDUCATIONAL CENTER LTD. to A.E.C.O.M. -■.fWM M MM Mjmjwwimflac. ' JUNIOR YEAR — MCATs, Commentator Governing Board, A. ED. Pre-Med Honor Society, and an Orgo-Physics Double (only one semester of physics) — you ' ll be pretty busy. Fill the rest of your schedule with garbage — Sociology of Family and of Health, Bio Ethics with you know who (and aid for interviews), Modern American Fiction with Lainoff (A P N), and Bio 60 (It ' s impor- tant to show hospital work somewhere - How do you know you want to spend your life ' s work in Medicine? ) Scientific Russian with Louria easy, you need only one year and it looks good. Don ' t forget to join the Grossinger ' s Hotel and Country Club Shiur. (Speak to Bronstein for advice) Springtime at Kaplan ' s, lO ' s oti the MCAT ' s and you ' ll be in somewhere. Premed becomes Editor-in-Chief (may get you into Columbia) for the final feather in his cap. A successful year: 65 on the MCAT, interesting courses, and still perfect at 4.00. Once again, you ' re on the Dean ' s List with Highest Honors, you have Summa in the bag, and you ' re still in the running for Valedictorian. Your summer will be spent filling out applications (make sure to mail them early) and doing research for Friedman (of Einstein fame) at Harvard. On paper you look super, you have everything: Extracurriculars in all areas — athletics, newspaper, and old ladies, a perfect index, nice MCAT scores, research at Harvard, nice recommendations, and Hospital work. In addition, you ap- pear well rounded and educated. Senior year is a breeze. Goof off; play cards (pinochle and Rummy 500 are nice games) and puff basketball, join the ECAC, make road trips to Atlantic City and Ac- tion Park, write Hebrew Papers, and enjoy being Editor-in-Chief, and NEVER miss MASH and if possible, dat e because for 4 years you will never see a girl! Now that you ' ve taken the MCAT, gotten three teachers to lie about you in their recommenda- tions, survived your Junior interview (by answering the following question correctly — What is your name??), a key to success is become friendly with Rose, filed 32 applications, ordered 32 transcripts, you receive notice that schools are ready to interview you. In order to successfully maneuver through these interviews (i.e. lie through your teeth) you must come up with an answer to the following ques- tion — Why do you want to be a Doctor? There are several different approaches one can take. 1 — I want to be a doctor to help people. This approach was last used successfully by Marcus Welby in 1928. The interviewer was so impressed by Welby ' s ability to give this answer with a straight face, that he signed him to a contract to appear in a new TV series that portrayed physicians as caring leaders and not as money grubbing ego maniacs. 2 — To Make Money — the interviewer will slam down his Gucci stethoscope on his antique mahogany desk and yell out, What kind of motive is that? Before he can finish, his beeper goes off. He dials the telephone and screams, Code Blue — my medicaid stock just fell 20 points. He quickly grabs his Polo jacket and dashes out to his Porsche 924 muttering the next time E. F. Hutton is on the operating table, I ' ll make sure he never talks again. 3 — My mother told me to. The interviewer responds, you ' ve got to be your own man, and be assertive and don ' t let mommy push you around. As he escorts you to the door, his wife bursts in screaming, Where ' s the Chopped Liver, My Corvette won ' t start . . . January 15, you have graduated to become a Post-Med; YOU ' RE now Senior-Into-Einstein. Mazel Tov! It ' s now your job to advise (mislead) the masses of Premeds on how to get in and keep the tradition going. As June approaches, you realize that you ' re uneducated and into Med School. The picture of our committed but. at times, disgruntled little group, huddled about a table in Morg Room 101, munching on food from Morg Marl while mentally digesting the Masmid ' s latest finan- cial crisis, is forever imprinted on the retina of my mind ' s eye. It is an image to be recalled and savored when nostalgia for the past overtakes the tedium of the present. Plaudits are in order for individuals who significantU and tirelesslv contributed their sweat and talents to the development of the yearbook. In this category, 1 single out Nathan Fruchter, Lphraim Goldberg. Richard Reiss, Jeff Danowitz, Kevin Hayes, Michael Odinsky, and Bernie Marmorstein. What a glorious and vibrant bunch we were, immersed in our labor of love! We were inexorably tied together with a common purpose — to produce a document that would embody the spirit and flavor of the four years we had experienced at Y.U. I sincerely hope that we have succeeded in our task. May the yearbook afford both us and our classmates with the ability to recapture, in retrospect, the meaningfu l, as well as amusing, little details that pervaded our lives as we progressed from naive freshmen to sophisticated seniors. I wish to thank my room-mate Yaakov Friedman for tolerating the emergency Masmid meetings that were hastily convened at irregular hours in our dorm room. I would also like to express my appreciation to my bud- dies, Nathan Fruchter, Richard Reiss, Howie Schwab, Joey Bodner, Danny Epstein and Jacob Fleeter for sharing and caring, and for just being there when I needed a shoulder or two to lean on. The friendship and camaraderie thai nourished between us provided me with the perfect counterbalance against the rigors and pressures of Yeshiva College academic life-style. We are not usually afforded the privilege of conveying our feelings in print. However, as editor, I can exer- cise this option and herein convey my enormous gratitude to my parents and grandparents - their heart-felt encouragement has enabled me to reach goals I never thought I could attain. I will always endeavor to emulate the high moral and religious standards they have exemplified. Reserving the most cherished for last, 1 would like to impart my boundless devotion for the girl that I met at Y.U. — Stern Shabbatos and subsequently wooed and wed, my dear wife, Reva. Her steadfast confidence in my abilities is the cornerstone upon which I can build the future dreams of our lives. Samuel Johnson once critiqued an essay by one of his students with the following statement: I found your report to be good and original. However, the part that was good was not original, and the part that was original was not good. I hope that his evaluation of The 1983 Masmid would have been somewhat kinder. Yumi Bergen MASMID 1983 would like to thank the following people for their help in production of this yearbook; Dr. Sheldon Socol Vivian Owgang Rabbi Yosef Blau — for his bountiful memoriam Mr. Leo Taubes Mrs. Ceil Levinson Carol Roth Dr. Auther Tauber Mrs. Miller — Sports Allen Mayer — for his art work Steven Cohen — for the beautiful calligraphy Larry Baruch — for his A.E.C.O.M. satire Jeff Stock — for the Commentator history Larry Greenman B-Z Smilchinsky Tzvi Socol Jeff Katz Moshe Rosner Ted Schiffman, Flo Walton - Taylor Publishing Co. Ed Thornton, Mike Ken, Billy of Thornton Studios mA§miii ' B3 WlBMAiiim MRS. HENRIETTA FEENEY The registrar ' s office, what adjectives would you use to describe it? Busy, nervous, hec- tic, pressured, noisy, crowded ... it would take a true martyr to work under those condi- tions. Someone who is multitalented and organized, who can handle instructions from the administration, requests from the faculty and complaints from the students, while making each army feel that they are getting the better part of the deal. Someone who can take orders as well as give them. Whoever said, ' ' you can ' t please all of the people all of time didn ' t realize there was a Henrietta Feeney at Yeshiva University to challenge that remark. In an impossible posi- tion, she transforms unworkable beginnings into feasible conclusions. Starting on March 10, 1959 and continuing for the next twenty-four years, Mrs. Feeney has been an example of what giving is all about. She makes the office her second home; co-workers and students are treated like family. The class of ' 83 dedicates this yearbook to a woman who has illustrated the difference between those who park behind their desks and those who are ready to help the students standing in front of them. When we are afraid our hassling is becoming too much of a bother, she reassures us by stating that ' s what Fm here for. One may wonder why a Henrietta Feeney is dedicated enough to stay here for twenty- fourycars. She responds by saying ' T feel as if I belong here. This year ' s seniors will be the first to admit it. We mourn, but do we have an real sense of the loss? In recent years few students attended shiurim gi en in Yiddish; American-trained, younger maggidei v j wr attracted the large numbers. Net it was the small group of survivors of the destruction of Eastern European Jewry who were responsible for the blossoming of Torah in this countr . Without these Rahheim and others like them, there would have been no Americans capable of saying shiurim in English. The transplanting of the Torah of Brisk, Mir, Telz, and Radin to the United States is one of the most remarkable accomplishments of Jewish history. To go from observing one s world totally demolished, to rebuilding Torah rn an alien environment without speaking the native tongue, is an extraordinary achievement. Lnfortunaicly. the pupils who could not understand why their Rebbeim demanded so much from them and belittled American culture, often saw only bitterness and cynicism. Great scholars taught students who did not understand the topics that they had analyzed in depth, and great insights were left unexplained for lack of an appropriate audience. Despite all the frustrations and disappointments, slowly the level of American Yeshiva bachurim begin to rise. .Much Torah was lost, but slowly, the Beis Medrash Lights began to stay on later with crowds of Talmidim inside and Yeshiva Boys were not embarrassed to make becoming a Talmid Chacham a life ' s goal. Each of the four Roshei Yeshiva - Rabbi Yosef Leib . rnest. Rabbi Isaac Noach Borenstein, Rabbi Jeruchem Gorelick, and Rabbi Abraham . haron Schatzkes, of blessed memory — was a special person of exceptional quality; to speak of them onl as representatives of a type is to do them an injustice. The method of analyzing a sugya. the stress on original thinking or encyclopedic knowledge, the clarity of explanation was unique to each; both as Rosh Yeshiva and Tonih personality each deserves a proper hesped. The most striking contrast was between the quiet, unassuming Rav Schatzkes and the dynamic, fiery Rav Gorelick. Both were authentic exemplars of the complex richness of Torah life. Our lives were enriched by exposure to all four. Of far deeper significance, at a critical moment in Jewish history when great citadels of Torah learning were obliterated, these Roshei Yeshiva were among the precious few who were chosen by G-d to plant Torah in our new soil. .May their memor be a blessing to all who knew them personally and those who know them only indirectly. by Rabbi Yosef Blau Rab Joseph Arnest Z L Rav Noah Borenstein Yeshiva Shooting Believed Linked to 2 Others By LEONARD BUDER Within 15 days in June tbeie were three shooting incidents in upper Man- hattan invtriving diots fired from passing can.
