Hirsch Assistant to the Editor Jay A. Jacobs DiMGATION  :.0 P ' RABBI JOSEPH B. SOLOVEITCHIK Recognizing the inadequacy of the gesture, wc are dedicating the 1982 MASMID to Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik Shiita, the Rav. While it is beyond the scope of this dedication to even begin 10 describe the impact of the Rav on the Jewish history of our time, we can reflect on what his presence here at Yeshiva has meant to us. Only a small fraction of undergraduates study in the Rav ' s shiur and some of us have never heard him speak. Yet the quality of life at Yeshiva is enhanced for all of us because we at- tend the school with which his name is associated. For over forty years the Rav has flown in each week from Boston, a pace that would exhaust a younger man. Watching him walk between his apartment in Morgenstern Residence Hall and his shiur room in Furst Hall surrounded by his disciples is awe- inspiring. Any act of association with the Rav gives us stature. Yeshiva University as an ideal, not merely as an educational in- stitution, gains credibility and legitimacy because of the Rav. Over the years Yeshiva has been criticized from the left and the right, from without and even within, but primarily because of the Rav we must be taken seriously . Roshei Yeshiva are rarely philosophers. Jewish philosophers are usually not the most eloquent of speakers. The Rav dominates our world in both these areas and more. A rigorous thinker and yet a poet, he combines the precision of Brisk with an unusual sensitivity to feelings and emotions. The Rav ' s description of his grandfather Rav Chaim Soloveitchik as more importantly the man of Chesed, loving kindness, rather than the great creative halachik thinker applies equally to himself. Greatness in Jewish life must be reflected in character as well as in intellect; the Rav personifies both. His very presence each week, often at great inconvenience and pain, is an act of loyalty and devotion to the Yeshiva and his students. The inllucncc of the Rav extends to the practical realm of world affairs as well, particularly in his inspiring leadership in behalf of the Mizrachi religious Zionist Movement. The Rav regards the State of Israel as part of the historical religious destiny of our people, not merely as a secular political entity. He has, therefore, devoted his energies and his considerable ability to further the cause of religious Zionism in Israel and support the rebuilding of the Slate. Above all, in a world of narrow specialization, the Rav is a singular reminder of how broad a Torah scholar can be. His incredible erudition in many secular disciplines fits harmoniously into his Torah-true outlook. His concept of Torah knowledge is constantly expanding, incorporating a multiplicity of perspectives and skills. Unafraid of complexities and apparent contradictions the Rav simultaneously penetrates to the core of the idea while showing the validity of dif- fering approaches. We could never hope to duplicate the results of the Rav ' s genius but we can share in the realization that a religious Jew can think in large terms and need not fear confronting new ideas. Be a Jew in your home and a man in the streets, was the rallying cry of Judah Leib Gordon, the poet of East European Haskalah, who felt that this approach would lead to a general acceptance of Jewish par- ticipation in Russian society. He himself, though, sad- ly discovered that his formula would not work; those young people who had espoused this doctrine aban- doned the ways of Judaism to graze in foreign fields, severing all ties with the faith of their parents and ancestors. The philosophy of Yeshiva University rejects Gordon ' s credo. To be a functioning, contributing member of society, a Jew need not sacrifice his heritage; on the contrary, the goal of the Yeshiva graduate is to incorporate his Jewishncss with everything he does and have it permeate all facets of his life. Granted, today ' s America differs greatly from 19th century Russia; yet like Gordon in his time, we are confronted with a society from which assimilation beckons temptingly. Our reac- tion to this beckoning must be one of renewed and expanded commitment. We see ourselves as part of a long chain of Yeshiva graduates who will contribute in our various ways to American and Israeli life, both as Jews and as profes- sionals. We will be doctors, but not ordinary ones. Or- dinary physicians are not produced by a Pre-Medical society whose annual journal devotes an entire section to Halachik issues in medicine. Nor do average doc- tors come from a Biology department chaired by a Talmudic scholar who has written and spoken exten- sively on Jewish medical ethics. A special type of doc- tor emerges from a college which supplements medical knowledge with Talmudic wisdom. We will be doctors, but of the kind Rabbi Zalman Posner describes — doctors who can treat a patient, but can recite Tehillim for him as well. I W ' c will be hiwycrs ;ind political scicnlisls as well, bul of a special breed. During our four years at Ycshiva College wc have had Rabbeini who have not only laughl us what the Torah and the Talmud instruct the lawyer, but have written on the subject as well. What was left unsaid could be discovered in the Chaver program where wc were awed by a Rabbi Bleich. who beyond being a veritable encyclopedia of Torah knowledge is a professor of law. Rabbi Dr. Michael Hecht, our Pre-law adviser is further living proof of the harmonious blend of Torah and secular law. Career night brought us in contact with Yeshiva graduates who arc now making noticeable gains in corporate law, property law, government service and other legal areas in American society, while still finding time for Jewish communal work. Perhaps some of us will follow Julius Berman into corporate law or Manny Behar to City Hall. But in any case our concern will be real; it will be the type fostered by our activities in the Joseph Dunner Political Science Society — in our trips to Washington DC to oppose the AWACS sale or to lobby at the United Nations for Soviet Jewry. It is the American Jew ' s duty to bring the unique view of his heritage to bear on the issues that confront America. Medicine, law, and political involvement are far from everything that instill Yeshiva ' s unique influence on us and, indirectly, on the world; these are merely some of the more blatant examples. Perhaps the most blatant example of all is in the area of Torah and moral behavior. For the past four years at Yeshiva has molded many a stu- dent into a better, more deeply committed Jew. Maybe the nights spent shteiging away in the Beit Medrash evoked a change in our very beings. The beautiful Shiurim, heard from some of the most distinguished Roshei Yeshiva in the world, have undoubtedly made strong and lasting impres- sions on us all. Somehow, magically, over the years the metamorphosis has occurred. Many students have now advanced to the point where they can proudly declare that they know how to learn. And a few have even reached the higher level where they realize that there is much to be studied and a great deal to be accomplished before they can be considered true and respected Talmidei Chachamim. All this augurs well for the future. America ' s Roslici Ycshiva and pulpit Rabbis of tomorrow arc today ' s dcni cns of the Beit Hamedrash, whose Torah and ethical behavior will have been carefully nurtured at Yeshiva University, imagine. A single such young man has the ability to produce a tremendous impact; a group of dozens and hundreds can mean a rejuvenation of Orthodoxy in America. indeed, a rejuvenation has already begun thanks to the dedicated efforts of previous Yeshiva graduates. Some of us will join them in inspiring American youth to seek Torah and in guiding American Jewish families along a path of true Jewish observance. We, too, will travel far to become Rabbis in spiritually bar- ren communities bringing with us the particular spark of our personalities, our talents, our dedication and dreams. We will write and speak, chide and praise, coax and demand, and hopefully change things for the better. But our influence, we forsee, will not be limited to America; Israel welds a magnetic force on us of which only a few previous generations have been privileged to ex- perience. That of which our grandparents could only dream, we can live. Our practice of law or medicine and our profes- sional careers may be carried out in our homeland. Our learning and teaching of the Torah can be performed in the land where many of us studied for a year or two before entering Yeshiva University. Many of us spent a summer or two in Israel working for volunteer groups such as T ' chiya and other organizations in which we were able to reach and develop meaningful relationships with children from all walks of Israeli life. In Israel we will be able to join other alumni who have made Aliyah and have contributed greatly to Israeli society. Yeshiva University has provided many selfless men and women who now enrich Israel with their professional skill s and talents. To have given Israel a Rabbi Aharon Lichtcnstcin would have been enough of a claim to fame, but he is only one glorious part of a much larger contribution of teachers, businessmen, and professionals. And for those of us who have not as yet made serious plans or thought about living in Israel, we nonetheless will always remain committed to the security of Israel as a viable and independent nation. We will use whatever means we may have at our disposal — political, social, economic or other to insure the development and growth of our homeland. ' ;-; f,fmk,w ••  To those who would reject all that has been written on these few pages as mere propaganda, which ignores the pro- blems with life at Ycshiva, we say that they arc correct from a day to day standpoint. Our viewpoint, though, is one of retrospect which considers the overall effects of four years of our development. Four years of growth and maturation into contributing members of both American and Israeli society. The effects, if then honestly appraised, were beneficial ones. We are under- standing of Yeshiva ' s. ' -- ' ' - oblivious to then s weakpoi graduatmg class looks back and looks ahead, but most of all, it looks beyond. In looking back it gains a new perspective on the Yeshiva experience by passing over all the insignificant details and petty day to day complaints. Gone are the frantic cramming sessions and the overdue term papers: schedul- ing problems and closed courses dissolve away, as if all the undergraduate obstacles were but spirits and are melted into air. thin air. All that re- mains is the overall view of our college experience. And from retrospect we cannot help but being proud of the past and confident of the future. The City of New York Office of the Mayor New York, N.Y. 10007 Yeshiva College 2525 Amsterdam Avenue New York, New York 10033 On behalf of The City of New York, I am proud to congratulate the members of Yeshiva College ' s 1982 graduating class. The story of Yeshiva College is one of steadfast dedication to the spiritual and educational well-being of both community and City. My best wishes go to the graduates; and I hope that they will decide to live and work in New York, sharing their talents and creativity with the city we all love. Edward T. LAMM To the Class of ' 82 : I join your family and friends in offering you my warmest congratulations on achieving this milestone in your lives. Although obtaining a B.A. is, in our society and age, is no longer a singular achievement, it is most certainly a noteworthy accomplishment when one considers the dual program that you have followed during these years. You have worked hard, you have learned much and, with the help of the Almighty, you will contribute greatly to your communities, to your country, to Israel, to your alma mater, and to all mankind. As you go on towards your goals, always remember the Torah and the Madda you studied here. You will always be welcome to return and to exercise your leadership, as alumni, in the destiny of Yeshiva. But rather because what can one say that has not already been said, and said very well, other than to extend good wishes, which are always in order. In fact, however, that alone may be enough. The Birkhat Kohanim constitute the epitome of benedictions, and they certainly have never lost their force, in spite of constant and exact repetition over the millenia. Nonetheless, even if we can ' t conjure up some altogether new expectation, perhaps we can couch it in a new and surprising way. Our Hazal tell us that when speaking of a Beit Midrash or Yeshiva, S Aft )c ' | r ' 3 thousand come in and only one goes out. The plain meaning, of course, is that of the thousand who enter the Beit Midrash, we ' re lucky if even one reaches the aspirations of his teachers, of his rebbeim. I would like to interpret this aphorism a little differently. Namely, that of the thousand who enter the Kotlei Beit HaMidrash, for even one to be viewed as leaving it eventually is overly much. Our profoundest prayer in Yeshiva is that wherever you go, whatever vocation in life you pursue, and however distant geographically you may literally be from us, the Beit Midrash ' ■_ . you never] leave. Graduates 3-2 9-82 page two Is this not perhaps what David meant in the ' T IK 7 T H I I have asked for one thing of the L-rd and this I seek: To sit in the House of the L-rd all the days of my life and to see the pleasantness of the L-rd, and to visit in His sanctuary. On the face of it, the request is a contradictory one. First he says: to sit in the House of the l.-rd all the days of my life, and then he expresses the more limited desire, only to visit in His sanctuary. But, as we have intimated, it is possible to be away from the actual physical structure of the Beit Midrash and to come only to visit, yet all the while to be sitting in the House of the L-rd for the Beit Midrash has not left you. 1, ; i ft)(ii )7.J5 Sincerely, C: l ,eLA_V ' Rabbi Zevulun Charlop Director jf MAZER YESHIVA PROGRAM Rav Moses D. NY. 10033 (212) 568-8400 KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM Wisdom is, in the Bible, associated with the heart and not the head of brain. Thus, the architects and builders of the Tabernacle who were endowed by G-d with the spirit of Wisdom are described as wise of heart , and the Book of Proverbs tells us: The wise of heart chooses good deeds. There is, of course, a distinction between know- ledge and wisdom. Knowledge is lodged in the brain, the seat of the intellect, while wisdom, informed by knowledge, draws deeply upon the heart, the source of feeling and sensibility. Knowledge is objective and detached, and may have little im- pact on character and conduct, while wisdom inheres in the wise man to mold his personlity and elevate the meaning and quality of his life. . ■- The ideals of human faith, spirit, and endeavor, de- rive more from the wisdom of the heart than the knowledge of the mind. Secular education provides knowledge, but it is Torah learning that adds the dimension of wisdom which in- spires spiritual awareness and religious commitment. The Yeshiva graduate must aspire to be wise of heart even as he pursues the goals of knowledge, career success, and personal fulfillment, and he can do this by maintaining his bond of loyalty to Torah and Yeshiva. To all graduates, I extend my very best wishes for many and bountiful blessings. As members of our fifty-first graduating class, you share with your classmates and a half-century of alumni a commitment to the Yeshiva University ideal of Torah u ' Madda. This commitment has required an enormous investment of time and energy. You have subjected yourselves to the rigors of a dual program, each component of which is in itself demanding of full time attention. You have accepted the challenge of integrating your Torah studies with what is best in Western civilization and culture. Your success in meeting this challenge and realizing the University ideal will be reflected in your lives and careers. Graduates of the past fifty years have demonstrated in their lives and careers that this challenge can be met successfully and that the Torah u ' Madda ideal retains its freshness and vitality. Therefore, as you leave Yeshiva College, I urge you to bear in mind that you will be exemplars for future Yeshiva College men. I wish you wel I . S incerel y. NSI :cl 5. Norman b. Life is too short so why waste precious time. IN MEMORIAM RABBI MORRIS BESDIN Z L Rabbi Morris J. Besdin, Z L, was an unusual individual, someone toward whom all his students and col- leagues felt a special closeness. One might suppose that it was his down to earth, unpretentious demeanor that drew individuals of all ages towards him. Rabbi Besdin allowed himself to be susceptible to the love of all who knew him. However, he was a very modest man and could be easily mistaken for the Pasuk: Now the man Moses was very meek above all the men that were upon the face of the earth. His Modesty also brings to mind Moses ' descent from Sinai with the second Luchot, regarding which the Bi- ble tells us: And Moses did not know that the skin of his face sent forth beams . . . Moshe Besdin possessed this same quality of unconsciously enlightening all those with whom he came into contact. Rabbi Besdin referred to himself primarily as a Melamed, a clearcut testimony to his great humility. And a master teacher he was. Not only was he a man of great learning and scholarship, but he additionally had the rare gift of being able to impart all of that knowledge clearly and concisely to his students. What made Rabbi Besdin such a wonderful teacher? It was probably that he loved, not only his many students, but also the sub- jects he taught, one of which was Chumash. The love for Torah came across in each one of his classes, and his enthusiasm was sensed by all his students. After all, who wouldn ' t look in and listen intently when entreated to partake of a beautiful RASHI? Students of even the most limited background gained an appreciation for the brevity and clarity of Rashi ' s commentary from this great man. Rabbi Besdin took a deep interest in each one of his students, not only during their freshman year, when he was their teacher, but throughout their entire stay at Yeshiva and even later. In fact, it still isn ' t rare to see various postcards and letters from alumni adorning the walls of the JSS office. His offlce was always open to any student who had a problem, personal or otherwise, or who just wanted to say hello. He was always checking with various students to see if they were learning properly and if there was anything that he could do to help. Even after a long hard day of interviewing prospective students for JSS, he still would set aside time for a meeting with a student in need. This rare quality of Zerizut which Rabbi Besdin possessed is reminiscent of the exchange between Moshe Rabbeinu and G-d at the burning bush. And G-d called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and He said: Moses, Moses. And he (Moses) said: Here I am. Our Moshe, in his everyday dealings with students, faculty, and friends was forever saying, Hineini, Here I am, I am ready to give of myself. JSS, Yeshiva University, and the entire world will sorely miss Rabbi Moshe Besdin, Z L. May his soul be bound up in the bond of immortal life. — Glenn J. Shaflr IN MEMORIAM DR. DAVID MIRSKY Z L From his earliest years Professor David Mirsky served as a leader within the walls of Yeshiva University. His sojourn began as a student of the High School, where he was the first graduate of both the Teacher ' s Institute and the Talmudic Academy. Continuing on at the College, Prof. Mirsky served as a school leader, contributing to such activities as the dramatic society and school journals. After graduation in 1942 he proceeded to the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Seminary where he received smicha. Further graduate studies were pursued at Columbia and New York Universities. All the while a professor of English and Hebrew literature he continued to serve the University, first in the of- fice of the Registrar, then as the Dean of Admissions, Dean of Stern College and Acting Vice-President of Academic Affairs. His pervasive influence was felt outside the walls of the University as well. It may be said that just as David Mirsky served as Dean at Yeshiva University, so too did he serve as Dean of Jewish education within the greater world of education — Dean of Jewish education within a community composed of Deans of Education. Prof. Mirsky was active in, and held appointed and elected positions in various organizations within the academic world. Among these were; Council of Higher Educational Institutions of New York; Middle States Association Commission on Higher Education; Governor ' s Committee on Scholastic Achievement; Modern Language Association; American Association of Higher Education; President of the Histadrut Ivrit; National Chairman of the American Professors for Peace in the Middle East. Working outwards from within. Prof. Mir- sky was able to further the cause of Judaism as a moving force, in the establishment of regular testing on Sun- days for the Sabbath observant student. The sight of his black yarmulka trimmed in gold was a welcome and familiar sight among his colleagues, just as welcome and familiar as were his ready smile and probing mind. Yet, Prof. Mirsky was not satisfied with furthering the cause of education among educators alone. He reached out to the masses, the general public. To this end Prof. Mirsky proposed and hosted programs to be viewed on national television and radio. His series were entitled: Minorities in American Literaure ; American Literature — the Voice of Minorities ; College Clinic ; Focus on Education ; America Through 13 Pair of Eyes, Parts 1 2 ; as well as a series of broadcasts on Hebrew and Biblical Literature. Prof. Mirsky was one of the first hosts of early morning and late night media. We knew him as our professor, our mentor-patient, yet persistent. Results were realized because he realized the potential within us all. His love of students was obvious. His love of learning was overhwhelming. Prof. Mir- sky was able to bring to our lives a harmony of humanity and grace, a synthesis of the secular and the spiritual. David Mirsky was born in the city of Jerusalem, the city of David, to which he has now returned. Under his influence Yeshiva University flourished. Though he lived a lifetime within Yeshiva, what made him special was his relationship to the world outside its walls. Through his guidance his students gained knowledge. Through his endeavors the world of education enlarged. Culture thrived and study flourished. We mourn his loss and shall cherish his memory. We live on as a testament to the man that he was. — Yehudah Mirsky IN MEMORIAM [ ft Wi ' ■' SM ' i RABBI MICHAEL . ..•...;..c...... ...v-J ' BERNSTEINZ L i Very few members of the YC Class of 1982 had the opportunity and privilege to study with my father Z L, but most of you were his students. It is unlikely that many members of the graduating class were never taught in the course of their Jewish education, at YU or elsewhere, by talmidim of my father. From the time he came to MTA in the early 1930 ' s until his untimely petirah, my father was a part of Yeshiva, as student, rosh yeshiva, and professor in YC and BRGS. And from the time he returned to Yeshiva to stay in the late 1940 ' s, he was an integral part of that community in Washington Heights which centered around Yeshiva, a community which no longer exists, but has scattered to Queens, Flatbush, Teaneck, Monsey, and Long Island. In a certain sense, Yeshiva was my home as I grew up, and my father ' s home part of the Yeshiva. He lived in the vicinity out of choice, because he felt that it was not right that a rebbe teach and run; later in his life that choice became a necessity. He always davened with the boys, from the days when the minyan was still in RIETS Hall, and later in its travels to Rubin and Morg. Later on, when my father ' s twenty-year illness caused his health to deteriorate beyond the point that he could go to shul, the boys would come up on Shabbat to a regular minyan in his apartment. I still meet former talmidei hayeshiva, including those who never studied formally with my father, who recall fondly that davening, kiddush and the informal learning which followed. I have recollections from my earliest childhood of students coming and going in our apartment until late at night, seeking help not only in their studies, but asking advice regarding careers, jobs, shidduchim, problems and the like. The door was always open to the talmidei hayeshiva and they took full advantage of it. My father had the ability to speak to a talmid, or rather to allow the talmid to speak to him until the difficulty was resolved. And the boys did not forget. Whether they were able to visit in New York or keep in touch by mail or phone, a generation and a half of YU students acknowledged the debts they owed to my father. He was always glad to join in their successes and to lend an ear in their distress long after they had left the four walls of Yeshiva. My father ' s maspidim in America and in Israel delivered touching hespedim, including his life-long chaver Rabbi Moshe Besdin, Z L, who is lamentably being memorialized elsewhere in these pages, and the Rav, yibbadel lechayim, to whom this yearbook is dedicated. Rather than taking this opportunity to eulogize my father once again, I thought it particularly appropriate that this memorial to him be delivered by his boys, remembering him and thanking him, and acknowledging the multifaceted role which he played in their lives. These comments have been selected, with almost no editing, from letters of my father ' s former talmidim which my family received during our avelut. They are but a few chosen to represent many, and their authors were talmidim in the 40 ' s, SO ' s, 60 ' s and 70 ' s. ' ' The passing of Rabbi Michael Bernstein marks the conclusion and epoch within Yeshiva University that will never return. From his earliest days of association with our alma mater he represented the finest of love for students, high caliber scholarship in Torah and related studies, and commitment to those who were privileged to beneflt from his teaching and friendship. My youngest son who is now in his first semester in YUHS came home and told me of the passing of Rabbi Bernstein, Z L; he decided to listen to the hespedim, report back to me and thus represent the family. It is indeed fitting that a son should be present to give kavod to a Rebbe of his father, a man who placed a light kind hand on us, leaving a strong, distinct imprint. A week does not go by in which I do not find myself explaining insights that I have learned from Rabbi Bernstein. It is clear that he had more lasting positive influence on me than any other person. He taught me to be dedicated to Torah, to search for truth but to be intellectually honest with oneself and one ' s students about one ' s limited achievement, and to be deeply com- mitted to G-d and Judaism. I was always welcome in your home. Rabbi Bernstein was a person I looked to as an exam- ple, as a lamdan, a scholar and a human being. I really began to appreciate him more as the years went by. ' ' He was a master teacher, and his method of teaching from text and through text was an in- tellectual delight. One could learn so much not only from his courses, but also from the sichat chullin of this great talmid chacham. His courage in the face of illness is, of course, a story unto itself. I cannot speak for others, but, as for myself. Rabbi Bernstein ' s influcence on my intellec- tual and spiritual growth was deep and abiding. His best piece of advice about the difference between the Yeshiva world and that of baale batim served me in good stead. The lessons taught me by the Rabbi helped me to be true to myself and my family and to develop in Torah. He was in every way a scholar, a gentleman, and a baal middot, who personified everything that a ben Torah should be. In addition, he had a deep and genuine concern and affection for the students of the Yeshiva, and was always ready to help them with a kind word or a warm gesture. As one who was a recipient of his chesed at a critical point in my Semicha studies, I learned first-hand of his noble character and mesirat nefesh to all that was sacred at Yeshiva. At the hakamat matzevah in Israel, one of my father ' s talmidim remarked, You had sons who were your students, and students who were your sons. His family talmidim and talmidim ' s talmidim have shared a common loss, and we share a common responsibility to maintain the legacy which he has left us. — Moshe Bernstein (•AJI Hpi HHHHr v«r-- « A ACTIVITIES Ill ii vaseK VOL. 20. NO. 7 A Student Publication of Traditional Thought and Ideas Pubiished tyy The Jewish Studies Divisions of Yeshiva University HAMEVASER NEW YORK CITY APRIL 2, 1982 9NISAN.5742 Family Law Seminar by Stuart Ehrlich Recently, the Department of Continuing Education of Yeshiva University spon- sored a halachic seminar which dealt with the problems faced by a contemporary Jewish family. Unfortunately, most of us went on with our daUy lives unaware of this event. The fact is that the phenomenon of non-awareness continues. This is the symbolic importance of the halachic seminar. The simple fact remains that we, especially the students of YU, must become aware and more involved with the Jewish community and the problems it faces. The many outstanding scholars and orators gathered at the seminar included members of YU ' s extensive faculty and judges on New York ' s Supreme Court. The participants were secondary, though; it was the information that was being transferred from one to the next that was vital. An insight into the program is necessary. The main idea of the seminar wasn ' t simply halacha. It was how halacha and American Law can operate coherently with one another. Views were presented on how the Din Torah operates and which points are stressed, and which are finely thought out. On the fUp side, Rabbi Wohlberg, an eminent lawyer, descirbed the operational mechanics of the American courts in similar situations. Professor Twersky illuminated the growing fact that the Jewish conununity pressures us into taking child custody cases to a Din Torah. He cited some of the dinim that we have in Gamara Ketuvot on this subject, i.e. a boy, unlU the age of six, wUl stay with his mother and afterwards goes to his father; a girl always remains under the custod y and concern of her mother. In some cases, the Bet Din must take into consideration the child ' s overall welfare and go against the normal principles and conclusions. The lecture series, in its seventh year, is sponsored by the SOY Kashrut Committee. The speaker was Rabbi Menachem Genack, director of kashrut for the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations, who also gave the pre-Pesach lecture last year. Rabbi Genack opened his lecture with a D ' var Torah. He spoke about the obligation of simcha on Yom Tov. He came to the conclusion that Pesach has an added obligation of simcha that is manifested through the four cups of wine. Therefore, young children who do not gain simcha from wine should be given nuts and candies so they can enjoy simcha on their own level. Rabbi Genack then opened the floor to questions. Many interesting and informa- tive topics were discussed. The entire process of obtaining a hashgacha from the O.U. was outlined. The poUcies of the O.U. were outUned regarding problems that come up in the hashgacha process. Rabbi Genack discussed the various problems with Bishul Akum and Pat Akum (food cooked and bread baked by a non-Jew) and how the O.U. reaches a satisfactory agreement with a non-Jewish producer. Rabbi Genack was able to provide the students with a basic understanding of the concept of hashgacha and some of the detail involved in its application. This year ' s format, emphasizing the questions and answers over the D ' var Torah, was greatly appreciated by the students, since it enabled them to understand many of the confusing issues which come up year after year. Rabbi Lamm Delivers Sixth Yahrzeit Lecture By MORDECHAI TWERSKY March 16— Speaking before a capacity crowd in the Gruss beit medrash. Rabbi Norman Lamm, President of Yeshiva University, gave the sixth annual Samuel Belkin Memorial Shiur today. The shiur, wtucn was also given to com- memorate the yahrzeit of Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Spector, after whom RIETS is named, marked the opening of the RIETS Mid-Year conference. Heading the long list of rabbis and rab- binical alumni in attendance were Rabbi J.B. Soloveitchik and Rabbi David Lif- shutz. The shiur, which lasted well over an hour, dealt with the topic of Kriyat Shema and Boruch Shem K ' vod. Rabbi Lamm spoke of the two opinions concerning the mitzvah of Shema; whether the mitzvah was the actual recital (Amirah) of the the Shema or was the mitzvah for one to be Mikabel 0) Malchut Shamayim while reciting the shema. Before giving his remarks. Rabbi Lamm was preceded by Rabbi Gilbert Klapperman, President of RIETS Rabbin- ic AJiunni. Rabbi Lamm speakingJo an over-flow- ing crowd. Yeshiva Mourns Loss Of Dr. David Mirsky On Tuesday March 30, Dr. David Mirsky, beloved teacher, administrator and parent, passed away. Dr. Mirsky was Professor of English at Yeshiva Univers- ity, and was recently elected to receive the Senior Professor Award for 1982, at Yeshiva College. Burial was in his native city of Jerusalem where his family had dwelt for seven generations. Dr. Mirsky was 60 years old. Professor Mirsky, who had been affiliated with the institution for almost 50 years as a student, teacher, dean, and acting vice president, also transmitted his expertise in education and literature to a broad audience of New Yorkers through the creation and development of diverse radio and television series over a period of more than 20 years. A member of the Yeshiva University faculty since 1948, Dr. Mirsky was named Assistant Professor of Hebrew and English Literature in 1953, Associate Professor of English in 1962, and Professor of English in 1966. He served as Dean of Admissions, 1963-68. In 1968 he became Dean of Yeshiva University ' s Stem College for Women, the nation ' s first undergraduate school of liberal arts and sciences for women under Jewish auspices. In September 1975 he was appointed Acting Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University, holding both positions concurrently. A multi-dimensional personaUty, Prof. Mirsky developed and broadcast two separate educational television series titled America Through 13 Pairs of Eyes, which began on WABC-TV in New York in 1966 and ran until 1968. The series analyzed the natuiA as seen by 26 American writers of the 19th and 20t,h centuries. He developed and hosted the television se ries Minorities in American Literature, on WMYC-TV New York, which was distributed state-wide by the New York State Education Department, [Continued on Page 6] Purim Chagigah Restores Old Style This year ' s Purim chagigah brought back memories of past chagigot as well as setting standards for all future chagigot. This year ' s festivities began with the reading of Megilal Esther in various places around Yeshiva and at Stem CoUege. The jubilant crowds at the megilah readings were indicative of the mood for the evening. The chagigah began with spirited dancing, as the students of Yeshiva quickly warmed to the festive occasion. ■There were so many students attempting to enter the chagigah that there was trememdous congestion at the doors. In addition to the hundreds of students who came many Raboeim attended, most notably Rabbi Lamm, Rabbi Charlop, and Rabbi Blau. Rabbi Lamm did not dehver a speech or participate visibly, but rather, he spent his time celebrating Purim with the students, and enjoying the chagigah itself. About an hour and-a-half after the chagigah started, SOY, which sponsored the chagigah, restored an old tradition, [Continued on Page 6] Major MYP Changes-See page 3 Top Row, Left to Right; Steven Feldman, Zev S. This school wa§ originally located in the Lower East Side of New York City. The Talmudical Academy, as it was called, together with the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theo- logical Seminary, The Teachers Institute for Men and the newly formed Y ' eshiva College, moved to what is now the Main Campus of Y ' eshiva L ' niversity, in Wash- ington Heights, in 1929. In 194.5. the late Dr. Samuel Belkin, second president of Ye- shiva, established a Brooklyn branch of Talmudical Academy, on President Street, in the Crown Heights section of that borough, to coexist with its already thriv- ing Manhattan high school. Dr. Shelley R. Saphire. principal of the Manhattan branch assumed the leadership of the Brooklyn school, too. Girls School In January, 1948, Y ' U took an- other giant step in Yeshiva High School education with its decision to open an institution for girls, the first of its kind in the coun- try. After many attempts to choose a name for the school. Central Yeshiva High School for Girls was chosen. It, too, was lo- cated in Crown Heights. In the early fifties, both (Continued on Page 11, Col. 1) Extensive renovations of the YCDS Studio Theater are expected following a recent visit by the New York City Fire Marshals. The inspectors, who paid a surprise visit to the Student Union Building last month, issued a very unsatisfactory report. Lack Of Exits The principal problem is the JLlBS 6rdAA AwnU9 theater ' s lack of two viable exits. Though the theater does have two sets of doors, one is located behind the stage and is obstruct- ed by the sets (see diagram, point Al. In addition, the firemen objected to the storage of sets and other paraphenalia in the upstairs corridors and the ramp leading downstairs. Also paper and other garbage from other student activities reportedly cluttered the halls and offices of the YC Stu- dent Council, WYUR and The Commentator, all of which are lo- cated on the second floor along- side the theater. Neither the main entry aisle into the theater (point C), nor the access aisle to the tiered seats (at D) meet the necessary four-foot width requirement. Consequently, one of the double doors at the main entrance to the theater (at B) is partially obstructed by the seats. A center aisle is also nec- essary in the middle of the main seating area (at point E). and none currently exists. Proper exit signs over the doors and leading out to the corridors were missing, as was a fire extinguisher. Also, the extensive electrical wir- ing used to supply power to the theatrical lighting is inadequate. Currently, there exist two pro- posals to correct the exit prob- lem. The question we are now facing is whether Brookdale i.- more valuable than the facili- ties it now contains. Dr. Bren- ner listed four options currently being considered by faculty com- mittees at Kerkauf and Wurz- weiler. They are: moving to the Science Center ( P.elfer building) at the uptown campus; moving to the ' an Etten hospital in the i;;nstein complex; remaining at Eiookdale, but con.solidating ' space: or maintaining the status (:.io if the drawbacks are found to outweigh the benefits. The fiscal benefits of renting out several floors at the Brook- dale Center, which is considered prime real estate are obvious. Though the rented space would be taxable and compatible ten- ants would have to be found, the revenue would, by conservative estimates, exceed $5(i0,0O0 an- nually. The length of the lease and the cost of remodeling are al.so important financial consider- ations. Impact of Relocation The impact on the campuses at which the .schools might relocate is also being studied. The Belfcr building would have to be able to accommodate the school ' s phy- sical needs, and further parking (Continued on Page 10, Col. i) Top Row, Left to Right: Marc Berger. A Tribute To There are three minutes remaining in the game. The fans arc sitting on the edge of their scats. It does not make the slightest difference that the Yeshiva Maccabees arc about to be crushed by Lehman. The only thing that matters now is whether Harvey Sheff will be able to break Stuic Poloncr ' s eleven year old all- lime scoring record of 1378 points. Harvey docs not disappoint his many fans. With only seconds remaining on the clock, Harvey converts a layup on a pass from Alan Sapadin giving him 26 points for the evening and 1 380 career points — surpass- ing Stuie Poloner by two. For those who are privileged to know Harvey, this feat came as no surprise. Harvey was just continuing where he started off in high school. Known in HI LI as the scoring machine, he set all types of team and league scoring records. He was voted MVP of the Metropolitan Jewish High School League and played alongside Danny Shayes (presently with the Utah Stars in the NBA) in the first annual Jewish High School all-star game. After spending a year learning at N ' vei Yehoshua in Israel, Harvey came to Yeshiva. He immediately gained the respect of his new teammates. Playing his masterful chefs role, he quick- ly began to cook his opponents. His burning baseline drives and precision shooting became Maccabee legends. It may be many years before his record of 1 500 career points is broken. Some of his other honors include; captain of the Maccabees, all con- ference team for 4 consecutive years, all tournament teams, and nnally Jewish athlete of the year for 1981-1982. Harvey, however, is best known for his off the court role. His dedication to Jewish tradition as well as his wit are well known to his many friends. In fact, Harvey ' s decision to come to Yeshiva was based not only on the quality of its Torah educa- tion, but also because Yeshiva is the only college of its kind not to schedule basketball games on the Shabbat. Harvey, an Economics Major, plans to go into business. Meanwhile he will be playing professional basketball in Israel this coming year. Whichever team he plays for will discover a serious and committed Jew, as well as a natural leader. For there is no doubt that once in the lineup Harvey will resume his role as team captain, in every sense of the word.
