Each of us must mal e his individual choice - can only hope that we at Yeshiva have provided you with a vis and value system which leads to a wise choice. A choice whic necessitates honest and courageous convictions, a firm refusa stubborness in fact, to succomb to the temptation of ma -- ' ' opportunity and expediency which unfortunately are so p in today ' s society. lent On behalf of the faculty and admini warmest wishes that your goals be acco our hopes for you be realized. hed , and your hopes and It is with the greatest respect and admiration that we dedicate MASMID 1980 to Michael Hecht, Dean of Yeshiva College, 1979-1980. S n the beginning, Torah met Madah. Together they formed a union, bound together by common interests and goals. Their home was est ablished in upper Manhattan where they grew, propered and raised a family. And they lived happily ever after . . . YESHIV NIVERSITY Such is the legend. Unfortunately, WE are bound by the limits of reality. Our version of the story must also be told. Synthesis ... A commitment to Torah as a way of life while engaging in the philosophy with which we have been inculcated. What exactly does it mean? We are not sure that any of us know. -.JSS JSmtsm- Torah U ' Madah is a system intended to deal with the crisis facing the modern Jew. It enables one to achieve a degree of harmony with modern society through the realization that secular society can coexist with, and can at times complement, the world of Torah. And how does one internalize this grandiose ideal? This awesome task is left to each individual. 1 W i m 1 B Hlt 1 - - ' I 9  ;Li M H For four years we have been handed the necessary materials. We extract what we wish and what we are able. For four years we have been given the impetus in the form of abstract ideals. Whatever has been concretized has been dependent upon our willingness to face the task. Have we spent these four years agonizing over the ideal of Torah U ' Madah ? Have we devoted the bulk of our time to philosophic speculation? Alas, the truth is no, for we have not had such leisure. Our time has been de- voted to problems of a different realm. For it was not long before the blissful naivete of our freshman year was cruelly obliterated that the impossibility of our situation dawned upon us. Namely, how is one to achieve this proper balance between shiur, bio, lit, orgo, speech, chem, poli sci, info sci, psych, and calculus, while simultaneously attempting to make one ' s mark in that forbidden world of the social sieve; while at that very moment pondering upon that fantasy story you will offer as an explanation to your rebbe for your inevitable late arrival at morning shiur? Oh, let us not even mention midterm weei , research papers, study week or our late night labs. Oh, what has become of the hours which were to be spent in the philosophic analysis of the concept of synthesis? Reality has forced us to develop our own philosophy as well as our own philosophic terminology. The Yeshiva College student philosopher has (a) engaged in the process of pulling all nighters to ace the course, (b) avoided all PhD ' s referred to as Dr. Hook, (c) disregarded the earth ' s revolutions around the sun and established his own thirty-six hour work day. Perhaps our system lacks the spectulative quality of Cartesian doubt, or the moral concern of Kant ' s Categorical Imperative, but it is the only method we have discovered of coping with reality. Thus, on the basis of pragmatic value we find its justification. The dormitory is the grounds upon which we test our philosophic theory and system. The walls of Rubin and Morg have seen our euphoria in victory and our frustration in failure. They have seen our early morning minyanim and our late night water fights. 4 dilBiiiiMiilAiBiiiytoMMttHii: I ♦re ' They have seen our simcha in celebrating engagements and our aveiut in mourning the passing of our loved ones. As we have undergone personal metamorphosis, so too has this institution. A new president with a new administration, the coming and going of three different deans of students, the continuing financial crunch and the birth of a new motto — We will because we must. Departure causes one to reflect upon that which he is about to enter. The world has changed with us. The era of peace between Israel and Egypt causes us to rejoice with trembling. The renewed tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union causes us to wonder if times are really changing or merely playing repeat performances. We wonder, for we do not know. We search for answers, while not fully understanding the questions. We strive for excellence in two worlds, fully aware that few ever achieve excellence in even one. Perhaps it is our youthful naivete which allows us to carry on. Perhaps it is our idealism. Perhaps it is necessity. -_. _™ - If one tells you he has search and struggled but has not discovered, do not believe him. If one says he has dis- covered without struggle, do not believe him. However if one says he has searched, struggled, and then discovered, believe him. This is our truth and discovery at Yeshiva. There are those in Yeshiva who believe that Pre-Meds have no religious inclinations. To the contrary, they fervently adhere to the TEN COMMANDMENTS OF PRE-MED I am a grub, selfish, the only person that really matters. II. Thou shalt worship any graven images or likenesses of Stanley H. Kaplan. III. Thou shalt not mention Zelefsky ' s name in vain. IV. Remember the day of thine first acceptance to sanctify it. V. Honor thy father and thy mother, even though they are the ones putting thee through the hell of Pre- Medicine. VI. Thou shalt tamper with thy fellow ' s experiment. VII. Thou shalt become intimate with doctor— seeking girls. VIII. Thou shalt cheat and plagarize for the A . IX. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thine fellow cheater unless thou canst benefit from it (get an A ). X. Thou shalt not merely covet thy fellow grubs ' acceptance letter; thou shalt withdraw his name from all schools to which he has applied, thereby creating an opening for thyself. Ail for a med school seat. A typical Senior ' s request: YESIIIVA UNIVERSITY REQUEST FORM This form is for students to use in requesting inform ation and specific rulings from a school office. The student must not presume that a request has been approved, but most receive written notification. If the student wants the reply mailed to him he should attach a stamped self-addressed envelope (no stamp required of dormitory residents) ; otherwise the reply will be held at the office in which the form was filed and is to be picked up there. Underlying the ethic of victory is the mystical doctrine that creation is incom- plete. God purposely left one aspect of creation unfinished in order to involve man in a creative gesture and to give him the opportunity to become both co-cre- ator and king. Under victory we under- stand, not only the subjection of nature to the needs of man, but also the establish- ment of a true and just society and an equi- table economic order. Rabbi Joseph B. To endure a virtual triple program takes a great deal of fortitude. Yes, the athlete-jock at Yeshiva is an un- usual individual. The same guy who only hours earlier had been chavrusing in Gemorah, solving a difficult chemistry problem, debat- ing a matter of history is now div- ing at an opponent for a quick takedown, swishing a turn around jumper, serving unreturnably or scoring a touch against. Victory is not often at hand, and yet he perseveres. w WltBu No one can question his sincerity but many question his sanity. One line on a graduate school appli- cation isn ' t worth all that effort. How can one rack his body at night after having done so to his mind all day? The physical rewards are few. The poorly equipped Yeshiva of- ten fails to provide the facilities necessary for a student to ade- quately train for intercollegiate competition. But still he perseveres. Many Yeshiva coaches have come through the ranks and they know the feeling of frustration. They too have lost the close ones and they know defeat all too well. But the special relationships all the coaches form with their players some how compensates. And so Yeshiva wins and loses. That winning buz cr, the raising of the wrestler ' s hand in triumph, that final touch, all that diligence, all that training, all those fruitless efforts— suddenly worthwhile. There is an unmatched feeling of exhiliration. Our bond of heritage is a link to victory. The Yeshiva athlete is con- stantly aware of who he represents. He remains first a Jew. So when the Yeshiva fans cheer, they cheer not only for his personal accomplish- ment, but for their own accom- plishment in his victory. They are one people. And so Yeshiva wins and loses. A strong kinship develops be- tween teammates at Yeshiva. It gives a student a keen competitive edge. He wants to win for the guys. They ' re depending on him and he ' s not about to let them down. Nor can he forget those late-night bus rides together or those rigorous team warmups. And so Yeshiva wins. MACCABEES top row: I. to r.
