The appointment of Rabbi Dr. Nor- man Lamm to the Presidency of Ye- shiva marks the first time that one of its own graduates has been chosen to lead Yeshiva. Under the leadership of Drs. Revel and Belkin zt l. Y.U. be- came a major university and the ideal of Torah Umadah as a synthesis was realized. Yeshiva, along with all other institutions of higher learning, is in a period of crisis, in which the whole value of a college education is being questioned. In this difficult time w-e hope that Dr. Lamm will show the wisdom and courage needed to renew and strengthen the foundations of this venerable institution. The class of ' 77 pledges its support in this struggle and we are confident that Yeshiva. with Dr. Lamm at its helm will survive and thrive. With these thoughts in our hearts, we dedicate MASMID 3977 to our fellow alumnus. Dr. Norman Lamm, third president of Yeshiva University. YESHIVAVUNIVERSITY Yeshivagram Dear Freshman, Welcome to Yeshiva University, the largest institution of higher education under Jewish auspices in the United States. Guided by the ideal of Torah Umadah, Yeshiva is the home for such diverse elements as a Beis Medrash, a liberal arts college, and graduate schools. Yeshiva College, the backbone of the University, encompasses a broad spectrum of programs, including Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. The student body, although comparatively small, is a diversified group, representing all regions of the U.S. and all major Jewish communities abroad. The uniqueness of Yeshiva is to be found in its Judaic Studies programs which offer something for everyone. The Yeshiva Program combines independent study in Talmud with high level lectures by renowned Talmudists, while the James Striar School molds Bnai Torah out of students with limited backgrounds. The Erna Michael College offers its wide variety of courses (with instruction in Hebrew) and is concerned with training the Jewish educators of tomorrow. Although the dual program of secular and religious studies occupies much of the student ' s time, Y.U., nevertheless, offers a wide range of popular extra-curricular activities. Inter-collegiate competition is available in basketball, wrestling, fencing and bowling and there is a host of intramural sports. Dramatics is an exciting pastime at Yeshiva and other diversions offered include the school ' s own radio station and numerous scholarly and popular publications. Over the next four years, you will be given the opportunity to engage in as many of these activities as you choose. Your college career will be as productive as you make it. f THE CAFETERIA HOURS FOR THE EVENING ARE: DAILY: 5:00 — 8:00 p.m. SUNDAY: 5:00 — 7:30 p.m. Shabbos patrons will not be served unless there is payment in advance. This year has been a fateful one in the life of our Ydshiva . It was witness to the untimely passing of our great, rabbe. Dr. Samuel Belkin ' ' - jf, the architect of our university, who brilliantly pinioned much of the loundation stone of authentic Jewish life on these shores and beyond . It also ushers in a new era, when for the first time, our own, an illustrious alumnus of our yeshiva anfl college has taken the helm of our Alma Mater. We wish Dr. Lanun well and the help of Providence as he responds to this at onCe portentious and challenging call. ' ' lb I believe that in the last years there has been more Torah here than there was before, even as there may have been more University than before. My prayer is that you will take this Torah and this Madah as you leave our yeshiva, and deepen it and enhance it in the service of the Al-Mighty, our people and all mankind . May G-d be with you in all your endeavors as you carry forward the sacred heritage wllELch is so uniquely ours. Sincerely yours. MRS. The mutation of a warm, ongoing student-teacher rolati ' . t sometime, although hope- fully still warm, alumni-colleague relationsh B is bittersweet, dotted with exhilirating peaks of accomplishment and tBubled by the troughs of ' ■« 9 ifs and we should have...,. . But this much is clear: you are the ■ T irreplaceable, ihdispinsable resourde aM reservoir of the Jewish Community and there will be no meaningful tomorrow without your contribution. The rigors of the dual program have not only touched you personally but equipped ' you for service and leadership, whatever your career, and the veritable survival of the Torah Community depends upon you. The respon - sibility is awesome, yet elevating and enno ' bling. One hopes that your tomorrow will harbor kind and gracious memories of yesterday and that your mature perspective will encourage today ' s children as they move, each on his c n a-Wkr to their own tomorrows. Thus, thr? mciiiLects and builders of the Tabernacle who v ere endo ed by G-d vith the spirit of V isdom are do. ' jcrlbed as ' .- ise of heart , and the Hook of Proverbs tells us ■ The v ise of heart chooses good deeds . There is, of course, a distinction bot. vor-n Vrno ' - ledge and wisdom. Knowledge is lodged in the br in, the seat of the intellect, while v isdon, informed by knov ledge , draws deeply upon the heart, the source of feeling and sensibility. Knov ledge is objective and letached, and may have little .ijnpact on character and conduct, while wisdom inheres in the ' .ir e man to mold his personality and elevate the meaning and ouality of his life. The ideals of human faith, spirit, and onleawor, derive more from the wisdom of the ■ eart than the knov ledge of the mind. Secular education provides knov ledge, but it is Torah learning that - ' Ids the di- mension of wisdom which inspires spiritu. ' l awareness and religious committment. The Yeshiva graduate must aspire to be wise of heart even as he pursues the goals of knowledge, career success, and personal ful- fillment, and he can do this by naintaining his bond br loi ' .ilty to Torah and Yeshiva. Here, too, living in a small community of scholars, in the religious as well as in the ecular fi ld, you were given the opportunity not only to complete required courses in preparation for your professional goals in life but also to deal with ideas and, above all, to deepen your dedication to the understanding and observ- ance of our traditional laws and customs. Here you were daily exposed to the problems which arise v;hen modern cultural and social patterns challenge ancjierit ones, with the expectation that mature minds will blend SGaniingly contrastive patterns in  uch a fashion as to have our ancient traditional patterns reinforce the modern ones and vice versa. I trust that your Yeshiva education based on th6 principle of ? As you, members of the 46th graduating class, leave the sacred halls of Yeshiva, the best wishes of the faculty, staff, and administration go with you.
