Ads 123 Dr. Samuel Belkin was a young man of thirty-one, only fourteen years in the United States, and hardly known to the Jewish Commu- nity at large, when he became president of Yeshiva. With a wisdom that seemed almost prophetic, a successor to Dr. Bernard Revel was found who would wear the mantle of leadership with a strength of character and vision of purpose that even his most ardent admirers could not have anticipated. Dr. Bolkin, after having studied ol the world renowned YESHI- VOT of Mir and Radin in Europe, arrived in the U.S. in 1929 at the ago of 18. In 1935, Dr. Belkin, who  ix yean earlier tp oke only Yiddiih, Hebrew, and Polish, came to Ye hivo College oi initruclof of Greek, and a year later became a ROSH YESHIVA m RIETS. Thus, in only 6 years, he had mastered the English longuoge, gone through college, received a Ph.D. from Brown University, woi elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and was awarded an honorary fellow- ship at Brown University. Most important, however, a great scholar was now brought to Yeshiva College and R.I.E.T.S. Following the death of Yeshiva ' s first president, Dr. Bernard Revel, Dr. Belkin was appointed a member of the Executive Com- mittee of Yeshiva College and Dean of Rabbi Isac Elchanan Theo- logical Seminary. In May 1941 he became president of Yeshiva University. ■Tjj « niN ' In addition to his profound scholarly contributions in his major interest areas. Dr. Belkin demonstrated marked administrative abil- ity, tireless energy and unusual leadership qualities. He was able to relate to his students with warmth and compassion. Concerned with each young man, he provided help to those who needed it, visited them when they were sick, fed them at his home, and worried about their needs. In return, his students revered him, confided in him, and sought his advice and approbation. In addition to deliver- ing his regular shiur, which was a marvel of logical exposition, inci- sive reasoning, and broad scholarship, and writing his many schol- arly articles and book. Dr. Belkin, upon assuming the presidency, gave himself completely to blueprinting an expansion of the Yesh- iva. The critical years immediately following his assumption of office were characterized by the agony of being aware of the terrible tragedy of the European holocaust, and the annihilation of Jewish Centers of learning. Dr. Belkin was determined that RIETS and Yeihivo College would carry the American Orthodox Jew to hii complete educotionol fol- fillmont. Dr. Belkin planned that under Yethivo ' j auipicet men and women would be able to enter every career and profetiion without losing a jot of their Jewijhneii. Education, social work, medicine, and the sciences, fields where quotos on Jewish odmitsions or other difficulties hod severely limited the Orthodox Jewish student, would now be opened to them. In short. Dr. Belkin projected a blueprint for a broad and encompassing university progrom. Dr. Belkin ' s plan was realized when in 1 945, the necessary foun- dation for the program was achieved when Yeshiva was elevated to university status, thus distinguished it as the first Jewish university in America. The institution also made significant advances in other areas as well. In 1954, Dr. Belkin was directly responsible for the establishment of Stern College, America ' s first liberal arts college for women under Jewish auspices. In 1955, one year after Stern was founded. Dr. Belkin opened the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Other schools founded under Dr. Belkin ' s administration are graduate schools in physical and social sciences, humanities, ond social work. YESHI VA UNIVERSIT. ;jROOM NDADMlNI?mTI0NBr ' 11 Be Constructed 1 In the past thirty-two years, Yeshiva has grown from a small col- lege complex with an enrollment of 850 students to an enrollment of over 7,000 students. Yeshiva ' s single building in Washington Heights has evolved into four major campuses within the Bronx and Manhattan. Through Dr. Belkin ' s tireless energy and unusual leadership qualities, Yeshivo has mode, and continues to make, a significant contribution to American education and culture as a whole. But its dedication to Ortho- doxy — to maximum Jewish commitment and to maximum Jewish reli- gious values — is its principal source of strength and hope for its future. SENIOR CLASS OF 1976 PROUDL Y DEDICA TES MASMID TO RABBI DR. SAMUEL BELKIN SCHTTERED P I E T U R E 5 DFTHE 5NILE5 ME LEFT BEHIND It is a common phenomenon that just the prettiest girls rid it so difficult to get a man. Heinrich Heine HBBe bk Every human being has a work to carry on within, duties to perform abroad, influences to exert, which are peculiarly his, and which no conscience but his own can teach. William Ellery Channing ■•You will find men who wont to be carried on the shoulders of others, who think that the world owes them a living. They don ' t seem to see that we must all lift together and pull together. Henry Ford II -n xVi. :- i!«i.i - ' .. =z!- ' i i Esasiai r 9 ! A J As we depart from Yeshiva University to pursue our careers, we can all begin to reflect on our experiences. Each of our experiences has no doubt been diverse, some leaving a greater impact on us than others. Still, of primary importance, there exists a CHUT HAMESHULASH, an unbreakable chain which bindi us together and has given us a reason to feel proud of having attended Yeshivo. The mognetic force of a Torah education has imbued within us o spirit and feeling of accomplishment of having been involved for four years in a religious experience. Though the particulars of our LIMUD may eventually be forgotten, the overall impact of these religious experiences give us a beacon to eventually sustain us as Torah Jews while pursuing our goals in life. A spark has recently been ignited and kindled in the hearts of every Yeshiva student. The Beit Hamidrash is constantly filled, both in the morning and at night, with hundreds of dedicated Yeshiva College students. This renewed faith has partially emerged from the inspiring force of two recent Milchamot in Eretz Yisroel. As Jews all over the world face situations which seem more and more impossible, our faith and trust in HASHEM increases. Jewish people all over have realized that our only hope to survival is with HASHEM, There is, therefore, no longer a feeling of mockery for the Masmid, (the diligent student, not the yearbook) but one of respect and admiration. Learning is on experience that we all realize will never leave us. This foundation of Toroh knowledge inculcated within us during college has imbued in us a spiritual and intellectual strength which will help us withstand the influence of time and which will beor fruit in a generation devoted to the traditions and ideals of our priceless heritage. Basketball did have its bright spots: the Macabees came in second place in the Manhattanville Tourney, and Rob Rosenbloom was named MVP. Paul Merlis was at his best this year leading the nation ' s small college ballplayers in field goal percentage. Bruce Wenig tied a 22-year old Y.U. record by gaining 15 assists against N.J.I.T. Paul was named to the All-Knick Conference second team and Bruce and Rosey received honorable mention. This year ' s fencers were better than their 7-3 record indicates, having lost a couple of heartbreakers this season. Morris Mandel, David Brusowankin, and Marc Felberbaum went to the NCAA. Although our guys did not make it to the semi-finals, Y.U. as a team accumulated enough points to place ahead of some of the top athletic factories in the country. RTS Wrestling had an easy 9-match schedule and piled up their usual win- ning record. Knowing that the fans no longer get excited by mere victo- ries, the grapplers proceeded to bring home the first-place trophy of the Metropolitan J.V. Tourney. Mitch Merlis led the team (8-1 , 1 3-1 including tourneys). The seniors, Jerry, Rick, Marty, and Jojo, all wrestled well. The basketball and hockey 76 ' ers (known this year as the seniors) did not bring home any trophies. In basketball, the Seniors won the spring term title, but lost to the Sophs in the championship game. Dove Beren led the team in most categories. The hockey team started slow and ended slow. That ' s what happens when the team ' s nucleus goes to Hebrew U. for a year. All three varsity squads will be hurt badly by graduation ' 76, and 1 976-77 will be a year of rebuilding. As for intramurais, the Class of ' 76 will be playing them in Med, Dent, or Low schools next year. Basketball I 34 44   • FRONT (L-R) — Lenny Schwartzbaum, Dave Mandel, Bob Gittleman.
