masmid 1975 maish yarmush editor-in-chief we came from diverse places and varied backgrounds, each of us iiad his own expectations of what he would accomplish during the college years, many came to yeshiva to discover the meaning of their heritage; others hoped to combine intensive Jewish studies with a college education, some weren ' t really sure why they had chosen y.u. yet despite this great diversity, during the past 4 years we all have had one thing in common — our shared experiences as part of the yeshiva community, the bonds of friendship which have developed from this sense of kinship over- shadow any differences in beliefs, attitudes, or goals that exist among us. it is these experiences and relationships that we take with us as we leave yeshiva. friendship needs a certain parallelism of life, a community of thought, a rivalry of aim. — henry adams attending one institution for 4 years will have an effect on most individuals; experiencing yeshiva for 4 years hias a profound influence on all of us. yeshiva has provided us with more than just an education — it has helped shape our lives, in many instances yeshiva did not live up to our expectations, but in the final analysis, the meaning the yeshiva experience was exactly what each of us made of it. whether we like it or not, our future developement will be the product of our successes and failures and these past years. i am part of all that i have met yet all experience is an arch wherethro ' gleams that unravell ' d world whose margin fades for ever and for ever when i move. — tennyson ?iaspects about ' m -: ' fest m )cper enc ai ' even after attending ' th|plnstitutiot|iQr 4 years, one can ' t i; lascertain what it really stands for. sure, we ' re. | fM familiar vjUi the p.r. image of yesfiiva 1 university, american Jewry ' s foremost insti- | itution of higher education. or get the best pf both worlds at yeshiva university. but somehow this madison ave. approach never iseemed compatible 4| ij Jt3 e Washington then there is th HHnitual ideal of yeshiva univers ' y ' i% V- lfJ in the development of the educational, spiritual, and cultural life of the american Jewish community, under the leadership of dr. belkin, this goal has been realized via a university-wide development and expansion program, however, many students have begun to ask: what price must we pay to be a national center of higher learning. is it really necessary to squander millions on a law school when the quality of education at yeshiva college is declining? there are no easy answers to these questions, hopefully, yeshiva will develop a philosophy that will enable it to balance the educational and spiritual needs of its students with the cultural needs of the Jewish community. build thee more stately mansions, my soul, as the swift seasons roll! leave thy low-vaulted past! let each new temple, nobler than the last, shut thee from heaven with a dome more vast, till thou at length art free, leaving thine outgrown shell by life ' s unresting sea! — Oliver wendell holmes life at yeshiva is filled with conceptual conflicts and dilemmas. This is typefied by the very name yeshiva college , can one institution be both a yeshiva and a college? thus the yeshiva experience is permeated with the tension between torah and madah. a student is not only required to combine an intensive Jewish studies program with a bulk load of college courses but is also expected to synthesize what he learns, students who succeeded on organizing their work properly and utilizing available time wisely attained the synthesis, it is they who derived the maximum benefit from the yeshiva experience. oh, but a man ' s reach shall exceed his grasp, or what ' s a heaven for? — robert browning for the average student, however, the concept of synthesis was just a pious dream, with only 24 hours a day, one couldn ' t devote himself fully to a double program and still have time left over to eat and sleep, students were therefore forced to establish a set of priorities, though some stressed judaic studies at the expense of their college courses, most individuals succumbed to ' the pressures of getting into graduate or professional school, before major exams, a student would rationalize that success in his future career compelled him to ' cut Jewish studies courses, this rationalization took many shapes — from cutting a rabbi ' s shiur to stabbing a classmate in the back, the system not only tolerated but also- encouraged these atti- tudes, the absence of proper spiritual and educational guidance contributed to an atmosphere of aimlessness. as a result, the once exalted ideal of a synthesis of torah and madah was, in reality, meaningless, exalted ideas of fancy require to be clothed in a suitable vesture of phrase. — aristophanes - i -iiM m w ' ,iitiiity aM «=K xvHMii r ' f ; mmnM iiiiiiiiin i ' ™ eless school, where we must , es that we may learn to live! : is he who memorizes s that leave no time for prayer. — thomas hardy basic dilemma facing the yeshiva stud .. . J isssaiaassiiSgfessMtfrfj ' M one of yeshiva ' s strong, or weak points, (depending on whom you ask) Is its religious divisions, commonly known as riets, emc, and jss, each division has a purpose and derech of Its own. riets Is the yeshivlsh program, where students learn gemorah till three in the afternoon, even within this religious division there are subdivisions, riets contains many types of bochurim, identifiable by religious outlook, attitude and appearance, many talmldim are extremely serious about limudei kodesh and emerge with a veldt of torah knowledge, (and sometimes even semlcha). there are talmldim who take full advantage of excellent rebbeim, many of whom are young yu graduates and relate well to the yu student, at night, the belt medrash Is full, probably more so than during the day. bochrim who go through riets have the opportunity to receive the finest education in limudei kodesh. however, there are some talmldim of riets who are proficient in only one tractate morning seder: actually the only seder, since there is no afternoon or evening seder, rav char- lop: director of riets and short hand champion of the bronx. attendance monitor: checks on your coming to the b ' m. pays to get him on your side. 9:15 this refers to sha ' os kaplanios not to the 60 minute hour, the amount of hours spent on kaplans the week before the boards is multiplied by the hours spent on bio and divided by the minutes spent learning and multi- plied by V2 the letters rav charlop sent to your parents, halacha I ' moso- lo mimolly: these ordin- ances are most severe in form and it has been ruled that they cannot be questioned, even by rav charlop. rav arnest: some say there was another part to his state- ment — i did not know there was a morning seder and, halvai, there should be no shiur today either , however it is generally agreed upon that, because of certain magayfos in his shiur, rav arnest became ex- tremely erratic and many of his sayings have been discounted, he suffered from hallucinations and one even stated that he saw talmidim taking off and letting out in shiur. moso o.notatana,amora, rishon, or achron, just a tractate joe med mistmali: from when must one be at morning seder? rav charlop says nine o-clock sharp, the attendance monitor is maykill, till 9:15. mosolo allows, bishas hadchak, till 9:30. others say one has till 8 hours after retiring, provided that one was studying for orgo. if one was busting for the boards, some even say, till 10 hours, a senior, even at 11:15, will not sign the late sheet. gemara: from where do we know there is a morning seder? rav charlop says it is helacha I ' mosolo mimolly and must be strictly adhered to. rav arnest says i did not know there was a morning seder , most bachurey heyeshiva agree, there is no seder in the yeshiva. acher says: i agree that there is a seder, but some cannot come because they are occupied with applications and kaplans. what is the penalty for not coming? rav kaplan rules. There is nothing wrong with not going to seder if you are confronted with boards, does it not say (pre-med handbook, 55B) One who is occupied with the boards, is potur from all else ? who is a true joe? rav doc says: one who will not sleep, eat, or talk, but will engage only in orgo. some say he must not even breath, most agree, there are no true joes left in the land. bimmy. orgo: commonly known as the yetzer hara. molly: rosh yeshiva of riets. senior: not related to the term semicha as referred to in maseches bums (21b) a senior, if he come to shiur twice a week is a tsadik. if he is in rav arnest ' s shiur, he is a tsadik if he just keeps his clothes on , acher: lit. something else, together with rav shmuel: the disciple of rav arnest. he exposed many talents in class, and went to great lengths to please his rebbi, although, because of his undue modesty, he denies it. kaplans: rival mokom limud. it generally takes away 30—40 stu- dents a year from riets, for periods of two to three months, its rosh yeshiva, rav kaplan, was put in cherem by many author- ities, but it was lifted when everyone started getting sick, and there was no one to cure them. joe: a talmid of rav kaplan. rav charlop disdains them but they disregard him and follow their own teachings, concerning morning seder, (maseches bums 74b) a cut at 9:00 saves time (and adds 15 points to the boards) no true joes: many however have tried, ajoegohmur is someone who reaches the highest pinnacle of joe- daism. may we be zoche to see the coming of joe moshiac with his 800 boards, amen. 10 the attitude of the student body concerning the academic program is as varied as the quality of the program itself, many students take their studies very seriously, and for good reason, the rewards are obvious: hard students are commonly troubled by gouts, catarrhes, rheums cachexia, bradypepsia, bad eyes, stone, and collick, crudieits ' oppilations, vertigo, winds, consumptions, and all such diseases as come by overmuch sitting, they are most part lean, dry, ill-colored, spend their fortunes, lose their wits, and many times their lives, and all through immoderate pains and extraordinary studies. — robert burton unfortunately, not all students are as dedicated, it is easy, in many cases, to see why. for example, it is difficult to get overly excited or educationally stimulated about a university department that boasts of a chairman, a senior professor and faculty all rolled into one, and not a very good one either. many students reacted by developing a hardened cynicism about education, others, in order to save their sanity, simply decided to stay away from class as much as possible. for reading new books is like eating new bread, one can bear it at first, but by gradual steps is brought to death ' s door by a mental dyspepsy. — James russell lowell when a test came along, there ' s always a simple solution. don ' t steal; thou shalt never thus compete successfully in business, cheat. — ambrose pierce first class term papers were never a problem, what is originality? undetected plagiarism. 12 B? ! - -m laiong wiin bottom half. Most students simply weren ' t interested in a liberal arts education; they had come to college to acquire pre-professional training, if one ' s objective was to get into a good graduate or professional school, then the ultimate goal of the college mission became piling up as many aces as possible, students simply assumed that it was impossible to get both good grades and a good education, in dealing with this supposed conflict between a liberal arts education and pre-professional training, a majority of individuals inevitably decided to devote their entire being to getting into graduate or professional school, in the process, they sacrificed not only the essence of the college experience but also an integral part of their personal developement. that shadow my likeness that goes to and fro seeking a livelihood, chattering, chaffering; how often i find myself standing and looking at where it flits. liberal education, viewed in itself, is simply the culturation of intellect as such, and its object is nothing more or less than intellectual excellence. — John henry newman college is supposedly an educational experi- ence, ideally, a liberal arts education should provide an individual with the knowledge and skills necessary to become a useful member of society, the educational process at yeshiva college left much to be desired in terms of reaching this ideal, most courses involved nothing more than an endless flow of facts from the instructor to the students, all that was needed to excel was the ability to memorize; critical analysis and original thought were often unsolicited, intellectuaiism was a phenomenon that was virtually non-existent, few students engaged in outside reading or in observing and learning from the world around them, for the most part, knowledge was confined to formal lectures and the assignments found in a printed syllabus. what we call education and culture is for the most part nothing but the substitution of reading for experience, of literature for life...... of absolute fiction for contemporary experience. — george bernard shaw to be a moral man is to obey the traditional maxims of your community without hesitation or discussion. — Charles s. pierce the clash of differing religious beliefs often marked the yeshiva scene, an ongoing battle existed between the frummie and the secularists , the frummies were the guardians of the values of a traditional yeshiva. they made certain that unyeshivish activities, such as beer blasts, never got off the ground, the secularists, on the other hand, maintained a more liberal religious outlook and thus promoted such social activities as blind-date parties, the two groups tended to tolerate each other and their differences did prompt many reli- gious discussions, a novelty for most members of both sides, consequently, campus life at yeshiva was unequally structured, any activity sponsored by a college organization or club was always constrained by consideration: this was not just any college but yeshiva college. it is peevish infirmity for a man to think himself so funny grounded that the contrary may not be believed. — michel de montaigne a large degree of an entering student ' s acadefriic success is based on lucl . the basic problem facing the yeshiva student is not the studying or hard work, it is simply: will joe freshie be lucky enough to get the key teachers, thereby enabling him to ace out and get into einstein with a 3.9: or will he meet disaster at the outset of his educational journey, and get ambushed with the killer professors? the most important aspect of orientation is that it enables the entering freshman to speak to sagacious seniors who give the straight facts about certain teachers. . . .to bear away upon their backs a burden of hook ... bodmin register ' not one amongst the doctors, as you ' ll see. Philemon The vanity of teaching oft tempts a man to forget he is a blockhead. lord halifax of course, we always managed to get the wrong english comp teacher or the bad news hebrew lit. professor while the other guy always ends up with the y.u. grad, a real fella. .there are, on the other hand, scores of professors at y.u. who will gladly answer a question out of context, or spend a few minutes after class with a student. scratch the green rind of a sapling, or wantonly twist it in the soil, and a scarred or crooked oak will tell of the act for centuries to come,, so it is with the teachings of youth, which makes impressions on the mind and heart that are to last forever. the highest function of the teacher consists not so much in imparting knowledge as in stimulating the pupil in its love and pursuit, to know how to suggest is the art of teaching. ramiel it is impossible to come to an overall conclusion as to the general quality of yeshiva ' s education, the range of teaching ability is as wide as the university budget gap. while certain departments are known for their general excellence, others do not deserve a place in the yeshiva university catalogue, it is hard to imagine more energy devoted by a teacher than that on the part of a certain speech department professor who s pends nights at y.u. perfecting the dramatics society presentations, it is also very difficult to conceive of a more relaxing class than that given by a certain english professor. - society is now one polished horde, formed of two mighty tribes, ■mm the bdres and the bored. there teachers who sit and lecture about differential equations, hi{ and 1 medulla oblongata with great dexterity, however, try ask] question which is not contained in their lecture notes ... ' that scholarship which consists in the memorization of facts, does not qualify one t ' ■— — •- • ' e dorm life lay aside the best book whenever you can go into the best company; and depend upon it, you change for the better. lord chesterfield one aspect of yeshiva university which cannot be measured by academic standards of dorm life, it is defmitely an education in itself call it the art of survival. both morg and rubin dorm- itories have their high spots while it is true that the walls in rubin are decidedly thin, it is not true that someone on the seventh floor can answer amen to a second floor resident ' s blessing — they both have to be on the same floor for that to work, the hot and cold water situation is just that — hot and cold, the fact that wind gusts over 15 m.p.h. tend to shatter the rubin windows also makes life interesting for rubin residents. mi jam S m V K im E3s ,;: w , ] .J - I f ' lE!: Ep WM l_ V § i lis i q iBi ■■ r v ' 81. morg, of course, is the luxury dorm, if a student can acquire a second floor room, he is key. if he gets a suite, he ' s either super l ey or the roomate of the student council president, the rooms in morg are larger, the heat hotter and the Johns safer, the t.v. room and floor lounges are fine for t.v. or lounging. morg, however, also has its unique problems, the beds do not move, are mostly wooden boards, and the matresses are covered by a sticky plastic that clings to your skin and makes you sweat, the food machines are hardly ever full, and when they are full, they ' re usually broken, morg residents have developed nervous twitches in their necks from constantly looking up in fear of flying water bombs. Sl however these hazards cannot outweigh the main les- son learnt from dorm life — that of developing lasting relationships and relating to different background and personality, maish weinstein from borough park and torah vodaath, and warren burke XVII from a denver day school and ncsy, soon become just a couple of yu roommates, and the best of friends, quite possibly, this is one of the most important accomplishments a student can hope for at yu. 22 hand grasps at hand, eye lights eye in good friendship, and great hearts expand, and grow one In the sense of this world ' s life. robert browning there are aspects of yeshiva life wfiichi can only be experienced as a dorm resident, wyur can only be heard fronn a dorm room if the transmitter Is not broken. It ' s much easier to get a stern girl ' s number in the dorm. — just jot down any number found In a dorm phone booth, there ' s not greater thrill than walking Into a darkened morg lounge and being surprised by an engagement celebration and having a bottle of champagne poured over your head, (so what if you ' re not the chasan). of course, if a student wants to get any serious studying done, or wants to get to sleep before 3:00 a.m., he ' d be better off staying home, card games, jam sessions can be heard till the wee hours of the morning, but the most important aspect Is the bond of friendship that is formed in the course of the four year residency at a yeshiva dormitory. keep thy friend under thy own life ' s key. Shakespeare 23 measure not dispatch by the times of sitting, but by the advancement of business. francis bacon one of the most unsettling aspects of the yeshiva experience was dealing with the administration, upon entering yeshiva college, one immediately comes into contact with the bureaucra- tic quagmire of the registrar ' s office, the registrar ' s office specializes in producing red tape and endless forms, during 4 years, virtually every student has had the opportunity to encounter the full range of imaginable mishaps — incorrect class— admit cards, erroneous computer printouts, fouled-up tran- scripts requests, and on and on. these difficulties are compounded by the uncooperative nature of many of the secretaries, indeed it is difficult to understand how rabbi edelstein, who always goes out of his way to assist students, was ever hired for a position in the registrar ' s office, his demeanor is totally incongruous with the lack of concern displayed by other personnel, the state of affairs in the registrar ' s office is symbolized by the construction of a wall partitioning students from office personnel. before i built a wall, I ' d ask to know, what i was walling in, or walling out. the average student has little association with the dean ' s office, those students who require the dean ' s approval for anything usually dealt with that all-knowing admin- istrative assistant, mrs. epstein. though few students had much contact with dr. bacon, everyone knew a great deal about him. there was universal disdain for both the dean ' s occasional sneakiness and for his constant, unyielding adherence to regulations, some students even gained the impression that the only word in the dean ' s vocabulary was no! yet there were times when dr. bacon actually did serve the stu- dent ' s interests, despite these in- stances, the dean ' s image as an arch-villain prevails. wronged shall be live, insulted o ' er, oppressed, who dares be less a villain than the rest. John wilmot 25 because of the intense pressure at yeshiva, students are forced to indulge in unique forms of relaxation, most imfamous among these is room 024, which is better known as jack schachnow ' s vice parlor. In addition to the pool tables, the numerous games of skill and chance provide thrills and adventure while gobbling up your quarters, a more conventional form of recreation is found in morg lounge, for those who find ping-pong dull, there is always the color t.v. the most exciting part of that activity was watching the fights develope over what to watch — the rangers, the knicks, or m a s,h . those students who find t.v. unintellectual participate in a more advanced form of letting off steam-the water fight. to be able to fill leisure intelligently is the last product of civilization. bertrand russel S ' ' ' ,X- -v ' N ' t !«  26 what is food for one man is bitter poison to others. — lucretius m H . B .A j . ff% k m £S ' 1 I K ' i - B m m there are certain everyday occurrences that nnanage to spice up the yeshiva experience, the various culinary concerns provide this service, if a person wanted to eat at the greasy spoon, an appropriately named luncheonette, he had to pay an arm and a leg for a meal, parker ' s cafeteria was much more reasonable, especially if you could stomach the specials, but a relationship developed— as prices went up, the size of portions went down, for the more adventurous individual, there was always chopsie ' s and mc dovids. those of us at yeshiva know that it was chopsie, not the arabs, who originated the oil crisis, after draining a slice of pizza, one could get started in the oil business, for the students with gourmet tastes, mc dovid ' s was the place where the delectable greaseburgers and cold pieces of chicken were served with that special touch — thrown at you. ' let them stew in their own grease. bismark 27 every library should try to be complete on something, if it were only in the history of penholes. —Oliver Wendell holmes the hectic atmosphere at yeshiva affects not only the life-styles of many students but also the functioning of various institutions. tal e the library, for example, for most of the semester the library rarely serves as a place of study or meditation; rather the library is merely utilized as a spot to relax between classes, however, when reading week arrives, the situation changes dramatically, students strive to catch up on all the outside readings they had neglected, some carry the additional burden of endeavoring to piece together a last-minute term-paper, the frenzied state of affairs reaches Its peak when a student has to frantically search for a good set of class notes, it is at this point that the library facilities really come in handy, for the yeshiva student, it is not the volumes of books which prove valuable but rather the photostat machines. the richest minds need not large libraries. — amos bronson alcott 29 there is no education like experience. outside of their dorm rooms, the classroom was the only place many -students could be found, the daily schedule for these students was always the same, study, study, study-and sometimes sleep and eat. there was no thought of involvement in school or outside activities, after all, there was that orgo test on friday, that bio quiz on Wednesday, and the boards were only IVi years away, once in a while these students might pick up a commentator and find out about the latest senate resolution, but that was it. these students, happily enough, were offset by those who took full advantage of the wide range of extracurricular activities offered them, these students would be found awake at four in the morning — not studying for finals but collecting copy for commie and hamevaser. the degree of involvement in outside activities at times overstepped the bounds of sanity, one station manager of wyur would never turn off his radio, and would only go to sleep after the station signed off. (3:00 a.m.) providing that the static had sounded good, one editor of masmid would spend nights sleeping in the yearbook office and would go weeks without touching food or water (or soap). many students involved themselves not only in school affairs, but in the affairs of the world around them, techiya and dirshu were founded and organized basically by yeshiva kids, rallies for Israel and soviet Jewry were initiated and attended to a large degree by yeshiva students, students gave up terms of college to work and study in Israel during the trying times of the yom kippur war. many students felt that a large portion of their education was attained not in the classroom, but through a radio broadcast, a governing board meeting or a soviet Jewry rally. 30 though varying wishes, hopes, and fears fever ' d the progress of these years, yet now, days, weel s, and months but seem the recollection of a dream. —sir waiter scott some will retain just a recollection of the years at yeshiva — reminiscences of learning about Judaism and its values or acquiring an understanding of new fields of knowledge, but if yeshiva has been successful, then more than just memories must remain with us. whatever our occupation, we can find time to devote to studying torah and to maintaining an aware- ness of the world around us. in this manner, the yeshiva experience will endure as a vibrant part of each of us. where is the heart that doth not keep within its innermost core, some fond remembrance hidden deep of things that are no more? — ellen c. howarth yesterday ' s dreams are tomorrow ' s sighs. —the moody blues the college years are a time of both accomplishment and frustration, whether to our benefit or detriment, the yeshiva experience has become a part of us. we have become accustomed to the unique attitudes and conditions which prevail at yeshiva. for most of us however, the future lies outside of the strict confines of yeshiva. hopefully, these past four years will have prepared us to enter a society not of our own making. what ' s past is prologue. —Shakespeare 31 ■: y .. i3i r. , ■■ i r. •■• «■ t.v . . , •■; ..V- ' , • «■■ f x :■ ' - ' y r ' H- ' hi r- gjqx xi. -•, p . l- ' « ' ' • K ' |Pfi- i p ' ■ ife P; .
