mmif HHW fiLJL ( 1, r L - li; 1 P m ' -%. A Hfl Soon they came upon a veritable giant straddling the road. Said Pilgrim, What mysterious figure looms before us? Verily an impressive person is he, for he greatly towers above us. As the figure approached, it exclaimed reading from a large book, Follow me through the wilderness; through this uncultivated land. Then said Pilgrim, How art thee called and from what dost thou quote? The giant replied. I am called Piety and I do quote from the wisdom of the ages. Then said Hypocrisy to Pilgrim, Learned Piety is one of the greatest of men to walk this path. Heed his words. Then said Piety, I welcome thee to this road of peace. This, my son, shall be thy guidebook, for it is the source of all knowledge. And I beheld that Piety gave to Pilgrim a most ancient volume and it was accepted gratefully. Piety spake unto Pilgrim. From whence dost thou come? Pilgrim replied, I come from the banks of indecision. Piety heaved a great sigh and began. You are fortunate, my son, for here you will find the Good Life. Upon this road you will learn how to conduct yourself. Thereupon Piety did turn to Hypocrisy and spoke with him quietly. Pilgrim stood aside unable to grasp Piety ' s whispered words. He did not know what to do with the script, for the words were written in a foreign tongue.

He continued down the road leaving his two companions behind. As Pilgrim pondered the strange letters, he chanced to raise his eyes only to find himself face to face with a horrible man who spoke in a rough tone. Why don ' t you watch your way? spake the stranger. Pilgrim replied, I am lost. The stranger an- swered, There is but one road to follow. But I have left my guide behind, said Pil- grim. The hideous figure replied, Then you must follow me! How art thee called? asked the Pilgrim. The man replied gruffly that his name was Arrogance. Pilgrim was coerced into following Arrogance, who never condescended to speak directly to Pilgrim, but rather spoke over his shoulder and out of the side of his mouth.
