The next morning, Pilgrim was awakened by a strange sound — the cry of a child. As he made his way to the source of the sound, he mused on its source. Perhaps another couple arrived at the inn during the night. But he was unprepared for the sight he beheld — there lay Worldly Wise — with a child nestled in her arms! Rejoice, bellowed Hypocrisy, for Worldly Wise has given birth to a child, and Synthesis is its name! The world is turned upside down, mused Pilgrim to himself, for he could not explain the strange occurrence which he had witnessed. I fear for my sanity. But the strangest thing was yet to come, for Piety grasped the child, and said to Pilgrim, here, take the child, and raise it as your own, for you shall be helpful for each other. And despite his pro- tests, the parents of the child insisted and pressed the child upon him. With mind still reeling, the Pilgrim returned to his room — the newborn child in his arms. However, the child proved of little help to Pilgrim, for its cries awakened him at all hours of the night, in the midst of his slumber. Pilgrim arose and spoke to Piety. Sir, Please take thy son back, for I am both unworthy and sorely in need of sleep. But Piety raised his hand, and spake thus, The child ' s needs and your own will not always agree, and with that, turned and left him holding the child. And what about the mutual benefit you spoke of earlier? But the figure disappeared and Pilgrim retired to his room.

The following day dawned bright and clear, but as the sun rose in the sky, the heat grew. The inn- keeper silently led the wedding party to a grove, where countless places had been set out in the heat of the day. Each seat, fash- ioned from wood, stood next to the other, like soldiers — row upon row. It seemed to Pilgrim that there were hundreds and hundreds of chairs. He asked Hypocrisy, Sir. I pray thee, an- swer my humble question, who is to fill these chairs? Here are the bride and the groom, but where are the guests for these chairs? And Hypocrisy turned to the Pil- grim, a fatherly glint in his eyes, and said. Do not worry my son. The guests will be provided for. The innkeeper led them to a large platform, which stood before them. And the platform was also made of wood, with a canopy of blue canvas. They mounted the steps and began the marriage ceremony. We ask the aid of Providence in granting happiness to these two children. May their offspring be as numerous as the sands on the beach of time With that, the party made their way back to the inn to enjoy the mar- riage repast.
