Thus, within a few short minutes, the room, which had previously resembled a dark, dry cave, now resembled a heathen swamp — together with the jungle sounds coming from the next room. Slowly, Pilgrim journeyed down the steps, and saw Hy- pocrisy, refreshed by long hours of sleep. Pray, tell me. how could you sleep through the noise and the storm which fills these rooms? Hypocrisy smiled. Why, I am staying at the inn across the road. There the rooms are large, quiet and clean. Yes, but I could not possibly afford such a luxurious room, cried the Pilgrim. But fool. smiled Hypocrisy, the rents are the same! The Pilgrim was beside himself in rage. He stormed over to the innkeeper. Sir. I demand a refund, for I am paying the same amount as my travelling companion and yet ■ the rooms are quite different! The innkeeper replied. My son. you area fool, for I must pay by the bed for the inn ' s accommodations, and so must you. ' I It

The following day dawned bright and clear, but as the sun rose in the sky, the heat grew. The inn- keeper silently led the wedding party to a grove, where countless places had been set out in the heat of the day. Each seat, fash- ioned from wood, stood next to the other, like soldiers — row upon row. It seemed to Pilgrim that there were hundreds and hundreds of chairs. He asked Hypocrisy, Sir. I pray thee, an- swer my humble question, who is to fill these chairs? Here are the bride and the groom, but where are the guests for these chairs? And Hypocrisy turned to the Pil- grim, a fatherly glint in his eyes, and said. Do not worry my son. The guests will be provided for. The innkeeper led them to a large platform, which stood before them. And the platform was also made of wood, with a canopy of blue canvas. They mounted the steps and began the marriage ceremony. We ask the aid of Providence in granting happiness to these two children. May their offspring be as numerous as the sands on the beach of time With that, the party made their way back to the inn to enjoy the mar- riage repast.
