As Pilgrim stumbled behind Arrogance, he lifted his head and observed a herd of cattle lowing in the grass. And as he drew near the herd he gasped in amazement, for the herd was of a most vivid crimson hue. Pilgrim stepped off the main road into the soft thick undergrowth where the cattle grazed. In a siege of bewilderment, Pilgrim lifted his doleful eyes and asked, To whom doth such a wondrous herd belong? Said Arrogance, Never mind whose property they are. They are here and that is all that matters. They were here before you arrived and they will be here long after you have gone. Your stay here is but a short one, yet your inquiries are endless, Pilgrim asked, But why have you brought me here? Arrogance replied, I am givingyou a cow. Then said Pilgrim, I have no need of a cow. Arrogance persisted, Thou shall accept what I give thee. Then asked Pilgrim, But I know not how to care for the beast. Yet Arrogance did give one of the herd to Pilgrim. And I saw that the animal caused much hard- ship for Pilgrim for it was stubborn. Thereupon Arrogance turned and left Pilgrim with his burden. As Pilgrim struggled to return to the road, he saw Hypocrisy approaching. Pilgrim wailed, Lo! I am troubled, for my bur- dens are many. Hypocrisy replied, There is no problem, for we will pull the beast along. I beheld that Hypocrisy stood aside and watched as Pilgrim led the cow down the winding path.

Pointing his finger. Pilgrim exclaimed, Behold, Hypocrisy, up ahead, what is that structure that blocketh the way? It surely is not like the obstacles we have encountered heretofore. It cannot be of natural creation for it is sharp, angular and lacks Artemis ' s graceful symmetry. I am hard put to it for I have travelled but little way and now to perceive yet another distress. Woe to me! Then said Hypocri- sy. Fear naught, for at the gates you shall learn what needs be done. The grotesque structure consisted of numerous chambers each occupied by various attendants. The buttresses and gargoyles seemed as superfluous and antiquated as the occupants themselves. Each chamber housed a useless sundial which consistently read ten minutes to the hour of five. I saw that the gatekeeper bore the name Incompetence.
