During the last few years, death has entered Yeshiva if not as a force or motivation, at least as a consideration. Before, there was simplicity. Graduate schools and a career followed logically from the college experience. Now the cloud of war has obscured not only graduate schools, but the whole future. Our decisions and plans must be tempered and shaped by the omnipresence of the draft. The pre-meds are the lucky ones: by the time they finish their protracted education, Viet-nam may be forgotten. The rabbinic students are also lucky: at least those who really planned on semicha are. The rest may regret their postponed goals: they may not. Safety they have gained: but what about intellectual honesty, peace of mind, morality? Situation ethics turn plans for the future into a series of strategems designed to help us stay out. One prays for ulcers, slipped discs, heart conditions, tuberculosis.
