Every Saturday night some of us took the A train down to Stern. Black, grimy, malodorous cars jouncing and bouncing our Shalosh Seudot stomachs about. With visions of grandeur and castles in the air we planned and schemed for a night of ecstasy. Some nights were disappointing, others happy — some even completely satisfying. Elevators disgorged girls, all forms and shapes of girls; red, yellow, green ones; pretty, unattractive, plain girls. Some girls were beautiful and ugly at the same time. We picked them up, brought them back, put on their coats for them, took them off, held the door open while they signed in and out, out and in, likesmilingautomatons. We — the brave ones — held hands with them in the lounge, but sneaked kisses around cold windy street corners. We saw our friends and met their girls: Hello, how do you do, pleased to meet you, how do you like New York, what ' s your major, where ' d you go, isn ' tthat nice, and all that. Finally; Boy meets girl, boy likes girl, girl likes 22 boy, boy and girl go steady, engage, and get married in Who ' s Whose.
