i - tT :- . : M. nM -v ! MASMID 7969 YESHIVA COLLEGE NEW YORK, NEW YORK Yeshiva ' s essence is eclectic. Composed of so many diverse elements, it presents varying images to different groups. Four years out of our twenty-one hiave been spent Inere; four years of fulfillment, frustration, enlightenment, and education. It is man ' s nature to comment on wfiat has been familiarto him: so it has always been; so it is with us. We have had the opportunity of living Yeshiva, indeed, of being Yeshiva. As the characters most completely immersed and involved in the Yeshiva scene, we feel qualified to comment on what Yeshiva is, and if not that, certainly on what Yeshiva has been to us. We know. We ' ve been there. What has it been? What has it meant? What have we made of Yeshiva? A warm, living, meaningful form of Judaism was expounded in certain classes — but honest effort was needed to benefit from such instruction. Those of us sincerely interested in strengthening religious feelings found here a source of knowledge and inspiration. Yet there were others, unwilling, unable — uninterested. For them it was sufficient to go through the motions of cramming facts into their heads and regurgitating them into examination booklets. Some sought knowledge, others— grades, and yet others — nothing. To each of us Yeshiva meant just what he wanted to make of it. If we are to share the credit for our academic success, we must also accept our share of the blame for what failures we have suffered at the hands and minds of Yeshiva. Yeshiva ' s idea of synthesis is to combine a half day of intensive Jewish studies with a full load of college courses. Assumingthat the average student can, somehow, succeed in school under this burden, what of the effect on his personal philosophy? To whom should he turn for guidance, his religious studies teacher or his college professor? In answer to any specific problem one might be given advice ranging from the most unyieldingtraditionalism to the most liberal rationalism. This, then, is the fallacy behind Public Relations ' claim to synthesis — no unified, workable and cogent philosophy of synthesis exists. Until one is formulated, Yeshiva will be but a spiritual and intellectual cafeteria, where one may pick that which suits him best. During our time here Yeshiva has expanded. Yet, even within the narrow context of Yeshiva, the word expansion is metaphorical. Does it aggrandize the University ' s name at the cost of subverting the Yeshiva, or does it bring badly needed money at the expense of harming the college? Doubtless it does both in varying degrees. Regardless of which is its most salient effect, expansion has become an integral part of our Yeshiva experience. We have welcomed it and opposed it; welcomed it when it seemingly made Yeshiva a better place to learn and grow, opposed it when the growth appeared uncontrollable and pointless. The crossroads have been reached; growth without purpose, consolidation and foresight must be checked. Yeshiva will grow; of that we are certain. Perhaps the growth will lead in the direction of new spiritual and educational heights — perhaps not. There are difficulties involved in managing a Yeshiva University administration. Complaining students, unimaginable heaps of paperwork and a general lack of facilities make life miserable for countless secretaries and administrators. From the students ' point of view, however, the Administration is often more than justifiably uncooperative. The outdated bulletin boards, the fouled up transcript requests, the bureaucracy, the occasional sneakiness, the paternalism, the well-intentioned bumbling, the unyielding and unprogressive regulations, the red tape— these are our impressions of the Yeshiva administration. Yet each of us has experienced some moment when an administrator or secretary went out of his or her way to get us into a closed section, clear us with our draft board, or expedite matters through some mysterious high-echelon channel. Though we realize that the Administration under its present circumstances could not be much different from what it is, our feelings remain, at best, ambivalent. Take eight hundred young males and place them in the synthetic atmosphere of Yeshiva, mix in unequal portions of pressure, minyan, alienation, and Cousin Brucie, and a sketchy image of dorm life emerges. Add monumental waterfights, overly-conscientious dorm counsellors, overcrowded rooms, twanging guitars, and the most obstreperous maids in the world. A more f- definite picture of the Y.U. dorm appears. t Dorming, like the rest of Yeshiva life, was a study in contrasts. A typical evening might begin with the cooperative fudging of an overdue term paper, go on to a heated discussion of contemporary mores and culminate in the difficult choice of Carson over The Late Show. Yet something emerged from the disjointed scene — the relationships formed during our stay at Yeshiva. Living with friends, helpingthem resolve personal crises, and sharing in their joys was a collective experience that elevated Yeshiva life from the strictly academic. The Yeshiva dorm breeds pressure as naturally as its alternative, the Washington Heights apartment, breeds roaches. No one who experienced it will ever forget having spent the night before a major exam in the dorm. The hectic, often panic-ridden waking nightmare, with its arsenal of sleep fighters — coffee. No Doz, Verve, Murine, tooth picks, cigarettes — the sight of dawn ushering in doom, the desperate last minute cramming, the dejected walk across Amsterdam Avenue towards the inevitable. In our pressure-filled life, we sought release, we sought temporary amnesia, temporary freedom, escape from the oppressive heaviness of classes, tests, and restrictions. We are alive and we shall prove it! Thus we plunge into the twilight world of New York outside Yeshiva: museums, bimbos, Broadway, Central Park, the Village— an existence of which many of us were unaware. The world, the people, with neon the saving grace, preventing blackness from dominating — neon allowing us to stay awake and visit outside. Every Saturday night some of us took the A train down to Stern. Black, grimy, malodorous cars jouncing and bouncing our Shalosh Seudot stomachs about. With visions of grandeur and castles in the air we planned and schemed for a night of ecstasy. Some nights were disappointing, others happy — some even completely satisfying. Elevators disgorged girls, all forms and shapes of girls; red, yellow, green ones; pretty, unattractive, plain girls. Some girls were beautiful and ugly at the same time. We picked them up, brought them back, put on their coats for them, took them off, held the door open while they signed in and out, out and in, likesmilingautomatons. We — the brave ones — held hands with them in the lounge, but sneaked kisses around cold windy street corners. We saw our friends and met their girls: Hello, how do you do, pleased to meet you, how do you like New York, what ' s your major, where ' d you go, isn ' tthat nice, and all that. Finally; Boy meets girl, boy likes girl, girl likes 22 boy, boy and girl go steady, engage, and get married in Who ' s Whose. g , «,.t„!f„ M ■mmf ' «k. «• - - •-«ifar- 5ff%«S .,. .% z • ' - ' v.%: ' ' f . 1 ' ' -r., M-- Yet there were moments that made the whole routine worthwhile. One special person entered and suddenly gamesceased, barriers lifted, all made way before the warm glow of real communication. Onetouch, one smile, and life took on a new direction, a new dimension. And this, too, was part of Yeshiva. nlElf During the last few years, death has entered Yeshiva if not as a force or motivation, at least as a consideration. Before, there was simplicity. Graduate schools and a career followed logically from the college experience. Now the cloud of war has obscured not only graduate schools, but the whole future. Our decisions and plans must be tempered and shaped by the omnipresence of the draft. The pre-meds are the lucky ones: by the time they finish their protracted education, Viet-nam may be forgotten. The rabbinic students are also lucky: at least those who really planned on semicha are. The rest may regret their postponed goals: they may not. Safety they have gained: but what about intellectual honesty, peace of mind, morality? Situation ethics turn plans for the future into a series of strategems designed to help us stay out. One prays for ulcers, slipped discs, heart conditions, tuberculosis. And through it all, one fears.  o«iv ' uNiy  n nt 1« ' Sytt «- ' ' V . ■— -.-• ' .r at the n . ■in fl2 tha beglonltt oi • ' ,. indicated below (r« th« counte , th i office prmptly. Our view of the world is not reactionary, yet it has asserted itself in ways not common to the American college scene. We are not the Yeshiva administration, nor are we the Columbia student body. Our riots are big, friendly, rambunctious water fights. We throw toilet tissue out the windows and yell Josh must go! but all we want is less pressure on our psyches and the end of a cenozoic educational process. We are different, but not afraid; we have been sheltered, but not made unaware. The pressures which affected our countrymen and co-religionists have also affected us, if to a somewhat lesser degree. Some of us transcended the pervasive spirit of anonymity and indifference which heretofore marked our campus. Some tried to improve the world, to shape it to their varied ideals. We are prepared to enter a society not of our own making, though not to worship at the shrine of others ' conception. Guarded and guided by our principles, we shall survive, and, perhaps, prevail. It is somewhat amazing that the frailties and failings of Yeshiva most characterize the school to the students, while its unique as- sets often go disregarded. Yeshiva ' s approach may be a solution to many problems faced by the American Jewish community. Perhaps it is our appreciation of this potential, combined with an intimate knowledge of Yeshiva reality that makes us such unabashed critics. For what Yeshiva does, we are grateful and appreciative; for what it could but does not do, we are disappointed and disgusted. We are jealous of Yeshiva ' s pride and reputation, for it is ours. Certainly Yeshiva has not achieved a true synthesis, but it has tried. In some cases it has come close. Thus, many unique attitudes and conditions pre vail at Yeshiva. These remain with us. To live as a Jew, one must be trained and conditioned to appreciate Judaism and Jewish values. We have so been trained and conditioned. If this sounds sentimental, so be it. One cannot attend any institution, certainly not brie as insulated as ours, Vithout developing lasting ties and associa- tions, deep feelings and memories. Our lives were shaped here at Ye- shiva, pertiaps to our detriment but more probably to our ' great benefit. Weleave Yeshiva, aware of its shortcomings, yet grateful. ., . Rj5ji,r;si w - . ' ' ' ' •i i Jl l ' pSf c -. • • , , Dedication Oh hi A warm simple part of the phenomena that carries one through the weeks of stress and frenzy that surround the Yeshiva experience. Friendship- the singular allegiance here that tempers cold academics and personal disappointments, makingthings more relevant, more tolerable. The lonely hours. Walking to the library in the cold late evening or sulking at a fluorescent-lit desk in the dorm. It is the only remedy that heals the tension, and restlessness. Gary has helped make our experience at Yeshiva rewarding and though beset with his own malaise, he is always there; there to listen to our embarrassing personal and financial problems, there to offer advice when things look bad, there to secure employment for us when the deadline was two weeks past. His conversation, guidance, and humor are part of us. Dissatisfaction or depression cannot escape his scrutiny. His sensitive words challenge a drawn face, and somehow things are better. At his office, in the dormitory, walking down Amsterdam Avenue, Gary is a very close friend to all of us. Gary L. Kornspan Assistant To The Director Of Student Finances. 1 ff Dr. Samuel Belkin Yeshiva University, since the time of its inception, has been seen by its leadership as a confrontation between the old and the new. Many were the skeptics who foresaw that the conflict arising from the head-on collision of secularism and traditional Judaism would mean disaster for the fledgling institution. Yet, Yeshiva has grown from its humble beginnings in a manner that has surprised even the optimists. Certainly, the major factor in this growth has been Dr. Samuel Belkin. Since 1943. when he assumed leadership, Dr. Belkin has directed a program of expansion that has made Yeshiva a major reality on the American Jewish scene . He has directly influenced the lives of thousands of students by assuring that the philosophy and guidance they encountered at Yeshiva remained unwaveringly within the bounds of Daas Torah. Every decision made at Yeshiva. no matter how minor, bears the imprint of his guiding hand; everything that Yeshiva is today, we owe to him. It is thus with respect and gratitude that we note the twenty fifth anniversary of his Presidency. NORMAN B. ABRAMS To those students who didn ' t know him well, he was a distant and powerful figure. But the vast majority of students and alumni recog- nized him as one who was genuinely interested in the welfare of the talmidei hayeshivah. He had the reputation of being one of the most dedicated members of the administration and — while not one of their own — a true friend of all the roshei hayeshivah. He took special interest in encouraging promising students in RIETS to go into chinuch after receiving ordination. Today some of them are among the most successful Jewish educators in America. Al- though students tend to remember the many incidents through the years when he seemed a harsh disciplinarian, upon reflection many realize his concern for their problems. A close friend of Dr. Belkin, he had a significant role in shaping YU and RIETS. During his over forty years of service to the University, he rose from secretary in Tl to Administrative Director of RIETS. He went about his work in a diligent, quiet, and unglorified manner. He did not seek honor nor pursue prestige. His testimonial is the memory students will always have of his love of Torah and devotion to Yeshiva. DR. ALEXANDER BRODY It would be presumptuous to attempt listing all of Dr. Alexander Brody ' s academic achievements. An eminent social scientist, he was of nationwide reputation in such diverse fields as economics, history, law and biblical scholarship. Yet, overshadowing his professional acclaim were his personal characteristics. He was a sincere and humble man. He thought of others at times when others thought only of themselves. He al- ways stuck to his ideals, even ' to the point of rejecting material ad- vancement. At his funeral certain images came to mind: a frail and sickly teacher lecturing after having spent the morning in treatment for his fatal illness; a professor being personally affronted by a freshman who did not know that saving equals investment; a counsellor ad- vising his troubled student, that ' s right, young man. Of Dr. Brody it can be said that he was an ethical model, reminis- cent of a gentle age, an age gone by and unlikely to appear again in our complex, troubled world. Mr. Norman Abrams of blessed memory. Dr. Alexander Brody of blessed memory. Philip Lieberman of blessed memory The Philip Lieberman IVIemorial Award is presented by the graduating class to the senior it considers highest in character and personality and who has offered outstanding service to his class. This year, the class of 1969 has chosen Kenneth N. Main of Danville, Virginia, as the recipient. A RIETS student majoring in English, Kenny was elected President of Yeshiva College Student Council during a crucial period of transition for students in general and Yeshiva stu- dents in particular. Equipped with a keen, sensitive mind and a natural ability for leadership, Kenny was highly qualified to lead our struggle for an increased student voice in University affairs. The Class of ' 69 is certain that his abilities will carry Kenny to a role of leadership in the American Jewish Community. The lights reflect on the polished hardwood floor. The mood is tense; the game is about to begin. The noisy camaraderie in the stands turns into electric silence. Theopeningtap . . . Let ' s go Yeshiva . . . Get that bail. Come on. Come on! COME ON!!! Please!? Put it in! Foul, ref, foul! Put it in! Let ' s go Yeshiva! No, no!! GiveittoStuie! No, give it to Richie!! Pull it Ray! Okay, Dave! Dammit!! This morningthey were in class; last night they travelled forty-five minutes to practice. Now they ' re out there, sweating and bleedingand fighting and cursing. rrH. ' An individual contest of strength. You against Inim. But you knowyou ' re not alone because there are two hundred people yellingtheir hearts out . . . pulling foryou. It makes it a little easier knowing they feel it when you hurt and they glory in your victory. It makes it a little easier. For years now, they ' ve had the best record of any team in the school. And nobody even under- stands the sport. At- tack parried; riposte off target. Nothing done. And they still draw crowds who applaud politely while the direc- tor recites the esoteric jargon. And they keep winning. Sarachek, Tauber, and Steinberg. The big 3 of Yeshiva athletics. Sarachek curses and suffers and Steinberg screams and suffers and Tauber sits stolidly and suffers. They all care and that means one hell of a lot. Among the stock phrases one might hear at any Yeshiva College athletic event is one coined by followers of the old Brooklyn Dodgers— Wait till next year! That phrase, taken in conjunction with the traditional If only . . . effectively sums up the past athletic year. This is not to suggest that the season was not replete with success, in varying degree, for each of the various varsity teams; it certainly was. The salient impression to be gleaned from a quick review of the records, however, is that with a little more luck this could have been the most impressive season in the history of Yeshiva ' s sports program. A perfect example of the mixture of glory and grief wfiich attended the varsity teams was reflected in the wrestling team ' s spectacular success and heart-breaking descent. The first wrestling team in Yeshiva history to compile a winning record and to take a national tour, the Steinbergers had their season marred by defeats at the hands of their two bitterest rivals, City and Brandeis. The basketball team, hurt by the absence of sidelined senior Ray Aboff. staggered through the season under- manned and overworked, but still managed to pull out some exciting and ex- ceptional victories, includ- ing upsets over City and Queens. Most encouraging was the predominance of lower classmen on the team. Coach Sarachek hopes to have six lettermen back next season, making it the next year year. The fencing team was simply unable to improve on the excellent performance of the previous season ' s squad. Despite this, the fencers compiled the best record of any varsity team, and capped the season with a victory over the erstwhile undefeated New England Conference champions, Brandeis. Sports at Yeshiva. A contradiction in terms? A paradox? A necessity? Who knows? But to those who care each game becomes more than a game. No one gets that excited at a game. A game doesn ' t mean that much. There must be more to it. There is. Those are our triends out there; they sat next to us in Art 1 and they sat in on communal T.I. homework sessions. They ' re not the jocks you find on other campuses. They are an extension of ourselves. They play for us and we cheer for them and we are all one — Yeshiva. When they care that much, we care a little more. Guys who play ball, guys who go to games, guys who sweat out their guts on the mats, guys who lose their voices screaming, trying, somehow, to add an ounce of strength or accuracy or desire. ' M n m n 9 H S ■i 9b ' M N B| b hf 1 The straining muscles of the tired athletes. The hoarse voices and twisted faces of the fans. No training, no prac- tice, no facilities . . . but, most important, no lack of guts. When they ' ve got nothing left, they give a little more; some- times it ' s enough to win. Sometimes it ' s not. Under the leader- ship of third degree blackbelt Harvey Sober, the club has produced eight purple belts, twelve green belts, and six yellow belts. Mr. Sober, who won the Eastern Seaboard Kempo Style Karate cham- pionship in 1961, has taught the students all the basic forms of the martial art stress- ing the idea that defense of one ' s body is of utmost sig- nificance. Marvin Srulowitz Student Council The achievements of Student Council in 1968-69 marked the beginning of a new era at Yeshiva College. As campuses throughout the world erupted in revolt, YCSC ' s skillful effort restructured the College and dramatically altered the role of students in University affairs without violent protest. The year began auspiciously with a mass grievance meeting on May 22, 1968, following a hectic night that dampened the illusions of certain administrators (see pp. 30-31). Many demands were transformed into innovations and changes in University structures and proce- dures. Under the dynamic leadership of President Ham, a drive to involve students in facility and curriculum planning met with much success. Students were added as voting members to all policy committees. And perhaps the most significant step in YU ' s history was taken — a Col- lege Senate was established. This development signified a completely new approach to stu- dent demands by redefining the student ' s role in the College ' s policy-making process. Deci- sions of the most critical concern to students can now be reached by democratic means. The establishment of a powerful College Senate was all the more remarkable because of the positive attitude with which it was accepted on all levels of the University. That students are now regarded as responsible and mature partners in the YU structure is an achievement of the Yeshiva College Student Council that should be regarded as a legacy of historically grand proportions. The Corps was designed to send Y.U. volunteers into neighborhood schools to tutor and work there with problem students coming from underpriviledged backgrounds. The unique advantage of the program was a one-to-one relationship, a set-up that allowed for the development of deep mutual affection and friendship within the teaching process. This year the Youth Corps has expanded incredibly to 107 members working in two schools. Next year will see the expansion of the Youth Corps into a third school, as well as the start of an adult education program here at Yeshiva. In two short years the Youth Corps has gained the respect and trust of both children and adults in the community. It has shown that its goal of a dynamic Washington Heights community based on trust and cooperation with Yeshiva is no idle dream. Y.U. NEIGHBORHOOD YOUTH CORPS left to right: Gary Quinn. Today, after five fine productions — each more successful than the one before — the society has become one of the most highly respected and admired school organizations. Through the dedication and talents of Anthony S. Beukas. faculty advisor and director of the group, excellence and professionalism became hallmarks for Yeshiva produc- tions. Beginning with Home of the Brave presented in the spring of 1967, then Incident at Vichy and Oliver during the 1967-68 year, the Dramatics Society assembled and re- fined the various facilities necessary to good theatre. During this period, acting tech- niques were emphasized and developed. The 1968-69 season with Billy Budd in the fall and Love, Love, Love, (3 one act plays), in the spring continued with this emphasis but with the addition of more complex and elaborate set designs. That the Society performed frequently for organizations other than the college is a measure of its increasing popularity. SUSSMAN FRO M YOUR PARENTS We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time Through the unknown, remembered gate When the last of earth left to discover Is that which was the beginning; At the source of the longest river The voice of the hidden waterfall And the children of the apple tree Not known, because not looked for But heard, half heard, in the stillness Between two waves of the sea Quick now, here, now always — A condition of complete simplicity (Costing not less then everything) And all shall be well and All manner of thing shall be well When the tongues of flame are in-folded Into the crowned knot of fire And the fire and the rose are one. ' ,c jasj - ? ;n-v My Dear Friends, Graduation is at once a joyous time and a time for sober reflections. We have successfully completed one important phase of academic development and w e are eager to meet the challenge of the future. Graduation is also — and ap- propriately — a time to pause and ponder lessons learned and mistakes unrectified. Olive Schreiner put it this way in The Lost Joy: At last they came to where Reflection sits, that strange woman who had always one elbow on her knee, and her chin in her hand and who steals light from the past to shed it on the future. And indeed our education at Yeshiva will enable us to take the light of Torah and illuminate the future. This is our strength and insurance in this Pecksniffian world. Congratulations to the entire class and my best wishes always. r President, EMCSC CJCN 1D21 .nnc- IS n-ic:!: nr- ' cn ijjyc ' ? s- 1922 n3t ' 3 imc? is-2 Tsr: .3X3 ij ' b n n .in:tJ ' no3 ,Ti3Di nans ' ? c ' 3itn c j3„3 ■' 7 ir n i:s ' nn3t lyn nr n an : ■J03 .njam nanyn sirun ' nn ms ' ?v c y ' ? s ' i- c cmcDn Tcn:} ,vt: ' vr: ' 733 i-nr: pyai mnnsn ' pcja nmti ' o C13D7 ' i ' jrB T-cn T ni 3itDn n-u ' iyn nti ' vi pms y3D menus ' ? n3t ]3 ;n3 .inn .pixn ;v ' .2 i m iysn IS nznr; c ' ?v; ' 7 r c ' Jn: T ' n ,iy3i3D uy ■.mr r;nn .innocnn .nnnsn y nmta iJ nn yn n3 ' ' ti ' ' 3 innstrc,, ] ' ;a ' 7 nnionn Cipc ' 737 . But to most of us. she has been the inspiration that guided our way through four years of Erna Michael Col- lege. Her keen wit and touching humor brightened many a day that seemed to be folding down upon us. Whether the problem was academic, administrative or even personal, she left no stone unturned to help out. Her every move is guided by the effect it will have on the fel- las in T.I.: sincerity is her trademark. Seeking no glory nor personal advance- ment for herself, she has always displayed the same concern for each individual in both the old administration and the new. Her pen has served as the tempering scepter dispens- ing a touch of mercy after the justice has been handed down next door. When, in future years, we recall Erna Michael College, we will think with fondness of her, the woman to whom we dedicate this section, with profound admiration and utmost appreciation — SARAH MEYER m dtmMM RAY MARVIN M.
