4i Ittb Ule hiva. K olleai r mmi ' i V DR. HYMAN B. GRINSTEIN To a man ivho has dedicated himself with absolute kindness. sincerity, love and compassion to instilling these same qualities in us, his students. To a man whose constant devotion to, and interest in our affairs has endowed them with worth and meaning. To a man ■who has never been too busy or felt it beneath his dignity to provide moral or material support to a student in difficulty. To Dr. Hyman B. Grinstein We Dedicate this Masmid, with heartfelt affection, with deep-seated respect, and most of all with our thanks. r-2 ri c fc k KVni • . ,; .? , J .. ! •-• ' •■•- Z yW j « $ V i fc Hft. ; ■ - ■ ts ! gjss ,  r J ■ ' . « , ■ • .Tk ! w ,, :Vo- S jMPB v « M ■ -•£ •%,•■  £ U-JllM sW- But we shall Step from Spire to star, and ■ ■ ill i III Star to universe .-.«••,• i ' • ; ' r 2 ,?i 4 ' i %!•« •« r 32 „ w 3n fflemaxmm Rabbi Moshe A. OFFICE OF THE ' « ' «• LI To the Yeshiva College Class of 1967: I am pleased to extend my sincerest congratulations to the Yeshiva College Class of 1967. May you have every success in your future endeavors. Yeshiva College stands as the embodiment of a concept at the heart of our faith: theory must be translated into practice, learning must lead to ethical conduct based upon the Divine laws of Torah. The pursuit of knowledge is fruitless unless it relates to the world around us. Without moral guidelines and constraints, life cannot achieve the spiritual fulfillment of which our sages spoke . Here you have studied the traditional disciplines of the yeshiva and the college, the teachings of Judaism and the liberal arts and sciences. More than this, you have experienced this duality so intensely that all elements merge into a unified approach to life . I trust that you will continue to grow from strength to strength in the consecrated service of our people and the further development of your innate capacities. Sincerely yours, 4 «  . 3 Samuel Belkin President June 12, 1967 13 Y E S H I VA UNIVERSITY YESHIVA COLLEGE id 186th Street New York, N.Y, 10033 (212) LOrraine 8-8400 OFFICE OF THE DEAN TO THE CLASS OF 1967 You had the privilege of living for four years in an atmosphere which fosters exchange of ideas and self -generated inquiry. The unique aspect of your education at Yeshiva College was that, in addition to majoring in one of the subjects traditional in an American liberal arts college, every one of you also took a major in the humanities in the form of Jewish studies, constituting at least one half of your total program. This dual program helped to sharpen your intellectual acuity and to raise the limits of your potential. The special nature of your morning studies reinforced by those in the afternoon deepened your moral, ethical and philosophical insights, broadened your attitudes, and, thus, conditioned you for a richer and more fruitful life. As you, members of the 36th graduating class, leave the sacred halls of Yeshiva, the best wishes of the faculty and the administration go with you. I hope that whether you be far or near you will always retain interest in your Alma Mater and her concerns, and I wish each and every one of you farewell in the sense that you may truly fare well. LITERATURE AND AWARDS EPHRAIM AND SARAH FLEISHER MEMORIAL AWARD JDB, THE HOLOCAUST MM: The Dilemma of Job in the Literature of the Holocaust by Richard E. Kaufman I How I sympathized with Job! I did not deny God s existence, but 1 doubted his absolute justice, ' ' cries Elie Wiesel in his lyric, haunting memoir of the Holocaust, Night. Throughout the history of thought the Job figure has served as the paradigm of the alienated man. Job is the archetypal image of man engulfed by his insignificance in the cosmos. He is the man from whom God has turned away, leaving between them only the infinite chasm of invulnerable silence. In modern times the Job figure has realized a unique relevance, for with the advent of the Third Reich and the slaughter of European Jewry Job takes on a new aspect: that of the Holocaust man. When Job cries out in anguish: If indeed you wish to quarrel with me and justify the humiliation I have suffered Know then t hat God has subverted my cause and surrounded me with his siegeworks. Behold, I cry ' Violence! but I am not answered; I call out but there is no justice. 2 (19:5-7) the cry is that of the victim of greatest of modern tragedies — the Holocaust man. He stands fearfully alone. His possessions stolen, his children killed, all that is left him — an illness-ravaged body, a soul that can no longer find joy in existence — cries out in pain. But that which began as a cry of pain swiftly begins to metamorphose: from the cries come the questions — the search for a rationale. Why? How? Why has God afficted man with such evil? How could there exist even the possibilities of such redoubtable evil in the presence of a God of divine justice? Unable to find the answers within himself, or in an alien natural order, our Holocaust man ' s cry metamorphoses further — it becomes an accusa- tion, a rebellion: I am blameless — I am beside myself — I loathe my life. It is all one — I say — The blameless and the wicked he destroys alike. When disaster brings sudden death He mocks the plea of the innocent. The land is given over to the hand of the evildoer who is able to bribe the judges. not He who then is guilty? 3 (9:21-4) With the accusation comes the challenge: if God is not guilty then let him come forth and explain this incalcul- able evil to man. If He has inflicted some punishment upon man with Not even then consciousness of crime to comfort him — the rags of reason 4 then, in the face of man s challenge, it becomes more than God s prerogative, it becomes his divine duty — as the God of absolute justice — to give at least some hint of a reason behind the horror he has made man bear. Job, as it were, commands God to explain himself to man. And the explanation, if it is to be had at all, must be for all Jobs, for all Holocaust men; it must be for all time — as long as the conscience and consciousness of man must cope with the problem of theodicy. In the cry for justification of his singular afflic- tion, Job — the Holocaust man — at the same time cries out for, demands, justification for the collective woe. Justify! Justify the death of six million! Let us know that there is a divine justice! What comes, however, is not a divinity, but men convinced of the power of pure reason to explain the order of the world: Job ' s comforters. In response to Job ' s anguish- ridden pleas they offer him standard theological banalities, all of which do little more than exacerbate Job ' s anguish. In their failure to convince, the friends become accusers, but this time it is Job who is accused. Since God is just. Job would not be allowed to suffer for no reason; he 129 must then, a priori, be guilty of some hidden sin. How- ever, in the face of Jot ' s character — even God speaks of him as a man blameless and upright, fearing God and avoiding evil (1:8) — the accuser- friends know their argu- ment is not enough. They must look elsewhere to explain man ' s suffering. II Each of the friends must explain or attempt to ex- plain, in God s stead, the natural order. Because they are men and not Gods, their answers, if they are to be more than metaphysical speculations, must be both intel- lectually defensible and pragmatically tenable. They must explain rationally how man can live with a Holocaust burdening his soul. They must explain how God might allow the impossibilities of the Holocaust, not only to become possibilities, but realities. For Eliphaz, the first to speak, the answer seems simple. The problem of evil has nothing to do with God, it is purely a human invention, and, as the progenitors of this evil, we must be prepared to suffer for it. If it seems, he goes on, that too often the victims of evil are the righteous, it is because man, by virtue of his humanity, cannot be perfect before God. Bildad, however, unable to refute Job s picture of injustice rampant everywhere in the life of man . . . takes refuge in an eloquent descrip- tion of the glory and power of God as manifest in the process of Nature. 5 And Zophar, unable to muster up even the semblance of intellectual force, retreats into describing the lot of the evil-doer. The answers of both Bildad and Zophar have no real significance for a Job, biblical or modern. Bildad s bucolic can explain little to a spiritually debilitated Job. On the contrary, it is because we are so steeped in the meaning of God ' s glory that we are compelled to ask: Who are You, my God, compared to this afflicted crowd, proclaiming to You their faith, their anger, their revolt? What does your greatness mean Lord of the Universe, in the face of all this weakness, this decomposition, and this decay? Why do You still trouble their sick minds, their crippled bodies? 6 Zophar says even less than Bildad, for we know that evil-doers suffer, but that does little to account for the suffering of the rigliteous. Job ' s question remains yet unanswered. Of the first three comforters, it is Eliphaz who, on the surface at least, presents the most appealing argument. Even this, however, will not suffice, for assuming man to be the creator of evil, God is still the creator of man — of every facet of man including his propensity for evil. But it is not only the philosophical mechanics of Eliphaz ' s argument that one finds objectionable, it is the Weff- anschauung that a rationale such as this implies. The implication is one that rings familiar; it comes right out of the Eichmann in Jerusalem 7 controversy. W ' hat Eliphaz intimates is that man is the cause of his own destruction and his sufferings are little more than the just deserts of his natural tendencies. This is only a syllogistic step away from the terrifying self-indictment of some of our Holocaust survivors. It is only a step away from saying of the Holocaust, as Hannah Arendt has, that the role of the Jewish leaders in the destruction of their own people is undoubtedly the darkest chapter of the whole dark story. Eliphaz ' s argument at its most elementary level, and at the diabolical conclusion to which Miss Arendt has carried it. must be rejected on all grounds. It is untenable intellectually, pragmatically and, perhaps in this case most importantly, emotionally. The three comforters have done and have failed. It is at this point that Elihu. a fourth friend, appears on the scene. Of all Job ' s friends it is Elihu alone who adumbrates what I believe to be the answer implied in the theophany. Behold, all these things does God do twice — yes, three times — with a man to bring him back from the pit that he mav bask in the light of life (33:29-30) For Elihu the existence of evil and the problems of man s suffering are inextricably bound up with the quest for life ' s meaning. Job, the Holocaust man, must view his suffering as an essential component in the purposive development of life. Therein lies a therapeutic value: When a man finds that it is his destiny to suffer, he will have to accept his suffering as his task: his single and unique task. He will have to acknow- ledge the fact that even in suffering he is unique and alone in the universe. No one can relieve or suffer in his place. His unique opportunity lies in the way in which he bears his burden. ' Suffering is one of the keys to meaning, and according to Logotherapy . a form of psychotherapy having its intel- lectual origins in the extreme suffering of the Holocaust, the striving to find a meaning in one ' s life is the primary motivational force in man. 10 For Elihu, as for the Holo- caust-conscious logolherapist. Job ' s dilemma and the problem of theodicy are educative: they are designed to help one extricate a meaning from a seemingly absurd existence. In the end, though, even the solution of Elihu will not suffice, for Elihu ' s philosophy is a philosophy of life — a life fraught with pain, but a life nonetheless. It teaches that suffering adds to life ' s meaning. In theologi- cal terms it may be said to mean that punishment is a guide to repentance. Neither in psychological nor theo- logical terms, however, is this enough for the Holocaust man. The Holocaust man cannot survive on the philoso- Dnv of life alone. This is to say, suffering may give life meaning but if there is no life to which we can apply the lessons of suffering then the lessons are useless; and this is what our Holocaust man is confronted with: suf- 130 fering that ends not in a sense of moaning, but in trie senselessness of death. For Jon the Holocaust man Mv days are swifter than the weaver ' s shuttle: thev end in tne absence of nope (7:6) As a cloud fades and disappears, so he who goes down to Sheol rises no more. (7:9) Eliphaz ' s rationale will not suffice because its validity in the face of death, rests upon the assumption of an eschatology. But for Job there is no eschatology. He is corporeally bound, and thus he demands an ontology — an ontology that, paradoxically, gives death, as an end, meaning. Ill The demand remains unanswered. The solutions posited by the friends provide neither anodyne nor answer. Job is utterly alone in his suffering. It is his darkest hour. It is then, when the Holocaust man, Job, bereft of all joy, can only see the transcendence of God, that God s answer comes. When all Job can see is tragedy, when he loses sight of God s glory in creation, loses sight of the fact that creation, the whole cosmogony, was an act of love, then God appears out of the whirlwind to remind him otherwise. This is what Job has pleaded for, has demanded, but when the confrontation is finally realized it is on vastly different terms than those he imagined. It is not, as Job had ashed, a dialogue, it is a divine soliloquy — a theophany. This theophany must contain Job ' s answer, the answer that will direct his life and give meaning to his suffering and death: it must be more than a guide, it must be a world-view by which he can endure. God ' s answer comes, not as an arcane, pleromatic eschatology, but, on the surface at least, as a poetically overwhelming yet simple descriptive paean to the mani- festation of God in the natural order. It is the ode to immanence. To a Job who is only able to see transcend- ence the voice out of the whirlwind savs: 11 Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days began Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? Or hast thou walked in the recesses of the deep? Hath the rain a father? Or who hath begotten the drops of dew Canst thou bind the chains of the Pleiades Or loose the bonds of Orion? (38: 12. 17, 28, 31) God answers Job with questions: questions that are the poetry of creation, questions that testify, not only to his power, but, more importantly for Job, to God ' s presence. To a Job who asks ' Let me know my transgression and my sin ' ( 13:23) God answers, that you have darkened counsel by words without knowledge (38:2) you have suffered and in your suffering you have forgotten my love: In his wrath He has torn me apart, for He hates me. (16:9) It is in reaction to this that God gives Job his world- view. He tells him that for man there can be no absolute answer, only questions — the quest for meaning — and perhaps, ultimately the subtle intimations of a meaning. And in this quest Job must remember to look with the mind, and even more so with the heart of the poet. Even in the infinitely abysmal gulf of despair, he must search for the meaning, search for the love. He must remember that in God ' s ultimate act of love, his unfathomable creation : the same segment of eternity should contain the outcry of the tortured prisoner and the song of the forest. Both belonged to the same ancient and secret design and bore witness either for, either against but their testimony was clear: perfect harmony between me and this design, between me and this witness. Our Holocaust man must remember that in the divine harmony the true reality, the true meaning, is that of the poet. He must remember a stream then a cascade, an irrepressible majestic torrent, the poem that through the smoke of fires and above the funeral pyres of history the Jew had traced in letters of blood on the earth ' s hard crust — that old love poem unfurled in the gas chamber, enveloped it, vanquished its somber abvsmal snick- ering: SHEMA YISRAEL ADONOI ELOHENU ADONOI EH ' OTH. The room that housed the family of twelve was warmed by an open fireplace, and a big pot of soup boiled furiously over the constant flames. The girls wore long wool stock- ings, wool skirts, sweaters, and shawls, while the boys dressed in coarse pants, homemade shirts and sweaters, and heavy leather boots. A large warm black bread placed in a cloth on the wooden table was eyed with eagerness: the aroma of the freshly peeled garlic made mouths water. This was the home of a Russian Jewish family in the early 1900s. a home warmed more spiritu- ally than physically, but a home nevertheless. The family of Rabbi Joseph Feldman had a great decision to make. For that reason all twelve members were gathered in- doors, away from the many back-breaking chores that were their daily lot. Rabbi Joseph and his sons finished their prayer of thanksgiving and ceremoniously washed their hands. All looked with reverence and solemnity for the good Rabbi to spealc. Be seated and partake of your meal. The decision we ' will make will require great strength and prayers. Harry Feldman. the Rabbi ' s youngest son, could hardly control his desire to speak, but knew from past experience he would have to wait, be patient and hope. The thick soup and black bread rubbed with garlic was eaten with zest, for it was the main meal of the day and would have to sustain them till tomorrow. After the older girls. Busha and Mollie. had cleared the table and the men of the family prayed, a clean tablecloth was spread and a small wooden box carefully placed in the center. Everyone sat, waiting for Rabbi Joseph to speak. Busha s dowry has been fulfilled. The wedding will take place on the evening of the third Sabbath of next month. This will be a joyous occasion, and other problems should not pre-occupy our thoughts. Busha and her husband-to-be, God willing, will fix up the small room over the barn and that will be their home until the spring. Then we will build them a house Tike our own near the grape arbor. Tf Busha ' s husband-to-be has other plans he will have to bring them to my attention before the wedding date. Busha ' s face flushed, and she bent her head so that her blond-braided hair shadowed her sweet wistful face. Zelig and she had so many plans, and her father had heard rumors of them, but these he ignored because Zelig had not the courage to confront the good Rabbi. Suddenly, Harry burst forth. Father, let me speak. Please! T don ' t want to be rude but I must speak now. Rabbi Joseph removed his glasses, rubbed his eyes, and squinted at the young rebel. Very carefully, the Rabbi replaced his glasses. Now we will come to a decision about our rebel, my fiery-tongued son. whose patience is that of a bee ' s on a beautiful spring day. Every eye turned to Rose Feldman, who had sud- denly sighed so sorrowfully that even the rebel felt a lump grow in his throat. Harry was nineteen years old and eager for adventure. For him the decision was so vital that beads of perspiration rolled down his forehead and he nervously coughed. Rabbi Feldman picked up the wooden box and slowly raised the lid. Busha ' s dowry was taken care of. There would surely be some other expenses, but the rebel must not be disappointed. The father removed the con- tents of the box, closed the lid. put the box back in the center. He looked at the rebel. The hint of tears in his deep-set eyes made the children tremble. Mollie adjusted her shawl, while little Miriam and Sadie, the twins, held hands so tightly they ached. For once the rebel was silent at the right time and Max. the eldest son, asked his father if he would like a small cup of wine. Rabbi Joseph smiled, My son, the decision will be made without wine, for it is not a sweet thing we must do. Max sat down next to Saul, who was so tall for his twenty years that the people of the village called him the young giant. Yaakov and Peretz, the village blacksmith and shoemaker, kept their eyes transfixed on their father s. All their love for this man was etched on their faces. Here was a man who walked with truth and kindness. His decision was so difficult a one that each wished the minutes away to bring it to an end. Rabbi Joseph looked from one face to another, gath- ering the sweetness from each one and storing it in his heart. He reached for the pile of colored paper on the table and counted. There were thirty-four rubles left, hardly sufficient to meet the problem. It wasn ' t enough! but it would do: it would have to do. The decision is made, my son. You may have the money with our blessings and love, but remember God and the family you leave; remember the teachings of truth and kindness you have learned in this house. Fill your new home with the love you have lived with here. It is difficult for me to say yes, for as sweet as the grape on the vine is when its sugars crystallize on its skin, so sweet is each of my children to me. Rabbi Joseph turned slowly and with soft voice said, Busha and Zelig are dreamers, too. Tell Zelig I am ready to wish you both a good journey to the new world. ' So it came to pass, that the young rebel, and later his sister and her husband, brought an old, beautiful culture to an adventurous new world. 133 Awards And Honors Yeshiva College Valedictorian David Epstein Professor Meyer Atlas Memorial Prize for excellence in Biology Michael Goldsmith Bitzaron Prize for excellence in Hebrew B.
